I have heard so many wonderful things about Amanpulo and how it's THE place to go when visiting the Philippines. It was always on my places to visit but I didn't think I would be able to go for this most recent trip to the Philippines. The entire experience is exactly that - an Experience. I tried not to do too much research prior to my trip since I wanted to take it all in and fully immerse myself. I had no expectations or have any idea what it would be like. All I know was that everyone had talked it up. Even with these already heightened expectations, I was still left speechless and in awe. They only fly out of Manila so I had to fly to Manila from Cebu and ended up staying a couple nights in Manila. I was picked up from my hotel and taken to a private airport hangar where I was able to check bags and enjoyed some light refreshments. When it was time to board, Island Aviation literally rolled out a red carpet and offered chilled towels upon boarding the private plane. The plane seats about 12 passengers and had the usual amenities in the seat pockets such as bottled water, a native woven fan and motion sickness bag. It also had ear plugs since the propeller plane does make a lot of noise. The flight only took about an hour and it felt surreal to land a plane right next to the beach. Once we disembarked, we were welcomed with a sampaguita lei and driven around in golf carts. We were offered a quick tour around the private island and dropped off to our beach casita. The casita is roomy with wonderful views of a hammock outside with the beach in the background. The bathroom is large and I was pleasantly surprised to see that my luggage was already situated in the closet. The bathroom has a shower and a standalone tub. Everything you could possibly need is already in the bathroom including a hairbrush, loofah, dental kits, insect repellent and even bath salts for the tub. The views, the beach and the overall island just left me awestruck. The sand is powdery and so soft and the clear water is all shades of blue and turquoise. Each guest gets their own club car with a map so it was also a treat to be able to drive around and explore the whole island. The lagoon side of the island has calmer waters and is perfect for the sunrise while the casita side of the island has waves and is perfect for sunsets. The staff is so accommodating to the point that if you're craving anything, they will find a way to procure it for you and fly it into the island. If there's something that you're craving and don't see it on the menu, they will do what they can to make it for you. The food is made with exceptional quality and the sushi tasted like something out of a Michelin omakase, which makes sense since I found out that they fly their fish from Tsukiji market. All the little attention to details is just astounding. Anything and everything that I could think of was quickly resolved or provided. I cannot even begin to fully articulate how this was such an incredible experience and definitely something that everyone needs to experience in their lifetime

So having read the recent reviews I was a bit confused - it is (very) expensive, and still managed to get some negative reviews. How was that possible? The verdict is that we had a brilliant stay - incredibly beautiful, relaxing, fabulous service, a private pool and a view to paradise via a beach from the bed. Aside from the beach being magical, the waters and diving magical (I did not go swimming once without seeing a large turtle) and the nature of the island captivating, our lodging was lovely - not contemporary but just what one wanted in such a setting. Bucolic, relaxing, in the middle of nature, with views over a wooden deck, a pool, a beach and then an island put there just for us to look at! The exclusive nature of the experience is of course enhanced by it being a private island with relatively few lodgings, and a private plane being the only way in and out. On the service I must say that it was among the best I have ever had (and I have seen quite some) - ranging from everyone smiling and being welcoming (without it seeming overly fake..), then some of the experiences were really a function of how nice and helpful the people were - ranging from the diving instructor/guide, to the cook and waiter for the private dinner on the beach (well worth it!) and just generally in the restaurants. The people made the experience. Even when in a spot of trouble, the resort doctor was fabulous and knowledgeable. So why are there some negative reviews; My sense is it makes a big difference what villa or casita you stay in. Ours (no 21) was recently renovated, in particular around the pool and the terrace. Others I saw bear the signs of being 30 years old with unattractive pebbledash concrete, some pools not as well maintained and not recent in conception and design. On that, it seems that each villa is privately owned and not all owners invest equally. I can see why some people would be disappointed with some of the properties on the island, and that is a matter for the management to discuss with the owners. The other reviews went mostly to the "small costs" - many travellers have breakfast/dinner included in the lodging and then are surprised to see that there are lots of extras and much of the menu is not included in the package. Also, for a hotel in that category and price class, it is a bit silly that the minibar is not complementary (or at least non-alcoholic drinks, local beers and snacks). You kind of expect that in such top of the market property, but to the credit of the new management (a new general manager arrived a month ago and seems very clued in) that is an issue that they recognise and seem about to address. My summary is best described by my wife's comment three weeks later - and two continents and 6 cities later - "why can't we go back there, before going home.."

