Unfortunately we had to cancel our trip to Palawan due to the pandemic. We paid for our 2 rooms back in December 2019. We do the right thing by these small operators by paying direct therefore ensuring they receive all the money and avoid booking fees from trivago, agoda etc. Now we can't get our money back. The many emails are proving fruitless. A good lesson learned is never pay by telegraphic transfer. Palawan and Port Barton are still high on our future holiday destinations. But I know where I won't be staying.

The purpose of any host review is surely to provide both an analytical breakdown of available amenities as well as perhaps a more personal view as to whether you actually liked the hotel/resort, this for whatever reason. In which case, let’s begin at the end and simply say that the Rubin resort is an OK place to lay your head, brilliantly located but meters from the beach with a most affable host called Eckhart, or Ecky to those who know him better. But, it was not for me... Let’s start with the good points. There’s a nice well maintained pool to relax in after a long day exploring which is certainly welcome. The grounds are well kept and there is a restaurant on site just in case the weather throws a wobbly i.e., it rains! Having returned from a day's snorkelling, Ecky and his good lady were full of sympathy when viewing my red-raw back (I really should know better at my age!). Furthermore, Louisa, one of the receptionists, was even kind enough to put copious amounts of Aloe Vera on the worst affected areas, this on places that escaped even my own arms reach. Ecky did actually offer but was visibly relieved when Louisa stepped in bless him! Lol! Price is also reasonable given it’s location and facilities so, what’s not to like I hear you ask? The not so good points. My bungalow, 1 – 1, though clean and tidy, was very basic. No safe; no coffee/tea making facilities; a double bed made from two singles; a single nylon sheet (when did you last sleep on nylon, in the sixties???); no top covering above the base sheet; a soft mattress barely 6 inches deep; no toiletries in the bathroom apart from a small bar of soap and two tiny sachets of shampoo; no breakfast included for the price and no fridge or TV. And before you yell at your screen as regards me mentioning a TV, I readily accept that coming to Port Barton to watch TV is akin to going to the South Pole seeking warmth but having said that, a fridge would have certainly been useful. As for brekkie, be mindful of what you order as all the items are listed separately. I ordered two eggs, bacon, toast, a tea and orange juice. I was told the total to pay was PHP 590. What, nearly £10 GBP for a basic brekkie? Hilton territory I thought... Furthermore, the eggs had to be returned because the whites hadn’t even been cooked and were still raw. Aside from the obvious risk of eating raw eggs, the breakfast offering I have to say was poor. Unfortunately, the young lady server was not overly happy when questioned over the price quoted but, a quick mental reconciliation of the bill saw it reduced by just over PHP 200. It seems that if you order toast, then you get the full listing within the menu that includes jam and multiple fruits. She had also made an error on the tea but really, the real question is perhaps why not just include brekkie within the room price as the resort is hardly cheap-cheap! The fact that they also ran out of change and subsequently promised to place it in my bungalow when the PHP 15 became available but never did, is probably nit-picking on my part however, it’s often the small things that count and are subsequently remembered. There was another, more serious issue for me and that was one of noise. The bungalows’ have obviously been produced to a spec that put sound insulation very low on it’s list of priorities. To say that the walls were paper thin was no exaggeration. You could literally hear everything in the adjoining room which provided for very little peace at times. I have to say that this one issue above all others would most likely deter me from ever returning. Rubin Resort has much to offer but for me, it was not a good fit. I don’t think this judgement was made any easier by the fact that my previous host and hostelry in Port Barton was very much to my 'fit & liking' but still, you can only tell it as you see it. As always, happy and safe travelling. Phil

This accommodation is wonderful. We spent three day 4 nights here. The owners were always on hand, they were very friendly and couldn't do more for us. They were always checking if we needed anything and were always making suggestions on where to go/ what to do. They had a passion for the Philippines and this showed. The villa was large, the air con was cold and the shower HOT! The pool was lovely after a long hot day. The beach was 1 minute away from the hotel. There is not one thing i would of changed about my stay. I loved our time here and highly recommend this hotel.

After staying on a remote island without internet for 3 nights, I booked this place because it promised a solid internet connection so I can finally get online. But when I arrived, I realized the wifi was not working and the staff didn't do much to fix it. There was no connection until the morning when the receptionist arrived more than 1 hour late and then she finally fixed the router. So I managed to get online for 5 minutes in the 18 hours I stayed there, then the trycicle driver already came to fetch me to the van terminal and I had to go. Also when I checked in, the girl didn't inform me that they lock the reception area at 10pm and nobody was there to refill my water bottle when I went there at 10:20pm not knowing that the staff are not available during the night. Otherwise it's very clean and peaceful, the beach is very near. German owned with modern design.

Very nice and cozy. No hot water when the weather is bad (heated with solar panels), slow WiFi, but that's also what we were looking for. Staff was nice, breakfast was good. There's a swimming pool too. Recommended.

This peaceful compound is metres from The beach with 8-10 cottages. The staff are very friendly and eager to help. The fans in the room don’t work very well, this coupled with a very basic mattress made it hard to sleep. The pool was also dirty and hurt your eyes if you got them wet. This being said it is probably one of the more luxurious places to stay in port Barton. Massages arranged through reception were good, however we also arranged a bus back to Puerto Princesa through reception 3 days in advance, we later found out it was only booked the morning we left, the bus was overcrowded (people on roof) and the driver demanded more money for a hotel drop off even though reception had insisted this was included in the price. Overall a good place to stay that could become a great place to stay with simple steps such as better fans and mattresses, a clean pool and more organisation at reception.

This was a small, quaint, basic hotel in Port Barton, a very short stroll to the beautiful beach. My room was very clean, no issues there. The pool was a nice touch. I really enjoyed my stay, would stay again.

We loved this hotel!!! Staff were brilliant, rooms were lovely! We had a pool view room, pool was so nice, thinks it’s the only place in port Barton to have a pool! 1 minute walk to the beach front! Food was great, the communal areas are really clean! I would recommend this place 100%. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and are absolutely in love with port Barton as a place :)

The food is fresh and very good! The best one we had in Palawan. Do not go there if you are in a rush, the food is fresh so it takes time (but very reasonable), and the result is delicious!! The staff is also very nice and the wifi works!!
