Nestling snugly behind the Fiesta Americana is The Explorean Cozumel. Delightful thatched cottages with balconies overlooking the tree line; the figs are filled with hummingbirds and iguanas, the latter sunbathing lazily.

Fresh coffee and orange juice are delivered to one's door each morning. You awake refreshed from a good night's sleep and sit enjoying the forest whilst sipping a morning cup of joe.

And then breakfast, which is delicious Mexican food. There are beers or cocktails aplenty as you rest on a lounger beside the emerald green jungle pool. Perhaps you want a swim? I swam countless lengths in the cooling water, feeling one with nature as I passed beneath the shading canopy of tropical hardwoods.

Lunch is always a treat here, dinner an experience. The staff are, to a person, incredibly warm and friendly. At night-time, the lights slung above a path through the forest is delightful.

The neighbouring Fiesta Americana doesn't have a beach club at present. There is, however, access to a rocky shore, beneath whose surface are waters teeming with fish and other marine life. The shoreline snorkelling there is great.

So is the pool, with a friendly bar where one can sit in the warm water whilst enjoying a pina colada or ice-cold cerveza. The entertainment there is fun, the Explorean's excursions fantastic. Needless to say, El Cielo was the highlight of the week on Cozumel.

One last thing, a big shout out to our American fellow guests, whose warmth and friendliness made us feel as though we had known them all our lives. The Explorean was a week of sunshine and luxury. After which, onto the Riu Yucatan for the first time in a quarter of a century...

This was our 4th consecutive stay at The Explorean. We were pleased to see fresh paint everywhere, new walkways, handrails, mini fridges in the rooms and chairs and a small table on the balconies. The service here is amazing. From check in Tami to the guys who had the unpleasant task of unclogging the sewer in front of our room everyone greeted us with a smile and Buenos Dias! We were very pleased to see Eduardo the bell man, Roberto, Juan, Fermin, Alphonso and Arturo again. And returning from two years ago Hugo! We celebrated Pam's birthday there this year and they went beyond any expectations we might have had to make it special for her, I cannot thank them enough. We were treated like family and had an experience we will not forget.
Housekeeping was prompt and the room was returned to like new condition every day. AND the mattresses were new this year!
It was great to see Lucio and Victor again they are now at Fiesta Americana.
This is the all-inclusive that breaks the mold. We didn’t have one bad or even mediocre meal with 8 different choices of places to eat (not all open at the same time) it’s hard to beat this place. Yara and Samuel at the Cervicheria were wonderful as was Salvador (sp?) at the Del Mar buffet.
Pam was a little under the weather most of the week,, we only did one excursion this year Gerardo and Luis were fun and engaging guides.
The excursion to Chankanaab said it included snorkeling but, be aware you will have to rent gear when you get there, we would have brought our own had we known that. Otherwise it was a pleasant addition to the activities this year as some reefs were closed.
There were a lot of children there this year. There is NOTHING for kids to do at Explorean except play in the pool all day. They were well behaved but standing in the pool holding a gin and tonic that soon turned into a gin and tonic and pool water as children came splashing by was a little annoying, as we come here for the otherwise tranquil atmosphere.
The jacuzzi was warm to hot this year! Now if they fix the jets so it doesn’t make a loud splashing noise when they are turned on it will be perfect!
The only other complaint I have is the pressure to attend a membership/ timeshare presentation was a little too strong this year. I understand it is part of the business, but our week went by so fast to waste even 30 minutes of it would be awful.
Roberto and Juan and Alfonso and Fermin once again you made it a joy to be there!
Muchas Gracias!!