Might be the most beautiful beach in the Philippines. The Island has that Powdered white sand and cyan color sea. It will look like a lightroom edited place. The Casita (beach side) was amazing. Food was great. We even had that famous turon. Service was exceptional. Shout out to Jay Cacal for handling all activities we did during our stay. A must visit for every one.

Celebrated our 2nd Wedding Anniversary here. Not sure if it is a coincidence or if they intentionally assigned us a Casita with the same number as our anniversary date, but it was so thoughtful. My husband almost lost his wedding ring while swimming near our beachfront but thanks to Ron from Recreation, we were able to retrieve it in just a few minutes of snorkeling. This is definitely an unexpected highlight of the trip. A big thanks to these people who made our stay amazing: Mart, Francis, Ize, Vince, Chef Ruel, Levy, Gerald, Ian, Rizza, Desiree, Maricris, Fevelyn, Rudy, Jonah, Mel, and Jeromel.

This Aman resort has strong points but also some weak ones. The best aspects are the very accommodating staff who really try to make your experience a delight and of course, the utterly gorgeous beach. Special cudos to Ian who made every breakfast at the Clubhouse a treat. He is so warm and pleasant, nothing ruffles his feathers and you look forward to his morning greeting. He is an asset. We took an interest in Filipino breakfast foods and he, Jeromel, and Franco kindly arranged for us to taste special Filipino dishes and sauces that are not routinely offered. Jeromel and Franco are also outstanding and quite pleasant; this breakfast crew is special. The resort has a guitarist who can be scheduled to play at your beach dinner and he plays some evenings at the Clubhouse. I can’t recall his name but he has a lovely voice and soothing phrasing and I definitely recommend his services. His minstreling adds such magic to the evening. I love replaying the videos I made of his performance. My sister utilized the spa quite frequently and thought highly of the masseuse, Irene, and the Lifestyle Coach, Tania. They went out of their way to individualize her experience and focus on her needs. The steam rooms and exercise suites were immaculate. The only issue with the spa/gym is that the bathroom access is restricted to between 9am and 9pm. Although the spa/gym is open 24 hours daily, if you have to go early or late, you must leave the facility. They should keep at least one bathroom open as long as the spa is. The beach that fronts the upper teens/20’s casitas is divine. The water’s color is spectacular and so transparent. The sand is agreeably soft, white, and fine. Most of the time, the water is perfectly calm and inviting. If choppy, head to the beach fronting the villas next to the aquatic center, that area seems to be in a perpetual state of calm. This is also where the offshore bar is located. Be prepared for a possible surprise if you walk there though! I spent one afternoon walking around the island and nearly all the beaches were deserted. As I passed by one of the large empty villas, I spied what has to be one of the largest monitor lizards anywhere. It must have been 8 feet or longer. Fortunately, when it saw me coming, it skulked away to the villa hidden in the background. They steer clear of people but are still quite a sight for the uninitiated. When I booked our two beach casitas, I was under the impression that all the beach casitas have their own pools. They do not. Only a handful of beach casitas have pools and they are called beach pool casitas. When I asked if we could have one villa instead of the two beach casitas, I was told it was not possible. Keep this in mind when booking. If you don’t absolutely need a pool, the beach will more than serve your needs. The water is so lovely and just a short walk from your casita. We stayed in 24 and 25 and liked the locations. The casita itself is a bit dated but very sufficient. The bed is comfy and the staff do a great job of keeping the sheets fresh and the toiletries well-stocked. One beef I do have is that Amanpulo provides one fresh fruit collection at the start of your stay and some dried fruits/coconut in two jars. Other Aman resorts have a plethora of delicious snacks: nuts, crackers, cookies, special concoctions. Not here. The Clubhouse Library offers some tasty afternoon snacks and drinks but that’s it. Some salty snacks should be offered in the room, especially given the resort’s hot and humid environment. Another issue is the dinner meals. I know Aman is not known for its exceptional dining experience, but these dinners need some upward refinement. We absolutely loved our breakfasts, but the dinners were lackluster. We ordered lamb one