The staff were very helpful and polite. They helped with maps and suggestions of places/areas to visit.
The twin room we had (Room 1004 on the 10th floor) had a view and the biggest shower/bath room that I have ever seen in Japan. The room had a bright neon pink sign "Never ending journey" in the room on the wall for some reason (it can be turned off but just well...so Japan). The room was clean, modern and though relatively small was nice and comfortable. The hotel in general looked quite new.
The hotel is close to the Shinjuku neon night life which has to be seen to be believed (walk back towards the station). So many bright neon signs and young people around enjoying themselves. The area of Shinjuku takes on a different life at night. You can walk to the Golden Gai area (full of small bars) which is apparently an attraction. We saw the area during the day when mostly everything was closed (there are lots of CCTV cameras and warnings about not fighting).
The hotel was quite spacious for its location. Beds and linens were clean, toilets were immaculate. Something I've noticed that this hotel lacked though, was a VOD card vending machine that seem so ubiquitous throughout our stay in Japan. No dining halls too, but the hotel would be delighted to send your breakfast (if you included that addon) to your room if you give them a phonecall.
The staff were great, just like almost every single Japanese person we interacted with during our stay there. Their command of English was quite good, and they will readily answer any questions you will have, from inquiries about the best food in Kabukicho, to the fastest way to get to Mt Fuji.
Great stay for its value!
The structure seemed very new and the room, although not very large, had all the comforts.
Fantastic for the quality (therefore cleanliness, location and services) price ratio.
5 minutes from some fairly important metro stops
We did read plenty of other reviews and warnings saying that the hotel was in a red light district. TAKE MY ADVICE AND IGNORE THE FACT - it was so harmless! If no one told us it was in a red light area we wouldn’t have know. There was nothing we saw during our 8 nights there that made it obvious. The only thing was many of the hotels in the area offered rates for either “resting” or “staying” - quite funny actually! We felt very safe at all times of the day and night walking to and from the hotel. The area was very clean and well lit.
The hotel itself still looks very new. The rooms are pretty small (when you have two adults and two large suitcases), but after a few days we found a place for everything. The toilet / sink area is a good size, and the mini-onsen of a shower / bath is huge, complete with stool and bowl, just like a proper onsen. The bathroom was complete with all amenities, including razor, comb, shower sponge, body soap, shampoo, etc.
The toilet was also one of the fanciest ones we saw in Japan - it had a bigger screen than many mobile phones, and more buttons than they probably require to launch a space shuttle!
The bed was a bit hard for my liking, but then I like a very soft bed, which we didn’t find anywhere in Japan. Our room had it’s own air conditioner that we were able to control.
We only tried the breakfast on day 1...... average, but then for the price we weren’t really expecting any more.
The Reception staff spoke enough English to get by, and they were very friendly and helpful.
We stayed for another two nights in Tokyo later in our trip at a different hotel, and felt Villa Fontaine felt more authentic and Japanese, compared to the other hotel being Westerner central.
Pros :
- Cheap Room Rates
- Ultra Clean Rooms with awesome daily cleaning services and fresh Towels, Robs, sheets, everything when required.
- Free Cable Internet Access
- Beds and pillows were ultra comfortable
- Funky Modern Furniture with nice LCD TV in the room
- Friendly Staff
- Across the road to 24 hr mini super market awesome large collection of cheap priced quality food and alcohole.
- Excellent Air Conditioning (Makes a huge difference)
- Good view of the Shinjuku area in certain rooms (We got lucky, i imagine.)
- Location : It's near shinjuku station but not close enough if i had to do it again.
Cons:
- Rooms are tiny, 16 Square Meters. for the deluxe room that i was in there was barely room on the floor to put my suit case down and open, there were other slightly better designed rooms in terms of floor space but that would have come at the cost of the view which would be hardly worth it for a few extra center meters of space. At first this kind put us off but we got used to it.
- Views - Only certain rooms i.e. one corner of the building in this hotel would have views of the city and at only ten floors high that doesn't leave many. We were luck and got the top level room on the best corner with views of the city and the outer fringe of the red light district of Shinjuku, not that the window was that big or that the curtain could be pull back far enough to enjoy it. Nor that the window could be opened all the way not that you would want to for very long because the smell out side wasn't very nice.