My husband & I were looking for a quiet, laid back resort to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary & were delighted to find The Explorean! Upon arriving, we were greeted warmly with cool hand cloths & a fruity, refreshing , cold drink. Our room was nice & clean with a very comfy bed. The sweet cleaning ladies did an excellent job all week refreshing the room. We both have Fibromyalgia pain & found the mattress & pillows made for a very restful sleep. The small fridge stocked with cold drinks was an added bonus. An in room safe was also provided. The out door porch with a jungle view was very nice to relax on & we were never bothered by bugs. Really loved dining at our restaurant as well as Fiesta Americana restaurants without requiring reservations. Our favorite was fish at the La Cevicheria. Especially the fish tacos! We often ate breakfast & other meals at the buffet, Vina del Mar as well as ice cream & coffee at the Coffee Corner. What really sold us on booking the Explorean was the daily excursions that were included. They did not disappoint because the guides Ruben, Vega, Joshua, Luis, & Gerardo (afraid I may have forgotten someone?) were fun, knowledgeable & professional while being very considerate of our needs. We were provided with delicious food, drinks, towels ect. All equipment was in very good condition & the boats for snorkeling trips were large & comfortable ( saw a beautiful Eagle Ray ). Ruben even sent pictures of us by e-mail. We loved this since my husband & I don't have many pics of us together! Snorkeling on our own outside the Fiesta was very fun also. We saw a variety of gorgeous fish & a young Eagle Ray. Thank You so much to the staff at The Explorean (especially Abagail) for making us feel at home!

We returned to the Explorean in April 2021 after our 1st stay in 2016. They have upgraded their pool area with 3-4 canopy beds and the sister hotel has done the same out by the beachfront, which we enjoyed. The activities have been changed somewhat to match up with what is currently available in the area with the pandemic restrictions affecting everyone. But we were happy to have a day to drive Jeeps around the island, stopping at a beach club for a few hours. Snorkeling at El Cielo was amazing as always. The activities being included in the all-inclusive fee truly makes this resort a wonderful value!

We appreciated the staff's detail in keeping everything clean; all staff wore mask/gaiters constantly. Also a real bonus was the hotel scheduling and providing a Covid-19 test to be performed onsite the day before we flew back to the US. We had our test results within a few hours.

The only thing I would caution someone on considering this resort is the musty smell in the rooms. The humidity seems to stay captured in the room even with the A/C running and all our clothes absorbed that smell throughout our stay and upon returning home. The resort is peaceful and beautiful but I just wish something could be done with the odor in the rooms.

We really enjoyed our 2nd trip to this resort and look forward to returning one day!

Overall, we greatly enjoyed our stay here! My husband and I traveled to the Explorean for our honeymoon based on the recommendation of a family member, and we were not disappointed. We loved the peaceful jungle atmosphere of the Explorean, and the access to the beach scene of the Fiesta Americana was perfect.

Other pros:
Super friendly service! I speak some mediocre Spanish, and the staff were often willing to converse with me in Spanish, although nearly everyone had perfect English. We were so happy with the service of Abigail, Darwin, and Gerardo at reception, as well as Roberto at the bar, Luis, Edgar, Hector, Edwin and Johan at the restaurant, and Edgar and Rueben as excursion guides.

The atmosphere of the Explorean is so relaxing and serene, perfect for a honeymoon. Some may not like that there aren’t TVs in the hotel room, but we enjoyed the opportunity to unplug a bit. The poolside is wonderful for relaxing as well.

The access to the Fiesta Americana was ideal— if you want more of a party atmosphere, you have access to that. The restaurants are great there too. Make sure to catch a few of the shows that are each night at 8pm!

Covid precautions were incredibly well done— better than most places in the US. All staff wore masks and many wore face shields or goggles. Rooms were sanitized each day in addition to regular housekeeping. We always felt extremely safe in terms of COVID.

Cons:
I wouldn’t say the food is anything incredible, and sometimes I didn’t feel there were enough options on the menu. Not bad, just not the best food I’ve ever had.

The rooms are fairly basic. I wish there were upgraded rooms available with more amenities like a bathtub, because we definitely would have paid more for a deluxe type room for our honeymoon. Also, the water pressure/heat in the shower isn’t great.

As far as the excursions, we only did the coastal bike ride to the Mayan Cacao Company and the Jeel tour. Unless you’re super into tequila, I’d skip the Jeep tour. It’s a four and a half hour chunk out of your day, and they take you to a beach club at the other side of the island, which feels nonsensical because you can be at a nicer beach at the Fiesta without paying for overpriced food or being asked to buy things. There is tequila tasting at the end, but it’s 30 minutes out of a very long excursion. The bike ride was fun.

All in all, we were very happy with our week spent here, and would only have changed a few things to improve it.

