We had a wonderful stay at this old mansion in Basco. Its within a block of the town center so everything in town is within easy walking distance. Rooms and beddings are kept immaculately clean by the caretakers who also prepared wonderful local breakfasts for us.

While the house is old (with 10-inch thick concrete walls!) they have modern amenities like air conditioning. Possibly my only complaint is that there are no ensuite bathrooms - only one per floor. But with only three large bedrooms (we got two and the third was vacant) it worked out well.

Would definitely recommend Rapitan di Vasay for anyone wanting a nice place to stay in Basco Batanes

No regrets at all for choosing Rapitan di Vasay as our base in Batanes. Three friends and I were fortunate to have booked ourselves at this centrally located and well-maintained place. The wholesome spacious bedrooms with comfortable beds, very clean toilet and bathrooms, spotless white beddings and towels all sum up to plus factors for this place. In addition, we were served scrumptious breakfasts at a good price. (My coffee-drinking friends just wished there was brewed coffee.) The staff were always helpful and courteous in dealing with us. Even the owners Ms. Yolanda and Ms. Chita (through long-distance communications) were concerned that we had a comfortable stay. We were stranded for 2 days in Batanes due to inclement weather and they graciously gave us good discounted rates for the unexpected extended stay.

I would certainly recommend Rapitan di Vasay as THE place to stay in Batanes. And, if I had a chance to revisit Batanes, this will surely be my facility of choice again.

I reserved a room for me and my sister months ago, made necessary down payment. Then later on, my nieces decided to join us in our travel to Batanes so I asked for another room to accommodate my 3 nieces. Unfortunately, according to owner, all rooms will be occupied by then but she said that IDAWUD room can accommodate up to 4 pax. So I thought, we can check the room first. If we cannot fit in, we can look for another place for my nieces. On May 2, the day we arrived. We were warmly welcomed by the staff of Rapitan Di Vasay. We were allowed to check in at IDAWUD room. Later that day, the owner who is based in US called, talked to me and said that we need to transfer in a room in the ground floor, which can accommodate 5 pax. The room was clean but it has a smell of old wood and cement. My niece has asthma so I told the owner we are willing to pay the IDAWUD room at the price of the room located in the ground floor. We're comfortable in the IDAWUD room, it's more ventilated though not air conditioned. I expected the owner to be accommodating, considerate but she's not. She even said that she doesn't care if we'll feel uncomfortable. It's either we take the room downstairs or we leave and look for another place to stay. If not for that experience with the owner, I would say that the experience would be good. PROS: good location (near airport, stores, restaurants, ATM) clean rooms, bedsheets, towels, accommodating staff. CONS: owner is based in US so she cannot assess and attend to the needs of guests, staff cannot decide by themselves, no air conditioned rooms, you cannot bring food from outside, pricey breakfast at Php250 per head, no generator in case of brownouts.

Our group of 7 travelers stayed at Rapitan di Visay in Basco town proper. While there are a lot of choices for accomodations in Batanes, I found this property very unique and interesting. From the reviews on tripadvisor, I was convinced that this is an ideal place to spend our 4 nights away from our homes. The house is originally a residence of the Acacio family, and renovated it into a lodge for Batanes travellers, and it was a good decision indeed to have chosen this place. It's practically a home away from home. The entire house is very simple and cozy, with white walls all around that made it look really neat. The bedrooms are very spacious, especially the ones on the second floor. Beddings and bathroom linen are color white (which matters to me), and are very clean and fresh. The mattresses are firm and there were enough fluffy pillows in each room, which made our nights' rest very comfortable. The bathrooms (shared) are white-tiled too, and are kept immaculately clean and dry during our entire stay. Showers were working very well with hot and cold settings. Toilets are very clean. Airconditioning units are not installed in any of the rooms, but it was not a problem since we were out most of the time, and the entire house had a lot of windows which made it breezy even in the afternoons. The staff is very hospitable, especially Kuya Neo who greeted us at the airport. The kitchen crew was very warm and friendly too, and they made sure we had a hearty meal each morning. Breakfast served is good and neatly prepared. Servers at breakfast wore hairnet all the time, which for me is an indicator of how cleanliness and hygiene is valued. I would recommend this place to those travelling in groups. The house can accomodate 10 persons. You could rent 1 or 2 rooms only, but better to rent the whole property if you want real privacy.

During our entire stay, Kuya Neo got us a tour guide, who made sure we saw the best sights in Batanes. We were very thankful that we were assigned, not just an ordinary guide, but one that acted like a 'baby sitter' to all of us. She attended to all our needs and requests and made sure we were having a good time. And we sure did! I would recommend her services to other travellers. Just give her a call... Hilda Agsolid (cp# 09472158098). Maraming Salamat Ate Hilda! Miss ka na namin! :-)

Batanes is one of my favorite phil. destinations so far. The scenery is just breathtaking wherever you go. And you just can't stop taking photos everywhere you look. Earth Sea and Sky - That's all you see, but each corner has its own unique characteristic, and it gets you mesmerized... how beautifully god 'crafted' the world. Great for meditation, relaxation and rest. And try biking around town, or drive your own motorcycle and feel that very distinct simplicity of life that's Batanes...

