The 24-hectare coral island, located on the Southeastern tip of Cebu, is home to Bluewater Sumilon. Pristine white sand beaches abound. Its sandbar is known for its changing shapes and shifting locations around the island, depending on the season. There is a natural lagoon teeming with high mangroves. On the south side, a lighthouse rests on a protected tree park and a "Baluarte", a 19th century historical watchtower. It is also home to the Philippines' first marine sanctuary. At Bluewater Sumilon, let the islander's easy-going friendliness shine through and keep the pace low-key enough to let you feel pampered.

This is a beautiful Island. Now we didn't stay at the resort but traveled to the beach on Sumilo Island. I can tell you it's incredible. The waters of the ocean are breathtaking. You catch a small vessel across to the island. Then you have plenty of time to swim and enjoy the beach. Now be careful about the weather and how hot it gets. There is shade close to the beach. But it's limited. Above the beach is places to relax and sit in the shade. Food is allowed but not on the beach. Worth the ride out to discover something new.

A very beautiful and relaxing place to spend with your other half. Room accommodation, yummy food and excellent customer service completes our stay here on what we called paradise. A lot of activities, we have also enjoyed during our stay. Thanks to Bluewater Sumilon for a one of a kind experience.

My wife and I were so hyped to spend a night at Sumilon Island Resort during our honeymoon. Unfortunately, we left feeling totally ripped off.

While the island is beautiful, the food is decent and we had a great romantic dinner at the lagoon, the so-called “resort” is being taken over by the “day-tour” visitors every single day.

The price for the cheapest room is around 200 USD, while the day-tour costs only 30 USD and allows the tourists to use all the amenities of the resort the entire day, including the pool, beach, kayaking in the lagoon, the white sandbar and much more. They also get a full buffet lunch.

Due to the 100 tourists coming to the island everyday using the day-tour package, the island doesn’t feel private at all, as a resort should be. The day-tour visitors take over all the seats at the pool and the cabanas at the beach. The white sandbar is everyday totally occupied.

Day-tour visitors basically pay a tenth of what a real guest pays and they get to enjoy all the benefits the island has to offer including all the resort amenitiez. We often even felt these visitors received more attention from the staff than we did.

We felt very disappointed and believe Sumilon Island Resort should rethink the day-tour package they offer to tourists visiting the island for 1 day. It really makes you as a overnight staying guest feel ripped off for what you’ve paid. You could easily sleep at the mainland for just 20 USD / night and take the day-tour everyday for 30 USD / day and you’ll have the same experience for 80 USD instead of minimum 200 USD / night to sleep at the island itself. This is probably what a lot of people are doing and I can’t blame them.

We were also amazed that you need to pay extra for mineral water. You only get 2 very small complimentary bottles of water in the room everyday. For such a so-called high-end resort, you would expect the water to be free for guests. Ironically, the day-tour visitors get a bottle of mineral water as well which is included in the 30 USD price.

Also to be noted, the pool and the villas are outdated and need to be renewed. Especially the pool really needs work.

This island has so much potential as a real getaway resort, unfortunately it’s far from what you would expect it to be and how it looks like on pictures and videos.

If you expect a private island resort, then this is not the place to go. My wife and I wish someone would have warned us, hence this review.

CLEANLINESS: Need to be garbage free in the snorkeling / diving spots around the Western Dock where the shifting white sandbar is. Sometimes garbage even appears in the sandbar itself. The resort seems to have a problem in proper waste disposal.

LOCATION: Quite far from the city takes a minimum of 3 hours drive. Advisable to depart from the city as early as 4am to catch the first boat trip to the island around 7:30am. It's seclusion is one its major strength and the view is simply astonishing.

VALUE: Since I'm reviewing the day tour for the fee of P1500 *weekdays (P2000 *weekends & holidays) you'll get the most out of your money because the island has jam packed with activities to do and you won't cover all if you get stuck in enjoying one activity so much. Advisable to bring trekking shoes for trek to the lighthouse & baluarte.

FOOD: Day Tour offers three course meal. Not quite sufficient to be called as a feast but enough to suffice your hunger. The food is okay not something that will blow your taste buds away. Appetizer includes fish fillet with squash soup, 5 options for the main meal and has only a mango flan for the dessert *very disappointing* and when I look at their menu there's not a lot of variety and options.

If seclusion and relaxation with the bareness of nature that you're looking for then this island got a lot to offer on that and the many activities will not bore you but if you're the type who expects a really luxurious stay with elegance and posh toned in mind then I doubt this resort can offer you that. Most of what that they offer is on the basic level. One thing that really makes this place stand out is its location. Everything you could ever wanted on a tropical island getaway the island has it. I'm a simple man who has needs so I enjoyed my day tour experience a lot.

