The resort shows age and not well managed. Resort can be improved with a more active manager who works the grounds and interacts with guest for active feedback. Staff could care less and work within the box. It also helps if you speak Spanish as it seems they are more attentive when you do. The location and view were great. The rooms are inconsistent. Our first room old AC didn't work and no smart TV. Our second room had new AC and smart TV which was 2 doors over. Both room keys stop working the 4th night and no explanation nor apology was offered. She just rekeyed our keys and handed to us while having a conversation with another staff. Drinks in room was not replenished daily unless you ask and then you are only limited to 2 bottles of water a day. After that, fountain water at the bar. Accusing guest of already receiving 2 bottles of water for an all inclusive..... Really! Inconsistent staff training, ask the same question and you will receive different answers from different staff. Food at the buffet needs improvement. The Italian was ok. The oriental sushi rice tastes like vinegar and the main entree is overly salted. Udon is made with spaghetti pasta. All needs to be improved. The bar Pool and main pool closes at 6 and 7. Pool water is warmer that jacuzzi. Only lounge bar is open until 11pm. No nighttime activity except for a solo instrumental musician and small Disco. None existent beach bar, run down archery and volleyball court. I think with a little staff training for consistent service delivery with an active manager, this place can be improved beyond 3 stars.

Hotel is dated and not for anyone with mobility issues as there are many stairs to climb from the pool to the main building. Our room was cleaned daily and on the 3rd floor of bldg 1 which was good proximity to pool and restaurants etc., We collected some shells at the beach but not appealing to us fior lounging or swimming. A word about rooms on the main floors, there are very crafty raccoons that will enter room if doors left unlocked and also join you if you’re sitting out (friends were on this floor). The lobby bar was a favourite for drinks and cards and can recommend the spa, very clean and a great massage. Had a maintenance issue with a toilet, took 3 service calls but it did get fixed. 4 women 60+ we spent every day at the pool and while the stairs gave us a workout, it was a relaxing week.

My husband and I have traveled all over the world and this resort was by far the WORSE resort that we have ever stayed in. From day one to the end the service was terrible.
Day 1 we were made to wait 4 hours before we could go into our room. We were not greated by any staff upon arrival with the traditional cold drink and even a cool rag. Once we received our room there was no bellhop to assist with luggage
We entered our room the nightmare continue. There was mold, died bugs, soiled furniture and bedding and dirty/dingy white towels no face clothes. Immediate call to the front desk was dismissed and another call was met with a little more compassion
Day 2 The food was terrible as well as the service. We were seated and had to ask for water about 10-15 mins after being seated.
There is no service at the pools you have to walk about 1/4-1/2 miles to the bar. The premium bar which has no premium drinks is at the top of the building. Getting to this location is a challenge because you have to climb at least 4 flights of steps.
There is a pool that is another 1/4 mile or so that has a bar. But my husband and I soon found out the secret to this establishment. We were invited to swing with another couple (not interested). As the day continued we learned from staff that resort is know for couples to swing. WELL, had we known this we would not have picked this location
Long story short. If you and your spouse are swingers this may be the location for you. If you like Terrible service this is also the spot for you. If you are handicap/nursing an injury please be warned there are no elevators you will get a workout walking up and down the massive staircase each day multiple times

Reading your review that apparently you were not properly informed about the appointed check in is from 11 a.m. for using the facilities, although it should be reported on the booking confirmation; at the hotel we always do our utmost to make sure our guests can get the room as soon is ready, considering that check out is at 12 md and our housekeeping staff needs to undertake a thorough cleaning of the rooms before assigning them to new arrivals. All rooms should be thoroughly checked on a daily basis. We will make sure that the procedure is being reinforced . However, we do not seem to find records that our staff had been made aware of that while staying with us; naturally we would have changed you to another room. Run away from this place. I will first highlight the positive. They have stunning view & beautiful beach. At arrival no one from the hotel greeted us, it was actual the tour desk personnel that greeted us and directed us to where we could check in! Front desk staff had no hospitality, we were never told where to eat or how to get anywhere in the resort, again it was the personnel from On the beach tours that directed us! This hotel is run down. Rooms: maids never cleaned the floor, only changed the beds. The a/c was old and barely cooled. The bathroom is ventilated by windows, no a/c & bugs crawl thru the windows. The gap under the door is also quite large. We had crabs & other insects come into our room, including a scorpion which stung by daughter twice. Don’t mind the raccoons & the birds, those are mostly domesticated. Mind the bugs. I understand this is Costa Rica, I get the climate (mentioned on other reviews as an excuse by management) BUT this is not an Eco resort & I didn’t go camping. If my daughter had been allergic our vacation would have been over. Food: gross, disgusting, lack of variety at the mini buffet. Same food everyday for breakfast, same food everyday for lunch. Only good thing was omelet station, which by the way had same ingedients to choose from everyday. In a country known for its rich fruits this buffet has 3 types of fruits everyday. Specialty restaurants: skip The Grill, meat was the same cut, and hey just gave it a different name. Occidental was the best restaurant & the Italian was ok, but neither of the restaurants are ethnic. Alcohol: awful. Even if you pay for premium package you will only find a tiny bar on the third floor where you can get brand names like Johnny, Cuervo, or Chivas. On Friday 12/15/23 we had 5 power outages lasting anywhere from 5-10 min and again on Saturday for about 15 min. The wet bar pool hasn’t been cleaned in ages. There’s mold growing all around the tiles. Carlos the waiter at the buffet & David at the pool bar provided excellent service. If you must book here get ready to walk up and down and up and down hills & stairs. Even though there is a shuttle, you can’t always wait on them & those hills are grueling.