Hope this review helps. :-)

The first thing Tita Chita (the owner of Rapitan di Vasay) asked us when we arrived was "Why did you choose Batanes?" I said, "Why not?". Batanes has always been at the top of my bucket list. The people I know who have been there have all been raving about the islands beauty.

I found the reviews of other travellers who have stayed in Rapitan spot on. The renovated heritage house exceeded our expectations. With 8 of us in our group (including a 1 year old baby) comfort and affordability are at the top of our considerations. The house was spotless & the rooms cozy. I loved the fact that the owners preserved the original features of the house like the floorboards, ceiling & windows which made us experience what living in Batanes actually feels like.

They provide all the amenities that a traveler looks for at an affordable price. Included are:
beddings, towels, soap, shampoo, hot water in the shower and even cable tv in the living room. The house has 3 rooms which will comfortably fit 10 people. It also has an upstairs balcony and downstairs undercover veranda where we relaxed & exchanged stories with Tita Chita, Kuya Neo, etc. Breakfast served was sumptuous and provided a good kick start to the event-filled days that we had.

They also introduced us to a wonderful guide, Hilda, and van with driver who took us around Batanes for the duration of our stay.

Rapitan di Vasay was an excellent choice! It is centrally located, close to the airport, and walking distance to the church, restaurants, stores, etc.

Batanes.....I shall return!

I hugely enjoyed my stay at Rapitan. The whole experience was wonderful, the airport pickup , the modern and clean bathrooms , the roomy and comfortable bedrooms, the homely sitting room, and the balconies for watching Basco life pass by. Our hosts could not have been more helpful and friendly. The breakfast was served in a spotless dining area each morning. This guest house offers excellent value for money. Having travelled extensively around the Philippines for the last 5 years I am familiar with the types of accommodation usually offered in the less commercial tourist spots; This is a "real gem" and offers excellent value for money . Suitable for either couples, friends sharing or for larger family group (you can rent whole house) - you wont be disappointed :)

It was our first time in Batanes. Travelling as a family-group of 4 people, they have a room big enough to accommodate all of us. As we know that Batanes is quite remote, we didn't expect anything grand. However, we were surprised to find that this place feels like being home- our room is very spacious with comfortable beds and clean.I like the traditional windows and the thick walls which reminds me of the Hispanic era.
We were situated on the bottom floor, so we also have our own bathroom and a shared dining area. The bathroom has a shower and hot/cold water supply.Toiletries and clean towels are provided. There is a fridge. water station and the kitchen is accessible from the dining area with microwave, kettle, etc. Clean dinnerware and cutlery are of good quality and are accessible in the dining area cupboards.
They have two other rooms upstairs and a shared living area where you can watch TV or read books. We ordered breakfast for a few days and we enjoyed the presentation as well as the quality of the food that they served (traditional dried fish, poached eggs, fried rice, fern salad, sweet potato coated with sugar, etc.)- local, fresh produce.
The location of this accommodation is central as well- it is walking distance to the town center and markets.
The attendants are very friendly and helpful.
The only advice I have- is to bring insect repellent (OFF, Aeroguard, etc.) to protect your skin from insect bites, as it seems that people there don't generally use insecticides/ pesticides.
If you are after wifi/ internet and modern conveniences, this is not the place for you (or Batanes in itself). But if you are after relaxation, freedom from the hustle and bustle of a busy life, you will enjoy this place.

Booked Rapitan di Vasay because I liked its reviews from Trip Advisor. Emailed RDV for reservations for only 2 pax and immediately got a reply that a 4pax room is their only available room for our first two nights and we can transfer for the 2pax room for our last two nights. I agreed since all the homestays I checked were already fully booked. The place is an ancestral home and well managed, rooms are airy and clean plus the shared bathrooms are clean and spacious. The location is right in the center of the town, 5 minute drive from the airport and a block or two away from the market place. My only problem is when we occupied the downstairs room (Kagtin room), we can hear every noise and footsteps of the guests upstairs and this bothered me since I'm a light sleeper. My companion even complained of the loud conversation voices upstairs and footsteps which rattles the side wall of our room near the bed, to think that she can sleep with the television on. So when we transferred to the upstairs room (Idawud room) for our last two nights, I can see now why the footsteps are easily felt downstairs, the floor is made of wood and when you walk it really makes a sound even if you walk lightly which I did because I was conscious of the new occupants downstairs. Overall I prefer to stay in the Idawud room upstairs. The staff were very accommodating and easy to talk to. The breakfast is not worth the P250 price so we opted to have our breakfast delivered by a local carinderia in the vicinity.

I spent two nights with a friend at Rapitan di Visay in January 2013 and we really enjoyed our stay. The place, particularly the bathrooms, were immaculately clean, and the staff were extremely pleasant and accommodating and helpful about answering questions and arranging tours. The B&B is conveniently located in the center of Basco town in an old, renovated house which was built around 1908. The interior has furniture and fixtures dating back to an earlier period which gives the place a bit of character and provides guests with an idea as to what the house looked like when the owner's family lived there. They also offer an excellent breakfast which I highly recommend. Overall, we were extremely pleased with the place and found it to be great value for the price. We would definitely stay there again if we ever return to Batanes.

As Batanes is so remote, any type of online connection is 'iffy' at best. I had a local sim card with provider Globe, and even mobile/cell signal was intermittent. Batanes really is the type of switch-off from social media type of place. Just book a night or more, you won't regret it!!