Fantastic place. The rooms are in a very jungle like environment and the pool as well. Expect to see many wild life. The sea is wonderful, excellent snorkelling by a relaxing beach bed.
The restaurants are ok, there is a wide variety. Our fav was the explorean restaurant that also is great for breakfast.
The people working daily to please the guests are absolutely amazing. They deserve some tips!
I would leave a suggestion for management that is to stop giving plastic bottles to guests as much as possible by replacing with glass bottles in the room.

All staff wore masks/shields at all times. (sad to say a lot of US residents disregarded masks or wore them wrong). Hand sanitizer given every time you entered the restaurants and they had bottles placed at each bar. Food was average for an all inclusive style place. Not the best nor worst we've had.

All staff from reception to security, room attendants, waitstaff, and bartenders were very friendly and accommodating.

Explorian had activities included and all were fun and just the right amount of time. The recreation activities staff were very friendly and knowledgeable.

The resort is limiting occupancy which I liked a lot. Pools/bars/restaurants weren't packed with people as you tend to see non-COVID. I actually liked this better and it made me feel more at ease.

If you are looking for that exclusive feeling I highly recommend this resort and take advantage of the activities

When we arrived, apart from the hand gels, everything was ok but within a few days everything changed due to the Coronavirus. The last 2 days, the whole place was completely empty and explorean restaurant was closed.
However we still had a great time.
We stayed in 229 which is an upstairs room in the Lobster / Langoustine building. It was pretty quiet and we enjoyed the rustic charm. Room service was excellent apart from lack of soap when we ran out and had to ask for it a couple of times before we got it. The minibar was nice to have. The pool was nice although it filled with leaves everyday and the staff constantly were clearing it all day. The little heated jet pool was nice next to the main pool. Due to the number of people there, there were no problem getting a sun lounger or the cabana since the place was empty but you were surrounded by ta lot of iguanas which lounged around the pool as well and were fascinating to watch.
We had our breakfast mostly at the Explorean restaurant which was much quieter till it closed for the last 2 days when we had to go to Vina Del Mar restaurant in Fiesta by the beach. The lunch was taken mostly at the beach restaurant for the delightful tacos. The menus did not change much during our whole stay but there was enough to keep us going. The Peninsula and the Explorean restaurant were the best. The Italian restaurant Rosato was a disappointment.
We did not take part in any of the activities since we made a personal decision not to due to the corona virus. it was a shame since that was one of the main reasons I booked this place.
We only had one person who constantly trying to get us to join their club but for us it was not worth it and we had to say no constantly multiple times which was a little bit off putting. But otherwise all the staff were excellent and really friendly and helpful.Special mention to Manuel, Jose and Aaron. The beach and pool side service dependent on who you had serving the bar.
We took a taxi to and from the Playa Del Carmen ferry and it was 130 pesos to the hotel and 120 back.
Overall despite the coronavirus, we enjoyed ourselves and maybe one day we can go back and enjoy the excursions.

My parents and I arrived to the hotel right after a hurricane...hotel staff and service helped to completely forget about that fact during our stay; they were friendly, gentle and dedicated.

The visited occurred during COVID times too and everything was being carefully cleaned and organized, especially the meals. This protocol was easily added to an already very well structured service.

We enjoyed both the Explorean’s pool and restaurant quite a lot: food was delicious and both spaces were normally holding 2 or 3 full tables at most. We managed to stay and come back safe and sound, happily rested and “pampered”.

My parents favorite part of the day was being able to sit back and relax with a Mayan Coffee carefully prepared by Claudia! I’d particularly like to congratulate her on the lovely attention and disposition, although all the staff was nice and helpful, and the activities’ staff was also highly attentive and fun.

the rooms have mold/mildew in the air duct. the resort sanitizes room before housekeeping service but does not clean the ac duct work. the duct work must be sprayed & cleaned regularly. also, the Air Conditioning filter in my room was disgusting & badly needed to be cleaned. it is imperative to remediate mold/mildew which is toxic & serious health risk. everything i brought with me smelled like mold/mildew when i got home so i had to sterilize my clothes & bag, etc in boiling water. please clean out your air conditioning duct work in each room & replace or sterilize the air conditioning filters.
