Kinasi Lodge is a boutique hotel on Mafia Island, approximately 100 km south of Dar es Salaam. A short ride across the island from the airport and the main town of Kilindoni, the lodge overlooks Chole Bay in Mafia Island Marine Park. This intimate and lovely resort, situated in an old cashew and coconut plantation, provides a luxury stay amidst stylish décor and magnificent natural surroundings of the protected marine park. The swimming pool is surrounded by verdant gardens with sunbeds and alfresco lunchtime seating on the pool terrace. To add refinement there is a wine cellar with a signature wine list and an outdoor pergola cocktail bar, a spa with expert Thai personnel providing aromatherapy, Thai massage and hydrotherapy and a host of leisure time options for those after-work periods. Everything about this elegant hotel - from design and furnishing to our food & beverage and staff service - is done with a passion for perfection.

We went to Mafia for the scuba diving and whale sharks. Kinasi Lodge is beautiful and the rooms are stunning. Unfortunately the beach is not as nice as Zanzibar. The food was outstanding and the only negative was that it appeared impossible to order a cocktail at the pool. The

My partner and I stayed for 4 nights. Upon arrival we were greeted with coconuts and a lovely manager. Our room was great, overlooking an amazing pool, with palm trees and a glimpse of the ocean. After being on safari for 4 weeks this place felt like paradise! The bartenders,

First of all you state it is a three star review when it is two - perhaps you would like to give us the other star ? ....no problem with that because we were expecting this and for all the reasons you have mistakenly written.... First of all we do not entertain complaints that are not given to management on the spot, for example that someone was using your toilet or with regard to the food. Lets deal with food: We were aware of your dietary requirements and our kitchen is prepared for the myriad food demands of the modern day but we also require a bit of input from our guests. You did not appear for breakfasts and lunches on several occasions when food had been specifically prepared for you. I think you should state that in your review. And we prepared specific dinner dishes for you such as vegetarian pies. Our head chef and manager are available to discuss this with you also so why not say something if you were dissatisfied ? You can even order what you really like at Kinasi so its very easy if you communicate. On one occasion we held over lunch until after 3 pm waiting for you to appear; surely in a small hotel like ours you can mention to someone that you will not be present for lunch. for the sake of the staff. Terrible attitude of the Owner: There is an ongoing problem in the Marine Park with "beach boys" who picked you up and started taking you out. The incident you mention happened to be not of our making, The boatman you went with was mis-using another persons boat and he called me to ask if it was being used for the purpose of taking out our guests. His name is Ndimbo and he has since lost his job as a result. It was the owner of the boat who called him to give him a rocket not me (I do not have his phone number) so again you are mistaken. You are not "helping locals" at all but breaching Marine Park and local government efforts to stem the plague of beach boys who have no licenses to operate, carry no insurance, have no overheads and of course can offer a cheap, uninsured operation. They also do not pay any taxes. We employ 55 locals so it is nonsense to think you are putting money into the local community vs what we do. We adhere to 75 different licenses, fees, taxes, pay long service, etc. They adhere to none. You went out with Ndimbo and co because it was cheaper - end of story. It is absolutely not true that you were not given beach towels - we have checked with housekeeping and it certainly was not an instruction from management, In any case i had already left for Dar es Salaam for a series of meetings. The "made to feel we were waiting for us" came from your whale shark trip, which again you took with another operator (we use a local tour company for this - its not our operation so the money goes to a local guy and his team). The evening before you went on your whale shark excursion you confirmed to our staff that you were going so they duly waited for you until we checked your room and found you gone and also with the security on duty who said that you had left very early in a tuktuk. You have chosen to mix the two incidents into one which is very misleading. Toilet: Your charge that some mystery giant was using your loo is beyond anyone's imagination. You have the room key and locked you room whenever you left (we know this because we kept looking for you whenever you did not attend meals). Never in our history has this ever happened and again, you did not mention this to the manager - why not ? It is an extraordinary claim to make and absolutely unbelievable, so Kinasi would have been in uproar if your claim were true. Without saying anything to anyone while in the hotel i do not think anyone can possibly believe your statement. Whenever you give a review please base it on facts and on the basis that you have discussed any issues arising with management in-house and at the time and only after you did not succeed in getting any improvement should you make the kind of claims you have made. Going home and then giving inaccurate reviews is not very honest nor fair. We d not mind constructive criticism but I believe this review should be removed for its inaccuracies. kind regards Peter Byrne

Our three nights on Mafia island were wonderful! The Kinasi Lodge was fantastic. It is really an under-the-radar gem. The setting and grounds were idyllic. The "cabins" were luxurious and provided everything we needed to be comfortable during our stay (except be aware that they

good morning we have a 4-night package because the flights back to dar es salaam are all unpressurised and you are in danger of an embolism if you dive the day before. so we suggest 4 nights to allow 2 full days of diving and a dive on your day of arrival if the tides and your arrival flight work. all diving in the bay is tide-dependent. the diving is extremely varied with turtles, rays and over 460 species of fish and 54 genera of coral. depth is 18-28 m with walls, bommies and coral gardens. check out our kinasilodge website for the PDF download on the dive sites and the 4, 5, 7 and 10 night packages. welcome to mafia !