- Location - This hotel is in the outer fringe of the red light district of Japan in Shinjuku. This means that when traveling from Shinjuku station to the hotel you are walking past Drunks, Homeless people, prostitutes, brothels, bars, clubs, pachinko clubs (Poker Machine Parlors ) More so it's extreamly close to a large hospital and a batting center which is incredible noisey on most nights especially weekends. This didnt really bother us much though we are from Sydney City area so we have seen it all and heard it all and are used to the Noise, people from quite suburban places would probably not cope well.
- Laundry services - Are a rip off through the hotel if you try to go to the laundry mat directly they will charge Westerners the same price as the hotel - $5-7 bucks to wash a pair of socks 12 bucks to wash a tee shirt what a joke. That pissed me off so much.
- International phone call rates - Are a rip off again ... i made 7 or 8 calls one slightly long call and they charged me $200 AUD ... another joke which i had to grin and bear .
- IF you going to Toyko for the first time and you want to do a lot of Sight seeing then your better off staying in central Toyko especially if your with your girlfriend. As most of the locations around japan in Tokyo are easier and quicker to get to from central tokyo station.
However if your there with the boys or unlike my girlfriend you have a girl who still likes to go out and party every second night then this place is for you. It's close to Shinjuku, Shibya, and Roppongi where all the decent bars and clubs. More so girls would love the shopping in these areas and Harajuku there is seriously 10,000 girls fashion outlets that is not a joke im probably being conserative with that number. Or if this is your second time to Toyko and your again looking to party, socialise and just go shopping than a hotel in these areas that are really close to the station would be your best bet. If was to go back i would look at the Prince Hotel Shinjuku or the Hilton in Shinjuku/Shibya area but obviously price would be somthing to consider when deciding this.
Aside from all this, I loved the two weeks i was there, it's incredibly safe, i don't speak a word of Japanesse but with a decent translation book we never got lost, there are maps with english translations everywhere on the train. The city is amazing you could spend years there and not experience everything that Toyko has to offer. It really is the culture shock if your looking for one when traveling around the world.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone, it took a few days but i really warmed up to it and was very comfortable and at the price it was practicall unbeatable especially since it was only built in 2007/8 so it's really new.
The hotel is just a little bit hard to find, it's not as hard as other people say if you prepare well in advance, but it's not like it's on a main street or close to subway like some of the other hotels in Shinjuku.
During my trip I stayed in HVF Shinjuku & Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku, to give a better idea, here's the comparsion of both hotel
Location:
HVF: takes about 8-10 mins walk from the main railway, you'll have to pass through a few different small area to get to the hotel
Sunroute: it's right above the Keio line which is useful for me since I was taking the train back to the airport and I didn't have to walk far with my heavy luaggage, it's also only 1 and a half block away from the Shinjuku JR Station.
Room:
HVF: room is small with quite large bed, bed was comfortable, but since the large bed, there's not much room to do anything in the room. I have to give great compliments to the bathroom though, it's almost as big as the rest of the room. The toilet & the bathing area has a door to separate, so it's good if you're taking a long bath & someone has to use the bathroom. The bathing area has a bathtub and what was really great is there's a big shower area next to the bathtub, they gave this little chair to sit on while you're taking your shower, i think that's a nice experience of how Japanese lives and I didn't even want to go out of bathroom!
Sunroute: The room is small and the bed is small too, so there gives just a bit more room to move around. The room design is simple kinda like a business hotel, although the bathroom is old with the white walls turning yellow. It's not bad, but I'd prefer the room for HVF.
Others
HVF: It's a small boutique hotel, so don't expect it'll wow you, but it gives more than what a "real" hotel can offer you, they even offer free sandwiches for breakfast which taste awesome! If you don't mind the walk, it'll be a preferred choice as I believe the price is cheaper.
Sunroute: It's very convenient and great value for the hotel. Considering the price, it's newer and more comfortable than other hotels at the same price range.
Coming month, I'm going to Tokyo again, I choose to stay in HVF than Sunroute because it's a bit cheaper, and although the room is pretty much the same size, since the bed is bigger it gives me a more comfortable sleep.
