Very clean rooms, nice sheets and pillows. No water provided to brush teeth. Beautiful pool and great restaurant staff. The check in billing process was a confusing nightmare. We paid for non refundable rooms 3 months prior, but actually hadn't paid? It was only a deposit? Then we absolutely had to provide another credit card, than the one already on file for yet another deposit or something? Communication was getting lost in translation, but this was the most confusing 45 minute check in process that I have ever witnessed, let alone been a part of, and I used to work in the hotel industry!

Response from Hotel PUERTO LIBRE, Director General at Hotel Puerto Libre
Responded 25 Mar 2023
Hello Raine-Marie! Thank you for your comments. If it is a direct reservation, a confirmation email is sent with the account statement and the deposit is broken down. If it is through OTAS, it is established that a hold is made as a security deposit 7 days prior to arrival, for the value of one night, by credit card. In any case, we will see how to transmit the information in a better way for our clients. Greetings

My husband and I just returned from Cozumel after having stayed at the Hotel Puerto Libre for 3 weeks. We had Room 307 and I think we had the best room with respect to the room's location within the premises. View of the pool, the ocean and a partial view of the street, which was great as Carnivale was going on while we were there. We had a view of the parade right from our balcony! The room is set back from the road so traffic noises, etc were minimal (except during the parade, of course!). What made our stay particularly nice was the staff. Everyone we encountered were genuinely friendly and eager to assist in any way to make our stay pleasurable. Bernardo was excellent. We had some issues with the connectivity of the WiFi in our room and he sorted it out. The continental breakfast was included and we took advantage of that several times. You can order additional food items if you want more than fruit and toast, which we did and the food was well-prepared (Thank you Marco and Alex!). The pool is not heated nor is it large but it's perfect for a quick dip to cool down. The premises are very clean and well maintained; there seems to be a constant effort by the staff to keep things in order & tidy. The beds in the room were very comfortable with a lovely selection of pillows. Lots of storage and a huge closet to hang clothing. A small fridge and a Nespresso machine were really appreciated by us during the stay. This establishment is affiliated to a local restaurant by the name of Azul Madera. If you go there and pay cash, you will get a 10% discount. It is a lovely restaurant and I highly recommend it; it is only about a 10-15 minute stroll from the hotel. There are many, many restaurants and bars in the vicinity of this hotel and all are a walkable distance. Big savings on taxis! I do have two suggestions that would improve a person's stay at Puerto Libre: 1) The bathroom light switch located by the sink also turns on the fan & light in the toilet/shower room. It would be nice if there were individual switches for the light over the sink and ones for the light & fan in the shower area. If you get up during the night to use the facilities, you will disturb the person who is still sleeping! 2) The music by the pool - I don't mean the live music, as it was wonderful. But the recorded music got to be annoying - songs would get changed mid-way through, the volume was loud then it would get turned down, etc. I am not sure if the staff are doing this or if it was the fault of the program being used. It would be so much better if there was some pre-recorded tunes played without disruption. We try to travel to Cozumel every year and this was our first time at Puerto Libre. This was one of our best vacations ever and it was certainly due to our stay at this hotel. Thank you Bernardo and everyone at Puerto Libre for making our vacation so memorable for all the right reasons.

We booked two rooms for one night and was pleasantly surprised how much value for money we got. Beautiful rooms very clean and modern with smart tvs including Netflix etc. the views and location was beautiful. Food and drink very generous sizes. Staff are very accommodating and helpful the hotel deserves a 4 star rating at least! Fridges are stocked with waters and has a mini freezer compartment, coffee machine also provided as well as a hairdryer in room. Air con worked really well. If definitely recommend this hotel and would stay again

- Very comfortable rooms at good prices (very good value for money) - Good views of the sea - Pleasant bar and pool area - Helpful staff - My only criticism is if the questionable pricing of bottles of water (150 pesos / £6 per bottle is very steep). The breakfast however is very generous and good value.

Great location BUT....far too many rules for Cozumel. We have been going to Cozumel for 40 + years. We were very excited by this hotel mainly due to it's fabulous location. Now that we know you cannot smoke on your balcony (in the room is understandable but on the balcony? Seriously?) Another rule is you cannot bring your own beverages to the pool area, also unacceptable. Sadly a place we thought had become our new home is a never to return for u s.

Hello Julie! We're glad you liked the hotel and we're sorry you didn't like the rules, but like every hotel in any country, they exist for a reason. We do not allow smoking because customers would throw their cigarette butts down the storm drain and it would cause us problems, as well as when throwing the ashes off the balcony they would fall into the rooms below. As for drinks, we have a bar service for customers to consume.

I had a four night stay in an ocean view room on the third floor. The hotel is spotless clean, modern, and is ideally located on a quieter part of town but very close to everything you may need. The room was also very clean and a good size with two double beds, and the main balcony is quite large with a nice sofa. My only minor issue was the room safe which only opened about 50% of the time. The ever helpful staff can unlock it for you, but allow plenty of time for that. Other than that, I had a perfect stay and will certainly be back again.

Lovely hotel overall, great location & friendly staff. We had an issue with two rooms, and on both occasions they couldn’t move us on the day as the hotel was full, but moved us the next day. We had two disturbed sleeps (difficult afternoon naps after diving) and moved twice, hence the average score, so don’t let the score put you off, as it might work for you if you’re not as noise sensitive. Room 109 is directly above the bar, and the balcony looks into the bar. Meant we didn’t use the balcony. If you like being in the bar etc then it’s fine. Then we had room 305 which has the extractor fan from a local restaurant directly above and that goes from late morning until 11pm (the restaurant, by the way, is excellent). Too noisy for us, but may not bother others especially if you’re out until late. Finally we moved to room 301 which didn’t have a king size bed but two doubles - but was lovely & quiet, so suited us. Overall would recommend, just check the room suits you!

I hate to leave a bad review of any business but especially in Cozumel as we love it here and our first stay at Puerto Libre was great. Unfortunately this stay is not going well. Our safe doesn’t work. Maintenance is currently trying to fix it to no avail. There is not outlet in our bathroom making blow drying, curling, flat ironing my hair etc impossible. My husband cannot use his electric razor. There are outlets in our room but no mirror. So we cannot see to do any of those things. We asked for an extension cord and they brought one but it’s too short. We need two, or a longer cord, and we were told they cannot help us. We asked for a mirror and they also were unable to accommodate. We asked for another room but they are at capacity. We can make this work for another day or two but we’re having professional photos taken in a few days and need access to an outlet by a mirror for that day at a minimum. We have essentially been told there’s nothing they can do. For the price we paid, there’s no excuse not to have a power outlet in the bathroom or for the hotel not to provide a long enough extension cord or mirror. We are super disappointed.

Hi Melanie! Sorry for all the problems you had. The room you booked (only one available at that time) is an accesible room, so the layout of the room is different from the others. The rest of the rooms have plug and vanity mirror in the bathrooms. We really went looking for a mirror for the desk, but they don't sell it in Cozumel. We had to order it online and it didn't arrive while you were staying. Hopefully this is not a detractor for you to visit us again and get a room as you wish.

I stayed here in Aug 2022 and am so happy about my lodging choice. It's a new hotel so everything is in great condition. The soundproofing on the windows is excellent. With the balcony door closed I couldn't hear any traffic at all. Housekeeping came daily which was a nice surprise! The AC is powerful but quiet. The only suggestions I have to the hotel are to consider providing hair conditioner and having coffee available at 7:30 instead of 8. That would make it possible to grab coffee before heading out diving. I will definitely stay at Puerto Libre the next time I'm in Cozumel.
