3 hours + drive from Taipei. Kinda expect more from Hoshinoya. The room is extra spacious with 2nd floor for the bathroom and private onsen pool. The place is relaxing, yet private which I like. The happy hour for ice cream is nice. Got some 30 min to 1 hour activities to do during the day but it's nothing much. Nothing else to do in the hotel. No gym, no sport activities, no nothing. Just onsen so better come here when the weather is quite cold (really not recommended during summer). Food options are low. If you want to dine in the room you only have one option - shabu set, which makes your room full of smoke and food smell when they actually have a la carte food menu at their only restaurant. Some of the staffs cannot communicate in English that well and they're very punctual about the housekeeping time. Like 1 minute late from the housekeeping appointment (which you have to tell them in advance) then they'll ring you. Definitely not worth the money. average service and facilities overall.

The garden is one of the best I had ever visited, which is full of delicated designs and surprising beauties. Visitors will enjoy walking, swimming, even staying whole day there with the beautiful long-life trees, colorful flowers and lively water. The room is spacious and stylish enough for not only healthy hot spring but also relaxed reading. Above all, the dining is unforgettably delicious and gracefully sophisticated. We can not help canceling the visits out of the resort, thus to enjoy as more as possible for all of the facilities and activities within resort.

Stayed 2 nights at Hoshinoya Guguan. It is truly one of the best Onsen resorts in Taiwan. The design and architecture is stunning, nothing was spared how the resort was created.
The location is good, tucked in the hill away from the more bustling area of Guguan.
The room is immaculately designed, with the strong influence of Japanese elements as the brand is from Japan. My room spreads over 2 floors, lower floor is the bedroom, toilet and a huge daybed overlooking the beautiful landscape of the resort. The upper level is the double vanity, a shower and your very own private onsen. It is heavenly.
Minibar comprises of 2 soft drinks, 2 beers are complimentary , so as 2 pieces of hydration mask, face toner, face wash etc. There is also a Nespresso coffee machine and a tea making facilities for you to enjoy during your stay.
The public onsen is equally impressive, separating the Male and Female onsen. Both onsens are closed during 12pm till 4pm for cleaning and sanitizing. There is a sauna, indoor Onsen and outdoor onsen. Truly luxurious.
The resort offers some activities which are free of charge, but some are chargeable.
The breakfast was amazing, they gave you 3 options (Western, Taiwanese or Japanese). Very tasty and nicely presented.
The 9 course Japanese dinner was even more elaborated. Though it was quite pricey but it was worth the bucks. Their service is impeccable, one of the finest in Taiwan.

This is arguably the very best one could hope for in an onsen hotel, or in any hotel. Hoshinoya Guguan is not just a gem, it is a ruby with diamond studs.
Located about 90 minutes from Taichung Airport, this hotel is in the hotspring district of Guguan. At the very end of a narrow winding road, the other hotels en route pale into insignificance. The security at the gate checks for booking confirmation and allows only registered clients to set foot in the compound.
Minimalistic Japanese design features are instilled into every aspect of the hotel. From the hotel entrance to the washrooms, from the carparking facility to the gardens, from the outdoor swimming pool to the onsen, one could not help but notice the details that sit quietly behind everything here.
The guest room is also beyond words, not just the size but the scenery, the cleanliness and everything inside has been thoroughly considered and supplied, nothing more nothing less.
It would be unfair not to mention the restaurant - its decor and food and of course, the staff - exquisite and memorable!

Brand new hotel. Premises very clean. Modern and zen design. Service of the staff is great. Private onsen in each room. The pool is heated and will be able to swim all year round. Food was also superb. Our whole family will give it a full mark.

To indulge yourself, this is a best resort to reboost your energy with authentic Japanese food and good quality onsen.
Best come for more than 2 nights so could really slow your own pace to relief all the nervous temper.
Staffs are warming and helpful, they put a lot of effort to make sure you know the best of Hoshinoya.