God awful. The food was cold and dry. Mold was on the pillows; the electric outlet and coffee maker didn't work. It was still full of water from the previous guest with a coffee packet inside. So little care was put into details. I am a property owner and manager. Before a tenant is allowed to move in, our units are thoroughly cleaned and inspected. After move out I walk through with a check list. The bar was small and always crowded. Not a great thing with covid and respiratory infections a concern. Other five star resorts typically have a server walking the ground to provide beverages. This resort didn't. Usually when the breakfast buffet opened there was a very long line at 7 a.m. After getting in you has ten minutes maybe to eat your food and get to the lobby for your tour. Once we advised our travel agent things improved. They did have the nerve to charge us $75 for a small bag of laundry. No more than a two-star rating has been earned here. If you want to be a five-star Occidental. Act like it. Towels were supplied only when asked for. Many times, we had to find a cart and take some, if we couldn't find the maid. I've read the response to other negative reviews. I am simply tempted to copy paste and save them the effort. No. I won't come back. Vacations are supposed to be carefree.

We chose this place to celebrate my husband’s Birthday. I must say we had really high expectations on this place as this is one of the top places for tourism. We chose a premium room which gave us some “special access” to premium services and we also paid for early check in (which was really just early use of the place, because the room was given to us until 3 pm). About the food: I can only say they nailed it with breakfasts. There are not a lot of options to choose from during lunch or dinners. At night, they have different food themes (Caribbean, Costa Rican, etc,) at the buffet, however, they didn’t have a lot of options to choose. There are 3 restaurants you can order from a menu, but we never were able to get any space on it, so we could not try it. There is a “snack bar” near the pool, with the same food everyday and you can’t take the food out of the building, like if you want to have some fruits in the pool or a late snack while you are enjoying the sunset. We asked everyday to get at least water at the “mini bar” in our room, and they always forgot to re-stock it, not even in first day we checked in, it was empty. About the building: Building is old, and it looks they don’t want to invest in improving the rooms. Our shower didn’t have enough water to shower daily. AC is old. WiFi never really worked properly, it was really slow. We stayed in the 3rd floor, no elevators available. The walls of the pools were dirty. The water of the pools was always really hot, you could not think about getting refresh with the weather at the pool, it was like a sauna. The beach is really nice, you have to walk quite a distance but they have internal transportation. About the employees: Some of them were really rude, it looks like they were mad at you; but some of them were really nice (Roy was really nice). Every time we called for room service, they said they were coming and no one ever showed up. About the environment: This is a adults only, so it was really calm No a lot of activities in the pools Some nights they had some guys playing violin and guitar, this was really nice.
In general, there are other All inclusive hotels in the area which I’ve been in that are way better than the Papagayo that I would recommend

Week from December 9 to 16 as a couple. We are in our forties and we were among the youngest because of the elderly clientele. We selected this resort among other things because it is adults only, but take note that the beach is public so there are still children there. Nice to go to the beach in the morning, because with the tide the water rises a lot after dinner.
The positive: we really liked the food, including the gallo pinto. Not a big variety at the buffet but it was good. The room was ready when we arrived at 4 p.m. local time. Easy to book for the à la carte restaurants (three for the week). Wifi that works everywhere except at the beach. Bracelet as a room key. Our bay view room very clean, new towels and drinks every day. There are howler monkeys on site. The staff overall are really very friendly and polite.
The negative: no sparkling wine; too bad for an 18+ hotel. No cognac for a flambé coffee. Country music playing 24/7 at the snackbar. No coffee before the buffet opens at 7 a.m. Why not leave the automatic coffee machine in the lobby bar accessible at least from 6 a.m.? The gym only opened at 6:30, we would have liked to have been able to go there a little earlier.
All in all, for the price which is more expensive than Mexico but which allows us to see something else (volcano, rainforest), we very much enjoyed our stay.

Been to 8 all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica, my wife and I agreed that this was by far the worst experience we've had...
Service attitude as the resort is generally unhelpful, even when things are clearly wrong. Example: if a recently checked in guest tells you the their room was not cleaned prior to arrival, don't act annoyed, and make it right. "All inclusive": one towel ticket issued upon arrival with a notification that a $35 charge will be applied if you don't trade it back in and get the card back for checkout. Don't bother requesting additional bath towels either. Food: Yeesh, best things on the buffet were the beans and rice, pretty much every day. You are allowed one reservation at their restaurants for every 3 nights you stay. (They were half empty every night) You're better off calling an Uber and having dinner in town anyway.
The beach is lovely and the excursions available at the tour desk are very solid. (With better meals included)
Anyway, bottom line is we will return to Costa Rica, but definitely not be going back to this resort.

Every aspect of your resort needs desperate improvement and honesty!.
Your brochure states water and beer? stocked in the room daily. This never happened. I even left messages at the check-in desk area to NO avail. This never happened!!
The menu- Bland, undercooked fries at the Grille every day, poor dressing options, the same food choices almost every day. You might have changed 1 or 2 food items.
The Premium upgrade for liquor is not worth it.
The Italian, Oriental or The Grille areas were always half full and could have accommodated more people. The "beef" was tough, chewy, and often over-cooked. Chicken was always the choice as a result.
Check-in was easy, check-out was also a breeze.
Room cleaners were unresponsive to additional needs when asks for.