night and rather than it being rare, it was medium well-done. It also had little flavor. The fish was fresh but very simply prepared. They have some very special wines on hand, but who really wants to splurge big bucks on wine or champagne when the food is just not there? Also, one night when they offered a special meal at the Clubhouse, a crowd of ten or so joined us in the indoor dining room and our table of two was completely ignored. No one came to take our order for over 20 minutes. And once they did take the order we waited another 30 minutes before anything else happened. Once they brought our food, I asked twice about when our wine would arrive. After another wait, they told me they did not have the bottle I wanted. But I was able to have that same bottle the next night at the Beachclub! The dinner service at the Clubhouse is not as good as at the Beachclub. The Japanese restaurant was closed during our stay. Amanpulo has a new manager and I am sure it is challenging to get everything in order, but dinners at the Clubhouse need some work. Lastly, the biggest issue with Amanpulo is the aggressive sandflies. They are merciless. I fortunately received few bites and the ones I did get bothered me for 10-15 minutes. My wife and sister (blood type A’s) were bitten frequently and my wife suffered severe skin reactions all over her legs and arms. This happened despite using a host of various mosquito repellants including what Amanpulo had available. Even after three weeks, her wounds still itch. Perhaps some times of the year, the sandflies are less prevalent, but they were everywhere except on the beach. For this reason, it might not be worth occupying a villa with a pool near the villa. The sandfly issue makes returning to Amanpulo an unlikely event for us.

Dear mingfatsai, Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback about your stay in Amanpulo. We are thrilled to hear that our team members contributed to making breakfast a treat and the Aman Spa treatments bespoke to you. Our guitarists will especially be glad to know that their music is now a keepsake of your Amanpulo stay. Your kind words mean a lot to us, and we will make sure to pass on your appreciation to each of them. However, we sincerely apologize for the instances where we fell short of your expectations. Your feedback is valuable to us, and every point you have raised will certainly be reviewed and addressed. Your insights are greatly appreciated as we continuously strive to provide impeccable experiences for our guests. It saddens us to learn that the discomfort caused by sandflies has taken the magic out of your Amanpulo experience. Please know that this matter is taken seriously, and our resort regularly implements treatments under the guidance of experts to mitigate such issues. We regret that the repellent provided in your room was not sufficient in preventing the bites. Unfortunately we find that guests have varying reactions to the formula. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss the new measures we have implemented to address this concern, as well gather more details about your stay. Please find my email address below. I will be very grateful to hear from you. Thank you again on behalf of all of us in Amanpulo. We send you our very best wishes from our peaceful shores. Warm regards, Tim Bilfinger General Manager tbilfinger@aman.com

Celebrated my bro's pre-40th bday celebration in Amanpulo. It was breathtakingly great from the time we arrived at the Amanpulo lounge in Manila. My bro booked the 4-bedroom villa with amazing sunset views every night. We were given a quick tour of the island by our villa staff then we were taken to our villa where there were drinks and snacks for us to decompress from the hustle and bustle of Manila. It was definitely the most memorable time I've had while visiting the Philippines. The pool was great since there was always a shade from the trees nearby. Making pool time great without having to worry about applying sunscreen. So many activities and we could not do it all, but spending time on cabana raft with the family was my favorite, we were able to snorkel as well. It's pretty much two activities in one. The food at the clubhouse and public areas was fine, however our catered meals from our personal chef was very tasty and custom made for us. The staff that attended to us were very responsive to our requests and made our beds when we were away on excursion or out on the pool area. They are why our stay was flawless. I also enjoyed having a golf cart to explore the island on my own. The pavilion was a great place to have some family time. All in all, my Amanpulo experience made me wish I could return again and again and again.