+ Beautiful location - serene beaches, tranquil lagoon, breath taking view.
+ Serenity, isolation and privacy.
+ Warm, hospitable staff.
- Trash management in the Shifting Sandbar.
- Safety is not properly ensured with the lack of lifeguard and safety orientation.
- Overprice menu with lacking in variety.

February 2013 Dear Mirxi, Thank you for your detailed feedback on your recent stay at Bluewater Sumilon. We truly appreciate your comments and suggestions to provide for a better guest experience. We are happy to note that you enjoyed your Day Tour, particularly the warm hospitality of our staff, island activities and Sumilon’s beautiful location. Your comments for improvement are also much appreciated. It is always our aim to preserve the beauty and cleanliness of the environment in this unique island. We have regular cleaning and proper disposal systems in place at the resort. However, keeping outside wastes from washing in to the island has always been our challenge, especially in public areas like the Sandbar. Consequently, we have put up clean-up guide posts and directed our staff to double our efforts in removing outside waste. We are also currently in the process of reviewing our menu to offer guests a better variety. Our guests’ safety, as well, is a primary concern and we are investigating on this reported breakdown of our standard safety procedures. Concerned staff will be reprimanded and re-trained accordingly. Again thank you for bringing the above matters to our attention. We look forward to welcoming you back with an even better service and experience at our beautiful island resort. At your service, EDISON NAVAS Resident Manager Bluewater Sumilon

Dear EdS16, We sincerely apologize for the experience you have with the native inhabitants of the island. We want you to know that we are doing our very best to control and eradicate these rodents. But Sumilon being a protected area we also consider the threat of haphazard extermination methods to other species like birds, the Philippine monitor lizard as well as other endemic species who call the island home. True to our commitment in preserving the natural beauty of the island we can only use natural methods to eradicate these rodents like traps, introduction of natural predators and even manually hunting down these pesky creatures one by one. Bluewater Sumilon Island is known for its cleanliness and world class service that is true to the ethos of the Bluewater brand. Rest assured that this problem will be very well under control soon and we would like to have you back during the opening of our newly built rooms and villa’s to the island. We are constantly improving our facilities there in order to serve you better and further encourage your trust and confidence to the Bluewater brand. Thank you very much. Me and my children decided to have a trip to Sumilon. After 3 hours ride from Cebu,we arrived at sumilon. On our way to the boat, the security guard stopped us and advised us that the chips we are bringing have corkage charge. I asked if they will consider since it's for the children's snack but he refused. He let us wait and entertained other guest. He also checked one passengers bag and found food inside, since the guest was a foreigner, he let him through. We were exhausted from our trip and we were attacked by unreasonable circumstance. My children were crying knowing that their snacks will be taken from them. Our purpose of going to your place is to enjoy and not be jailed by your rules. In the first place, you have limited snacks available from your front office. Your people should be flexible and well informed to be sensitive in dealing with their guest.

The island has very clear, shallow waters for snorkelling with different types of fish to see. Aside from that, the service of the staff was very poor. Nobody is ever around when you need something. And when you do ask for something they never get back to you. The rooms we stayed in were supposedly new, but it was full of insects. We were constantly being hounded by flying roaches, giant spiders and mosquitos. As if that is not bad enough, we came home covered with bed bug bites! Upon checkin, the staff introduced the island, saying that there is a marine sanctuary, a lighthouse and a Baluarte (fort) which can all be reached via a trekking trail. So we decided to take the trail to see all the landmarks. Firstly, there was no guide to accompany you. The map that they provide is not detailed. At one point on the trail, there was no sight of where to continue, so we called the hotel. They told us the wrong direction to turn!!! It was a good thing, we had insisted that somebody come and find us to take us out of the woods! Sumilon definitely needs to upgrade its facilities and provide much better service to really showcase what the island has to offer.

I am very disappointed with our 3D/2N visit during the holy week. This is our second time here and all I could say is that their service has completely declined upside down from my visit 2 years ago. F&B staff are very inattentive and incompetent, it seems so hard for guests' to call a staff's attention especially 'Elle'. Once we were dining for lunch, they even forgot one order of ours which made us very pissed because it was clearly ordered. Considering their 5-star rates, they should be able to provide outstanding service which is totally not the case. To be fair, the island resort is nice but service is very poor.

Depend on your budget. If you want a cheaper way. Ride a MyBus from airport to SM City, taxi from SM City to South Bus Terminal. Ceres bus from South Bus Terminal to Oslob (Sumilon Port)