We had a very thorough check in service, where they explain everything about the place, your room and onsen etc.
I would have given 5 stars, however, the food options were just a too limited for us, and there was no restaurant availability for our first night which was really disappointing so we had to make do with the in room dining options.
Also, it would have been nice to know they were able to do breakfast a la carte (which was really nice of them to do this for us in the end, but we didn't know up front) - sometimes you don't want such a lot of food in the morning.
Also the surrounding area is quite built up, so although the hotel is beautiful, you can see a lot of other buildings (from our room at least).

I stayed here for three nights during Golden Week.
Location
It takes quite a long drive from the Taichung High Speed Rail Station. There was no traffic on either the outbound or return trip, and I think I was going pretty fast, but it still took 1.5 hours. If I had made a schedule that allowed for some leeway for plane and high speed rail transfers, it would have taken nearly 10 hours one way from Tokyo.
Room
It exceeded my expectations. It was the perfect room for a relaxing holiday in the hot springs. The spacious bath with natural hot spring water and the daybed next to the bathtub (the room was called "Tsukimi") were great. The daybed on the living floor was also great for lounging around and reading a book.
Public bath
It's a shame that the sauna temperature was low. Not suitable for Japanese-style sauna activities.
Staff
Everyone was very kind and considerate, which was nice.
Food
Delicious, but there were few options, so I got a little tired of it after three nights. Some ingredients were thoroughly shared between each dish. Of the six meals we had, three dinners (Japanese course) and three breakfasts (Japanese style, Western style, and Taisho style), I think I saw scallops and abalone five times each. I understand that such efficient menus are inevitable when considering cost reduction and minimizing waste, but I thought that if the price had been raised and the quality of the food had been improved, it would have been a better stay.
Activities
I wanted to participate in something that required a fee, but I gave up because it seemed difficult if I couldn't understand Chinese.
The hiking trail called the Ekirai Trail, located very close to the inn, was just the right length and difficulty. I walked slowly and it took about an hour, including the round trip to the inn. The trail was very well maintained and easy to walk on. On the way back from the trail to the inn, there was a suspension bridge, a park, and a hot spring town.

Hoshinoya Guguan is "heaven on earth". The rooms are exceptionally designed; 2 levels with the private onsen at the lower level. Our room had a mountain view, and the entire environment is so relaxing with the views of the mountain and the peace and quiet of the property.
The food and meals are exquisite; their Executive Chef Hitoshi Kagawa is truly talented. Every meal - even the breakfasts, are both delicious and visually beautiful! All the staff are amazingly friendly and helpful, and spoke English well.
We participated in the guided tour of Guguan, which was highly informative, as well as the garden tour, which was equally impressive with the thoughtful design of the streams and flora.
Would highly recommend Hoshinoya Guguan - this was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Taiwan!

Hoshinoya is a very charming boutique resort; nested in the mountainous GuGuan valley, and about 1 to 1.5hrs drive from TaiChung HSR.
This resort is up on a little hill; has lots of beautiful landscapes, and sits behind the Shaolai trial (about 900m to first elevated level; entrance is conveniently located next to resort).
We are a family of 4. Room comes with 2 luxurious king size beds, a huge family living hall, 1 resting balcony, 2 toilets, 1 shower room (which extends to an onsen and overlooking the MaLun mountain.
Functional design of our room was above our expectations. Enjoyed our stay with their yugata, jap footwear, and phone pouch!
Garden setting is beautiful for strolls. Impressive menu for AM and PM, and food is fresh.
Love the resort in-house activities. Ranging from walk to town, night yoga, morning green tea, afternoon cocktails, etc.
Staff here is a big plus to the resort branding, and they can multitask very well! Very friendly, attentive to our needs, and detailed in work.
YunQi showed us on day of arrival with lots of warm gestures, Yue & Liu brought us for morning street tour with care and explanations, Cindy was passionate in teaching the night yoga.
Thanks all for making our stay so wonderful. Truly a 5 star rated resort!
