My husband and I stayed from 11 - 20 Dec 2019 for my 50th Birthday treat. We stayed in Apartment 4, which was perfect for us, although we didn’t need the second bedroom, I loved the private balcony area with an elevated view of the pool and gardens. There are two very small flights of steps up to the apartment, which was no hassle for us. The apartment itself is simply furnished in a local style, which we loved and had everything we needed. The cleaners come most mornings and were very polite and respectful. The bathroom had a lovely walk in shower, which I loved. We chose Shades due to its location to the Payne’s Bay beach and due the closeness of restaurants we knew we wanted to visit. The pool and gardens are immaculate and a pleasure to view. The entrance is via a security pad locked gate and there is a safe in the apartment. Jacqui was the star of the holiday for us, as she just arranged anything we needed. My Husband had already booked The Cliff restaurant for my birthday from the UK, however he asked Jacqui to check the reservation for us and make sure we had a good table, which she did and it was fabulous. Jacqui also booked other restaurants for us throughout our stay, Tides, Lone Star, Tapestry and at each they knew it was my birthday week and arranged a little surprise. This really made my holiday. Jacqui also arranged a car and driver to take us to our chosen restaurant which was a brilliant person called Pete. He is the most loveliest man you could meet. He drove us to Oistins Friday fish fry and stayed there until we were ready to come home. You can walk out very easily to local places to eat and drink which we did other nights. Shades is located in a residential area and we felt extremely safe day and night walking about. Anyone you meet will say hello to you. The beach and restaurants are 5 - 15 mins walk away depending on where you go. You can hire sun loungers on the beach easily enough and there is beach bar, which we only used for drinks. The bus stop is just at the end of the street which we used s few times to go into Bridgetown and to visit other beaches on the West Coast, although Jacqui can arrange a car hire if you need one. In a nutshell, if you like to travel independently and are looking for a small boutique style of accommodation, then Shades is a must. We will be back ❤️

From the time we arrived we felt completely at home. Jacqui is a superb host, nothing is too much trouble and she is so friendly and welcoming.

The apartment we stayed in was perfect, it was very comfortable, had everything you need and was beautifully clean-Sabina who came in each day was terrific.

On site there is a small, very well equipped gym, a lovely swimming pool and great gardens to relax in, with sun loungers and a large gazebo with tables and chairs. There is also a guests bbq.

The Appartments are in a brilliant location, 2 mins walk down the road to the beach, which is gorgeous and the sea is great for swimming, it’s not rough and we saw turtles every day.

Restaurants are in easy walking distance and busses run into Holetown-roughly, 5 mins journey, frequently.

We will certainly be going back.

Shades is an amazing place to stay. The apartment was well equipped with all you need, the landscaped gardens were a delight to sit in and enjoy the pool complex. The location is a 5 mins walk from the lovely Paynes Beach where all the catamrans drop anchor to snorkel with the turtles and watch the sunset. Our lovely hostess Jacqui was always on hand to help with any queries or bookings that we wanted to do. Would highly recommend staying at Shades.

Shades is as good as it appears on the web and then some. It’s a friendly, safe family environment. The seven apartments are set out mostly around the swimming pool in attractive, secure grounds.

Our first-floor apartment was light, airy and well equipped, and included a fairly private terrace overlooking the pool and garden. This terrace had plenty of space for sitting round the table for drinks or meals. Our apartment was very clean and was serviced daily Monday to Saturday. Pool towels were provided. WiFi connection was straightforward and the signal was good.

As well as the pool, Shades has small but usable gym with weights, exercise bicycle, treadmill and cross trainer. If you want something more extensive, several commercial gyms nearby offer temporary membership. There is also a laundry room that we found to be a big plus.

Shades is well located less than five minutes’ walk from Paynes Bay Beach. In addition to the beach and its facilities there are several nearby local restaurants and at least one minimart. Holetown is around ten minutes away by frequent bus from the bottom of the road. If you’re renting a car, Shades has straightforward on-site parking.

No review of Shades would be complete without mentioning Jacqui’s thoughtful and efficient management of the apartments and her helpfulness in making any further arrangements that you may need, such as car rental and restaurant reservations. Shades is a great place to stay: Jacqui makes it truly outstanding.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 11 night stay at Shades and our first time in Barbados.

The apartment was perfect for us, it was very clean and spacious and the kitchen had everything you could need to prepare meals etc. The patio outside was very private and a relaxing place to eat. The gardens and grounds were beautifully kept where all manner of birds visited including humming birds. We also had a few monkeys wandering along the fence. The pool and relaxation areas were great too.

Paynes Bay is just a few minutes walk to the end of the road. It really is a beautiful beach with plenty of sun-beds to hire, it never felt busy and the sea is gorgeous. Very easy access to Holetown and Bridgetown on the local buses caught just at the end of the road.

