Hotel's Favorite
This hotel has a lot going for it: - the pool: very big, clean, with extremely comfortable and plentiful loungers which are easy to move around, lots of sun shades and limitless, freshly laundered, good quality towels - food and drink: lots of choice, infinite supply, good food, beer, wine and cocktails included in your all inclusive deal. If you want to order from their wine list you can spend from a bit to a lot in each restaurant, and if you go to Maria Dolores, neither food or drink is included in the package. But otherwise, everything is. From the especially delicious tuna tostadas at El Suspiro to the flame grilled rib eye steaks at Los Abrazos, and the most delicious spring rolls at Takeshi, it's very impressive - the weather: I appreciate this is outside the control of the hotel, but its been really warm, with a lovely breeze, and barely any mosquitoes. Perfect! - the staff: almost all have been very friendly, helpful and enthusiastic despite what I perceive to be long days of hard work keeping all the guests happy - the hotel: very clean, well landscaped with lots of plants, great gym. This is a very well equipped hotel. Also really liked the econcierge facility for quick online chat enquiries, made extra easy by the Atelier app and excellent, reliable, strong WiFi literally everywhere at this hotel. A couple of minor niggles for me: - I was expecting at least some of the food to be spicy and it really wasn't. I get the need to cater for all palates so suggest doing what they do at the Cilento restaurant and leaving a pot of chilli flakes (or chilli oil), salt and pepper on each table - signage isn't great. When you've been here a few days it starts to make sense but when we arrived we weren't shown to our room but instead taken to a lift and told which floor to go to. We got lost, returned to reception and despite asking, couldn't get someone to show us. - the other guests: not helped by some very large groups attending the conference venue at the hotel and probably some all day drinking, some of the guests are seemingly unaware that this isn't exclusively their hotel. Very noisy and splashy and frankly self unaware. There are very few hotel rules (smoking areas, dress code in places, and not drinking in the pool) none of which were enforced by the staff - constant loud music by the pool. Mostly to my taste so generally not an issue for me, but when I could hear one set of tunes from the bar and another from the pool activity (eg aqua zumba) at the same time, it's less pleasant. In summary, a great value and high quality holiday probably best suited to sociable, lively guests who like to be entertained and get involved. Having said that, my husband and I are definitely not that kind of guest and we still had a great time and may well come back

There are somethings that separate resort from resort here in Mexico. One part of that is the staff that you are constantly around that enhances a getaway. I want to take this moment thank the whole staff at Atelier for their generosity, friendliness, and professionalism. I will also want to take a second to thank some specific people who we interacted with during the daily entertainment, at the bars, and the beach during our week-long stay. Thank you to James, Sergio, Belem, Marcos, David, Alejandro, Fernando, and definitely Hervey! Our trip was made so much better, not only by how great the resort is, but by everyone involved making sure we were taken care of. We will 100% be coming back and hope to see all our new friends again!