I never thought I would write a chronicle like this about Amanpulo. I have been traveling to incredible places all my life staying in luxury chains like Six Senses, FS, MO, Belmond, Waldorf Astoria and of course Aman. This was our fifth Aman after staying at Sveti Stefan, Amanzoe, Amanruya (the best) and Amanjena. Our expectations were high. The process of my reservation with the hotel, a year before staying, already started being complicated and tedious. I never received a confirmation from them with the rate, conditions of my contracted half board, etc. Only a balance with the amount to pay them. I had to claim it myself. Fortunately I had a screen shoot of my reservation and I had to remind them repeatedly that my reservations were half board and the conditions…. In addition to this, they send me confirmation of my flights from Manila to Amanpulo (with a fuel surcharge without any justification) that fit perfectly with my flights. But a few days before arriving they tell me that with 75 minutes of connection I will not be able to get to their 1 o'clock flight and I will have to wait more than two hours in their lounge or if we want to eat something go to a hotel near the airport because they don't have food in their airport lounge . Only snacks and drinks. Fortunately I manage to coordinate with them a fast track service at the Manila airport (with extra charge) and I arrived at the lounge with almost 45 minutes of waiting before the departure of the one o'clock flight. They created absolutely unnecessary stress for us. We paid an unnecessary service at the airport because immigration was fast with hardly any people and our bags left very quickly. We had a lot of time left on the connection. Our next surprise is in the waiting lounge. An employee from Amanpulo approaches and asks us if we already know what we are going to have for dinner that night at the hotel so that they can organize it. It was 12:15 noon. I had already made my 4 reservations for the nights since our program was half board. We had the menus before arriving at the hotel. That night we had in room dining. We politely told him that when we got to the hotel we were going to have lunch and that at night we would decide what to have for dinner. We were very surprised...... The plane flight was very good. The rooms a teertop and a beach pool Casita correct. Somewhat outdated and simple, for a hotel of that category and price. The best of Amanpulo without a doubt its location. Pamalican is a unique, beautiful island with breathless beaches and water. The cleaning of the rooms insufficient. My daughters found a cockroach in her shower and killed it. No one from the hotel cleaned it after 24 hours. We had to do it ourselves. All luxury hotels always leave a welcome detail: fruit, champagne, wine, chocolates, etc… In Amanpulo two jars: one I think were pieces of dried mango and the other I couldn't identify… very very poor!! Food: Absolute disappointment. Poor and boring breakfast. If your program is a half board, they eliminate many options from the menu. What they call "prime". They try to sell you other very expensive and low-quality options for your dinners and thus bill you more. The purified water that they offer you we thought made 3 of 4 travelers sick. With vomiting and diarrhea 48 hours after arriving at the hotel. We have realized that we have not been the only ones to get sick in Amanpulo. Both on tripadvisor and on Google there are chronicles of people who got sick to their stomachs during their stay at Amanpulo. It is the first time that this has happened to us and we have been traveling all our lives. When you go to an ultra luxury hotel it is not acceptable at all. Something is wrong with them As we had already realized the low quality of the food, we decided to go for a basic to “survive”. And drink commercial brand bottled water. That's when we understood the hotel's insistence that guests “not bring their own food “……. I also do not understand that in a hotel of this category there is so little quality and variety in the food. We have been staying in hotels with remote locations and spectacular gastronomy. As in Six Senses Zigy Bay or Waldorf Astoria Maldives for example. The only restaurant that is saved is the Lagoon, at Zuma prices in New York, but with very small portions. Service: Hotel staff don't seem well trained for their job. You have to ask them for things 20 times. My daughters were given the bicycles three days after arriving after claiming them many times. Absolute lack of joy and enthusiasm on the part of the employees. They are only worried about being able to invoice you more. It's a weird atmosphere... We had a small incident with one of our buggies. Circulating backwards we did not see the branch of a tree that was twisted. And the ceiling was slightly lowered. They made us sign a document and charged €600 to our account. We understand that it was our fault and responsibility, but the price of the repair is quite excessive. Spa and gym. The gym is phenomenal and the person in charge of it is friendly and a good professional. I can't say the same for my massage. The person who did it to me caused bruises on various parts of my body. She doesn't know how to give it. A few days before I had received a great massage at the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok and much cheaper... The day before we left, 3 of 4 sick, we could not enjoy the tranquility and privacy of our Beach pool casita. In a villa near our Casita there was a wedding. We had music and furniture going through our garden towards the beach all afternoon... Until we told them to bring them directly from the villa where the celebration was taking place, but they told us they wouldn't let them. They bothered us. As we have seen in other chronicles, they took us out of our room at 12 noon. Being sick, some of us were allowed to stay in my daughters' room for a while and without prior notice they changed the time of our return flight. It was an almost please go away that you bothers us...... New clients are coming…Or so they made us feel. This had never happened to us on a trip. Conclusion: Pamalican is a unique place in the world, a true paradise. First class location, but Amanpulo is a third class hotel.

