We stayed at San Carlos Plaza Hotel October 17-20, 2003. We were told by many people that this was the nicest place to stay at in San Carlos. BEACH/POOL -We knew there was going to be damage to the beach after the storm they had weeks before we arrived. A lot of the sand is gone and the beach is rocky, but they were working on putting the sand back in front of the hotel while we were there. There is still enough sand to hang out on the beach and have fun. (A lot of homes along the beach have storm damage) There is a nice stretch of beach to take a long walk on with lots of shells to collect. The water is absolutely beautiful a clear, green blue color and warm. The weather was sunny and warm and a little humid for this time of year we have been to San Carlos in October before and the weather was dry I think the humidity was left over from the storm. When we are at a beach location, we generally hang out at the beach, but with the work being done on the beach we mostly hung out at the pool. The pool area was ok the chairs were hard white plastic chairs with no pads, the pool was a nice temp but a little need some repairs. There were plenty of towels at the front desk. There was a bar by the pool that you could go and order drinks and food from. We tried to rent wave runners one day and they said they didnt bring them to the beach that day, so we never had a chance to ride. We didnt snorkel this trip, but we have in the past (by the old Club Med) and the snorkeling was excellent. There were a lot of divers staying at the hotel, so I guess the diving must be good. PEOPLE Everyone from the taxi drivers to the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. We know some Spanish but we didnt need to use it, everyone spoke English to us. HOTEL We stayed in a Master Suite which had two balconies with unbelievable views. We were disappointed with the room it was dirty and the carpet felt very strange on our feet, we think because it was dirty. The bed is very hard and the furniture was worn and in need of repair. When you turn on the lights at night you can see some roaches run and hide yuck! We dont think they have change the air conditioning filters since the place was built. The hotel itself looks like it needs some looking after a lot of lights didnt work so the hallways were dark, the water feature was not working and looked very dirty in the lobby, etc. Oh be careful on the steps in the elevator area and by the pool they are not lit and we watch a few people fall. FOOD We didnt find anything we liked but we are picky. OK, one thing the homemade soft tortillas and salsa were good. We ate one meal out of the hotel and it was excellent it was at a locals home they prepared homemade tamales and beans-Yum! OVERALL we will probably not go back to that location in Mexico mostly because there is not a nice clean place to stay and get a good meal. The water and beach is beautiful, but we would still go somewhere else. Good luck, I hope your experience at the hotel is better then ours. PS We had two other friends staying in the same type of rooms and they felt the same way about the hotel as we did.

We were lucky enough to get two great versions of Mexico within a months time. We recently went to Cancun three weeks befor visiting San Carlos. They could not be more different. Cancun is not Mexico. Cancun is a great place to be pampered and still feel like your in the US.

San Carlos is a hidden Eden. Not many tourists. Beautiful beaches, beautiful mountains.

The San Carlos plaza is an old Howard Johnsons, but the food and people who work there make this place. We stayed four nights and five days. There seemed to be about 12 other tourists in the hotel during our stay. This means some of the things you normally take for granted, i.e., hot water, can take awhile. The rooms are older, but clean. Beds are definately for bad backs; very hard. Pool is not heated and since we were there during a cold spell (high 70's) it was as cold as the Sea of Cortez. The Spa worked when you asked to have the water temperature turned up. They have a great kids pool that pools a large bucket onto a roof and splashes the kids. Our room was on the fourth floor, sea side, beautiful views. Went horseback riding near the hotel and that is a must do. We ate breakfast and lunch at the Plaza and the food was excellent. We ate dinners mostly in San Carlos at a few restaurants, all excellent, fresh seafood and very tasty.

Limited choices for hotels in this area, we had a number of people from other hotels that came to the Plaza for the day for the pool, food and spa. The Govenor came to the hotel for a lunch and the placed filled up for about 4 hours, then he left and the place was ours again.

There is no gym, although they have a room with broken machines and free weights, it is better to take a run on the beach.

Does this place need an upgrade? Yes, but with limited tourists, why bother?

We are not a high maintenance, so this place was great for our family. Beach was deserted, but just beautiful.

I can see how some people would give this place negative reviews, but I think you have to consider this place off the beaten path.