We visited Atelier with a group of nine, for a friend’s birthday. We stayed across 5 swim-out rooms in the Inspira section. My husband and I have been to other resorts in Playa Mujeres and also in the Playa del Carmen area. The competition Atelier has in this area is very, very good and the Atelier is not winning. The facility overall is excellent. The maintenance, decor, landscaping is all beautiful. We love the modern style of the rooms here, our bed was very comfortable, the shower is great. We were disappointed with the design of our swim-out room. The pool faces a jungle and there is no view which makes the swim-out pool just seem a bit closed-in and depressing. There are walls separating the outdoor patio of each room which is great for privacy but also blocks any breeze that way come through, making the patio extremely hot even in the shade. There is also no food or beverage service at the swim-out pool and there is no way they could ever implement this due to the design. This may be fine depending on what you’re looking for but one of our favorite parts of the swim-outs at Excellence is the concierge and drink service just outside your door. The food here, overall is excellent. We had great meals at Abrazos, Takeshi and Maria Dolores. The food is flavorful and cooked expertly; we also had great service at all the restaurants we went to. We had a wine tasting with Ivette which was a major highlight. She took us through 6 Mexican wines and in selecting the wines for us, we could tell she had really listened to what we liked and wanted to experience. The food we were served as part of the wine tasting was also wonderful. Compared to other places we’ve been, there is not as much selection on the breakfast buffet. However, the quality, flavor and freshness of everything they have on offer is great. Drinks here - also great overall. They have a wonderful selection of gins at the lobby bar and the bartenders there are very knowledgeable. I was really impressed that our bartender knew so much about gin! The piña coladas at the swim-up bars are also great - very fresh flavors. The cocktails at Maria Dolores did not impress me - this may be a matter of personal taste but mine tasted like Tang. All of that being said - my biggest complaint about the Atelier and the reason I’m not likely to return, is the service and lack of guest focus overall. There are a couple of incidents that led to that conclusion - First, the air conditioning in our room. It was set to 22C when we arrived. That’s fine but we like to sleep a bit colder. Apparently guests are not given free agency to set their own room temperature and one must call the front desk. This is not explained anywhere because the thermostat can be adjusted, but this apparently does nothing. I find it extremely absurd that as a guest at a supposed “5+ star” resort I am not able to freely adjust the temperature of my room? This gives me the same vibes as when I was in middle school in North Carolina and the A/C would be on full blast on a winter day because “the temperature is set at the head office.” Just completely absurd. Also, it took two calls to get the air adjusted to our liking and finally, the occupancy sensor will cut off the A/C in the middle of the night because it doesn’t detect motion. For a property completed in 2018 I would expect better technology. Second, our excursion. We planned a private yacht tour through the concierge. The hotel provided for us boxed lunches, some champagne and mixers we could use with the liquor from our rooms onboard the yacht. Great - that’s really nice and thoughtful. Wait… they delivered all the mixers in a giant tub like 2 days before our excursion to one of our groups’ rooms. We also asked for ginger ale and club soda, to go with the rum and vodka the hotel provides in-room. They gave us ginger ale and tonic water… we’re not vodka tonic drinkers so we asked for gin to go with the tonic - “oh, that’ll be $100USD.” That left a bad taste in my mouth. The day before the tour they called someone in our group at 9:30am saying our boxed lunches were ready. Our departure was for 8am the following day!? Finally - day of the tour - 8am - they meet us in the lobby with 5 boxed lunches. There are 9 in our group. Yesterday at 9:30am, there were 9 box lunches. Now there are 5. Three in our group are gluten free - we had 2 lunches that were marked gluten free but only 1 of the 2 actually contained gluten free food. As it turned out, there were 2 other gluten free sandwiches mixed in with the other lunches. Again… the thought is great and the intent was there but the execution is just not. At a 5-star resort, I would have expected mixers and lunches to be delivered to my transportation without me having to deal with logistics, lugging tubs around the hotel, etc. Overall just sub-par and a bit disappointing. Third, just an overall lack of attention to detail. We had to call multiple times about the A/C. The staff apparently confused the birthday girl of our party with someone else, so they delivered all the birthday surprises to the wrong room. When we pointed that out, they said it was intentional and that they had another surprise for the birthday girl the next day. Spoiler - there was no surprise. We only received turndown service every other day. Some of these things are definitely a bit nitpicky but some are legitimate issues. Especially for a property that is billing itself as “5+ stars,” they have some issues to work out. I don’t think any of these issues boil down to specific staff members. Every person I encountered here was genuine, kind, caring and I think actually wanted to help. In my opinion they have a systems / process / management issue. The whole operation here seems to run on slips of paper, word of mouth and sticky notes. Computers exist! Use those! It could be so much better! The dysfunction from systems or management or whatever really sells the staff short, because they seem incompetent when they’re actually really wonderful and genuinely want to help. I sincerely hope they can improve the service here because the facility is absolutely gorgeous and the food is wonderful. We still had a wonderful time and enjoyed the experience overall. It’s just not somewhere I would return when their competition just a mile down the road delivers a substantially better experience at a similar price point.

We had such an amazing time at the resort. The food was incredible and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Especially our new friend Luis Carbajal! If you’re looking for something fun to do by the pool, the entertainment staff (Marcos, Hervey, Alejandro, and Jorge) is the best and will make sure you’re always having a good time!! We spent a lot of time by the beach, served mostly by Hansel, José, and Sergio (I highly recommend finding a section where they are located) and we were always properly cared for, also knowing that our belongings were safe while we went into the ocean. The last day of the trip, we got the best 90min massages of our lives from Maria and Guadalupe, as well as a facial. I suggest more than 5 nights - there’s so much to do and try at the resort itself, so you need all the time to do it all! We will definitely be back.