We just come back from an 8-night stay in a beach pool casita. So far there are 5 of them: 1, 7, 21, 22 and 29. We stayed in #1 which seems to have a bigger pool with a shallow part. The hard product starts to show its age, yet everything works perfectly and everything has been well thought after. The timeless island decor is ok as the important part is the view. You cannot get bored of these 50 shades of blue! Amanpulo was designed to offer the guests a great experience, not to satisfy the designer’s ego as we can see more and more often in recent resorts ;) Authenticity is the key word there. Food is way better than what we experienced back in 2015. The Japanese restaurant at Lagoon Club is fantastic. The Beach Club offers an obvious nice view. Its capacity has been increased. Our favorite was the Club House, which is quieter with a wider choice (south East Asian dishes). We also tried the beach BBQ right in front of our casita. It’s a must! Obviously prices are stellar, nothing comes cheap today… There is still some room for improvement: 1. the pizza oven moved from the Picnic Grove to the Lagoon Club. Why? 2. Service can be inconsistent at times. We celebrated Alex’s birthday during our stay. We expected a ‘happy birthday’ sign at the back of our golf cart like we saw on others but it didn’t happen. 3. The west villa club house is very nice with a great pool but nothing happens there. Why not taking advantage of this space to set up a games room (there is already a ping-pong), or use it one way or another? 4. Last but not least it could be nice to organise some special evenings, like it happens in other Amans. Overall we spent our best holidays in Amanpulo and we would come back in a heartbeat if it was closer to Europe. Thank you to the Team and congrats for making Amanpulo so special. Snorkeling directly from the beach and seeing turtles each time is magical.

Spent a total of 7 nights. The first 3 nights in a Beach Casita, at a rate of USD 2,145 per night (including 10% service charge), then 4 nights in a 1-bedroom Villa (although we ended up staying in half of a 2 bedroom), at a rate of USD 3,905 per night, plus USD 1,380 for Airfare, Fuel and Flight surcharges. The rate we booked was inclusive of breakfast and dinner and some other stuff, but I'll get back to that. At a total USD 23,435 for the week I expect nothing less than the best. Note: before we booked back in September of 2022, we were quoted a "Villa Escape" rate, which included the following: "Stay of 3 nights or more offer - Welcome drinks and canapes - Nonalcoholic items in the mini bar - Daily breakfast and a la carte dinner for two per villa room at the Club House, Beach Club or Private Dining (Nama at the Lagoon Club not included) - One-time Pamalican cruise - One-time private beach barbecue for 2 per villa room" Our confirmation mentioned "Island Escape", which I guessed was the same. However: We did not receive any welcome drinks or canapes. We were charged for all non alcoholic items in the mini bar. We were offered no cruise and no private beach bbq. Let me start with my biggest issue with this resort. Every time you eat or drink you usually receive a bill to sign. Here you don't. It's all "charged to the room" but you don't know what has been charged and what has not / is part of the package. So, when we went to check out, I found that we had a ton of charges that I did not recognize, amounting to about USD 500. When I asked to see the details, I noticed: * A couple of wrong charges for soft drinks at the restaurant for dinner, when it was supposed to be included - NOTE: for dinner you get 1 starter, 1 main, 1 dessert and ONE non-alcoholic drink. If you want a second soft drink you must pay USD 8 for it, and even local beer is not included. * One evening we decided to eat at the Club House (included in half board) but as we do not eat meat our main selections were limited – the main courses menu is heavy on meat. So, we asked if instead of the boiled fish (I don’t recall exactly the dish) we could have the fish cooked fried or steamed. The chef came out and said "of course", and we got a nice fillet of fish each, with some veggies, one steamed and one fried. For this were charged about USD 150, and, since we were not told and did not sign anything, we only noticed this at check out. It was never mentioned that this would be an extra charge. USD 150 for two local caught fish fillets is absurd imho. * For 3 of the 4 nights that we stayed in the Villa, we had the chef (private chef included in the rate) cook for us. But my soft drinks were charged. I asked why at check out, and was told that "one soft drink is included when dining at the restaurants, but not in the villa". That's absurd. Plus, it was supposed to be part of the Villa Escape package... * I asked if I could have some popcorn while watching a movie in the villa at around 9pm. The popcorn was made in the Villa's kitchen by the (included) butler. I had about 4 or 5 bowls over the 4 nights we were there. All of them were charged at about USD 15 per bowl, and mentioned as "AM SNACKS". When paying nearly USD 4k per night, I find that absurd too. Overall, this "reverse penny pinching" combined with the fact that you never sign for anything and thus are not aware that it's happening (which to me is unacceptable as a policy, not to be aware of the ongoing charges) killed my mojo at check out. This is not a way a luxury resort should operate. I've stayed at the Brando, Fregate, Bawah, FS Desroches and others, this for me was a first. This "surprise, it's not included!" at checkout... Now, on to more details: Location: 5/5. Beach and water wise this island rivals the Maldives, and the fact that you can access it by private plane within an hour from Manila is great. I walked around the island 3 times and there are parts (like most of the northeast part) that need serious cleaning from debris and garbage, but overall the beach on the west side is nearly pristine. The island is well kept, although it desperately needs road paving. Too much dust when the roads are dry and too much mud when they are wet, and there are parts where the road needs a 4x4. I don't understand why they don't invest in paving the roads with something. The waters around the island have lots of fish and some turtles and are great for swimming. Overall, I was very happy with the island itself. Cleanliness: 5/5 Housekeeping was excellent, especially in the Villa. Service: 5/5 All the staff has been through "smiling training", as they always smile when they see you! Seriously, the service was excellent. Especially Marlon, our butler (whom we did not bother much) and Terry our chef (excellent cooking) were amazing. My only complaint would be that when we had breakfast at the restaurants, service was slow, like 20 minutes from order to delivery, when there were very few people there. But not really an issue. Food (Dinner): 3/5. Inconsistent. We had some excellent food, all of it cooked by our chef Terry. And then we had some mediocre food, especially in the Lagoon Club where we had to pay for dinner. By the way, I think it's another absurdity that dinner at the Lagoon Club is not included in Half Board, when the prices there for most dishes are comparable to the prices at the other two restaurants. This is their "Japanese" restaurant, were we had dinner one night and we both ordered the salmon dish which ended up being pieces of salmon off cuts, full of fat, which was bad. I guess they serve this dish to get rid of the off cuts from the sushi, but the dish was not described as "salmon fat" or "salmon belly". The nearly USD 40 sourdough pizza served there is OK, lunch only. Otherwise, the rest of the food at the restaurants was just OK. Breakfast: 4/5. The food at the restaurants was very good. Breakfast in our Villa was requested to be simple, and was great. Room: 3/5 This is my second issue. The resort was built in 1993, and I bet that apart from a refresh or two, and maybe a refurbishment of the shower and toilet, there has been no renovation of the rooms since then. The style of the rooms was "grandma's beach house" to me, and the room tech is ancient. The Villa we stayed at was a two bedroom, and it's basically two Casitas and one separate living / dining room. We were given keys to one of the two Casitas. Thankfully it was on the West side of the island, as the East was way too windy. The living room has a nice new 70-inch TV (would have been great to have a decent speaker there too), but everything else is either old or old style. And there's no bathroom there, so if you need to do your business, you must walk out of the living room building, across to the Casita for that. By the way, the Casita is always locked and there's a key in a box to open the door. There must be a better way than that process... The two Casitas we stayed in (the first for 3 nights and the second as part of the Villa) were identical. The bed was too hard for us (they placed a foam mattress thingy, and it was better). The bathroom was great, but again, very old style. Maybe some would call this "island style", I just think it's "we will avoid renovation costs style". The TV in the Casita is placed on a wall which makes it not watchable from either the bed or the sitting area, someone must have thought long and hard to achieve this - although the GM told me that this will be addressed in an upcoming refresh of the Casitas. The Casitas have ample room, space is not an issue. The private pool of our Villa was amazing, probably what we enjoyed the most. Overall, for these prices, I was not impressed at all by the rooms. I think the rooms are overdue for a renovation. Value for Money: 2/5. It’s a no from me. I just don’t see it at these rates. If the villas were fully renovated and the policy of “charges are secret until checkout” was changed, then I might reconsider.