Rochelle and her family made us feel very welcome and they were the perfect hosts. She was always on call if needed and gave us lots of advice about where to go/restaurants etc. She also arranged taxis to/from the airport and gave us the use of her taxi driver, Jamar, who was also great, always on time and very reasonable.

Hopefully one day we will go back and stay at Shades again.

It is always a delight to stay at Shades when we are in Barbados. It is our go to place in Saint James. Jacqui is an unbelievably good host and she makes you feel like part of the family as soon as you arrive. She effortlessly helped us through the Covid testing process, organised groceries whilst quarantining and is a constant supplier of smiles and advice. Shades itself is perfectly placed for all the delights of St James such as Paynes Bay, Roti Den, Holetown and all the other delights of the west coast. The pool area on site is perfect for a lazy day grillin' in the sun. The onsite gym is a bonus with a couple of machines and weights if you are that way inclined.
I would fully recommend a stay at Shades if you are looking to stay on the Platinum Coast.

Jus stayed 9 nights in March 2024 with my family (4 adults) at Shades Holiday apartments 2bedrm 2 bathrm in Paynes Bay St James Barbados, this was our first trip, the apartment is family owned, met Rochelle and 4 generations of her lovely family. I booked directly after excellent communication with Rochelle, the apartment is known as the penthouse, it was upstairs with a large patio with seating and outdoor dining then door to large living room with sofas TV kitchen diner 1 ensuite dbl bedrm, separate bathrm, 2nd bedrm single beds, both bedrms had air con and fans, there was mosquito screens on all windows, very useful & nice breeze when windows were open, property is gated, with other apartments in the ground, set on a quiet road off main Rd very convenient for buses to Bridgetown (South) and Holetown / Speightstown (North) and Paynes beach across the road few minutes walk, can rent beach chairs at beach, beautiful maintained garden & trees for shade, small pool with chairs/sunbeds, outdoor shower and small gym room that my son used everyday, room with washers and dryers for use by all apartments and space to dry clothes outside, the apartment had comfortable beds, housekeeping 3 times a week, towels changed, beach towels, iron & ironing board, couple of spare adapters and extension lead, kitchen had enough pots and pans dishes cutlery etc for 4 ppl good oven and cooker, kettle, fridge freezer microwave toaster. Nothing was a problem for Rochelle, could msg her whenever, she helped to arrange taxi to and from the airport and gave advice re supermarkets Massey one one side and Jordans on other both can be reached by bus or taxi, we did not rent a car. Also ordered some home cooked Bajan food arranged by Rochelle. We really enjoyed our stay, family is friendly and I would recommend if self catering is preferred to hotels. Photos on Trip advisor are exactly how it looks.

Shades is one of the best kept secrets of the west coast of Barbados. This small and intimate complex is just a few minutes walk from the beach and a 2-minute bus ride to all amenities in Holetown.
The units are well appointed and the staff is very attentive to all your needs; the plush garden surrounding the pool area provides intimacy in a relaxing environment.
The excellent manager, Jacqui, can arrange airport pick-up/drop-off, secure chairs and umbrellas at the beach and organize reservations for all island excursions, restaurants and taxis...all in the most friendly and efficient manner.
The ambiance between guests is most convivial, with most being repeat visitors.

My daughter and I stayed at Sades for 7 nights. We were quarantining and I can't think of a better place to be quarantined. We had a 2 bedroom apartment with a patio area, where we were able to sit out and enjoy the garden views and glorious sunshine. The Shades apartments are surrounded by exceptionally well-maintained gardens which really add a feel of the Caribbean, especially when you cannot venture far afield. From the patio we were able to see the sun setting.

When we finished quarantining and were able to venture out, we were pleasantly surprised. Shades is ideally located. It is a short drive away from the popular Holetown, or for the more adventurous you can enjoy the walk. Shades is literally a few mins walk from the beach. The apartments offer a gym, swimming pool and laundry facilities. There is a gazebo where you can sit if the sun is too much. For those of you wanting beautiful and peaceful surroundings, away from the hustle and bustle, then Shades is the place to be.

The hosts are friendly and professional and do all they can to make your stay enjoyable. I am really looking forward to going back when I can fully enjoy all that Shades have to offer.

Top Holidays in Barbados. We spent 9 nights in this beautiful property. It was very comfortable for us, we slept well in the Air conditioned room and could make our meals in the equipped kitchen.
The garden ans swimming pool are very nice. It is 5 min walk from one of the most beautiful beaches in Barbados. The Platinum coast where you find also the Shakira residence.
The bus stop is in front of the main road down the property and Rachel will be happy to organize you a rental car delivered at property or give you suggestions for restaurants.
