Thanedar is at about 80 kms from Shimla on the old Hindustan - Tibet road. Set at an altitude of about 7700 ft / 2350 M, from here unfolds a magnificent panorama of mountains. The farthest of them are cloaked in snow, others are deodar clad or draped in a soft blue haze. In a gorge, some 6,000 feet below and clearly visible to the naked eye, flows the River Sutlej. Thanedar & its surrounds enjoy a special place in Himachal history. In 1916 Samuel Stokes, a social worker from Philadelphia brought the first apple saplings to this place he had adopted as his home. One can still see the 'Starking Delicious' apple orchard that he planted there. Nestled amongst the acres of apple & cherry orchards that drape the mountain slopes in this region, is the Banjara Orchard Retreat - an eco-friendly getaway that will enchant nature lovers. There are fully furnished rooms, family suites and independent log cabins with attached baths and a well-equipped kitchen to cater to a variety of tastes.

Price : Very high compared to facilities(Food and stay). Extra charges for kids but no transparency on terms and conditions. Be careful as you might need to spend out of budget expenses. Location : Excellent, however, Shoja is a much better place compared to Thanadar Missing : 1. wifi or internet service 2. in room tea/coffee arrangement 3. in room phone to order food, connect to reception or to another room 4. proper direction in between roads to reach that place, be careful and try to talk to local people 5. poor in room heating system 6. only dinner is non-veg(insufficient amount) rest are veg meals 7. No television Staff : helpful with luggage and in between requirements

I am sorry that your experience at Thanedhar was not great. Banjaracamps & Retreats is not a typical hotel chain. We intentionally do not provide TV or intercom phone in any of the properties. There is a whole hospitality theory behind this. We do provide room blowers/ heaters, hot water bottles & blanket during winters. We provide home made style food which is freshly cooked. We are happy that you liked your stay at our Shoja property.

As we were nearing this place almost exhausted after a 4hrs car drive from Chail,it was almost dark with hardly any habitations on our way around. Was wandering about the existence of such a cosy resort as heard from our friends, when google voice announced our arrival at destination and we noticed one stout built person waiving at us standing all alone in dark. Later identified as Mr Attar Sharma, this man immediately summoned few boys who surfaced from beneath placed sprawling resort compound to carry our luggage, while he accompanied us to a lovely cosy sitting room amidst open resort compound under starlit sky with 180° wide open valley in front...lights from far off hilly habitations started blinking by this time, one by one. Lovely greeneries around, sincere 5 star hospitality with a humane face, immaculate mannerism,too-eager-to-attend-to-guest-calls attitude of all staffs, excellent dining hall ambience, delicious cuisine served in choicest cutlery:all went to win our heart and made our stay at this orchard retreat truely a memorable one. Yes,a recommendable retreat, worth spending a break. Should never finish without special mention about this person Attar Sharma:a well-articulated personality with a vigilent and quick response aptitude,a great managerial quality indeed. It reminds me losing my cellphone, only to be discovered after reaching Tirthan Valley Riverfront Farmstay from Banjara. After getting informed,Mr Sharma was quick enough to intervene, repeatedly communicated with concerned driver from Thanedhar and us and singlehandedly ensured my phone back to it's custodian. Such is his involvement in his workplace!!

This was my second time stay at Banjara Orchard Retreat in less than a year. Both the times the stay has been beyond expectations. It was a great pleasure to hear Mr Thakur narrate the story of how the tiny village of Thanedar turned Himachal Pradesh into India's 'Apple State' by Samuel Evans Stokes of Philadelphia, who arrived in India in 1904 on a spiritual quest. I even got an opportunity to visit his apple orchards during the apple harvesting season. Now coming back to the property, it's a beautiful 12-13 rooms property on a hilltop overlooking the valley. The views are to die for. And, the only thing as grand as the views is the service. The food is home-cooked and delicious. I really enjoyed the apple chutney made in-house from home-grown apples. I stayed in a suite made up of wood and brick. The interiors are very soothing and warm. We always had long rounds of conversation either around the bonfire or the gazeebo. The dining area is a fantastic place to have conversations too. This modest property is responsible for developing tourism in the area and the best part is the genuineness of the staff. You never feel you are away from home. If you are looking for a place to spend some quality peaceful time amidst nature, I highly recommend it. Reaching Thanedar isn't difficult too. You can take a night bus from Delhi ISBT and then it takes approx three hours by road to reach Thanedar.

We stayed in the same property 7 yrs back. The ambience, facilities, services everything is exceptionally fantastic. Not much has changed in these 7 years, only some construction that has happened outside property (village expansion). The roads leading to property are in good condition. As it is apple orchards land, so small treks are there within the orchards. Locals are pleasing, though not very happy when passing through their orchards. So we have to respect their privacy. Lovely place for relaxed holidays. It is kids and elderly friendly property (some steps to climb) Sharmaji, the property manager is always smiling and very helpful.