We were part of a tour group of 2 buses over the New Year weekend along with several other bus groups. The hotel was full, but the staff was not...no baggage service...no shuttle service to town. Food service was sometimes non-existent. Service, in general, was not good. Rooms had lovely views of the water but were outdated and shabby. Some rooms were very cold with no heat available. Other rooms were too warm with no A/C and there were no screens on the windows. New Years Eve party was poorly done.....food was cold. No bar service, wine selection very poor. Cannot recommend this hotel. Tried the restaurant in the Hotel Fiesta in San Carlos. Food and service there were excellent!!

This hotel is falling apart. We were there the first week of July 2023. The door to our room would not open. I asked the person cleaning rooms if the room was occupied, she said no. She said to push very hard and it will open. I had to kick the door to open it. I complained at reception and by the time I went up to my room, maintenance was there fixing it. I had to call down again two days later because the door was back to its non opening ways. This hotel does not follow its own rules. They put you a bracelet to prove you have a room there. When you look around the pool area, there are lots of people with no bracelets. The worst part about that is that these people are in the pool drinking with glass bottles, eating chips and snacks while in the pool. These people also didn’t have on bathing suits, they were just t-shirts and cutoffs! Us paying customers had to follow the rules. when we complained, they said that they allow outside people to pay to use the pool and that they should have on a different colored bracelet. I understood this, but only a small few had on a bracelet and the rest did not. I/we will NEVER go there again!

The beds suck, they rip you off for the deposit, like $200, the rooms are totally overpriced AND they never stop playing loud disgusting American music that no one wants to hear. If I could rate ZERO stars I would. Plus we got put into a ridiculous suite none of us wanted. I hate this place.

After being shut due to COVID and reopening in summer ‘22…this behemoth on the beach was/is in need of a complete renovation. Furniture, bedding, floors, fixtures doors all need replacing. But instead these geniuses added a indoor carousel and water slide.

The people who operate this hotel don’t deserve to be there. It is in a pristine location and all they do is pollute. Their boiler fumes are so terrible, you can smell them two kilometres away, forget about having your coffee or cocktail outside to enjoy the view. Picket ball courts are right under the chimney, I would much rather sit in my garage with doors closed and car running than going out to those courts. Absolutely disgusting. They should be closed down. If I could, I would give them-5 for rating.

This Complex is in horrible condition thru out. They reopened after a long shut down from Covid. There is no beach left. The condo we stayed in had blood on the furniture. Exposed electrical wiring in the bathroom. All of the pictures shown are from a very long time ago. In short this complex should not be operating in this condition.

Worst hotel I have EVER stayed in! Don't believe the pictures either. This hotel should be condemned! Everything here is OLD! Even the towels they supply in the room. The room was freezing cold. Might be ok in the summer, but not in January. Even tho the thermostat said heat and AC. Called the front desk only to be told it's broken. No surprise there! The pools were drained and empty. Thankful we only had to endure one night!

This place was a huge disappointment. From the minute you walk up the stairs at the entrance the flaws standout like a big fat sore thumb...chipped marble tiling, dirt in every crevace — we even saw blood drops on the stairs going up to the second floor that remained there for the entire course of our stay. The rooms: the view beautiful.
The bedding thread bare; the pillows ancient, the carpet filthy. No bug screens to the balcony so at the night the roaches roam in your room if you like leaving the door open to hear the ocean — otherwise no windows to the sea. The hallway noise and slamming doors made sleep difficult if not impossible. We also had some items stolen from our room— our fault perhaps for leaving them out. The hallways stunk like pesticides so badly that you can barely breathe and it made you wonder how healthy it could be to even be in the building. The volume of the piped in sound system was especially annoying — and I am young and typically like loud music...but not Mexican music at midnight full volume or at 6AM. It was ridiculous. The place has a stark, hollow feel. The pool was cold and the area around it very disappointing. The food was boring and bland. The Italian dining room was pathetic. Overall, the place stunk for the price and I would not recommend it without a major overhaul. They sell themselves as a classy hotel, well maybe for people who are inexperienced at travel but this is the sorriest excuse I have seen for a Mexican resort in long time. I love the quiet serenity of San Carlos over the Baja or Riveria resorts, and there's lots of outdoor opps but get a condo and skip the Plaza.

I think parking is free, the beach of the hotel is private but you can try there's no one watching as far as I remember.
