Value
A prime mountain eleven-room boutique hotel and restaurant in world-famous Basco, Batanes, Pension Ivatan is more than just a place. Rather, it is the must-have Batanes experience. Our kind of service is highly personal yet very professional. It is intimate yet never intrusive. Staying at Pension Ivatan feels more like being welcomed to a private home, albeit one with the service ethic of a first class hotel.

This pension house's restaurant may not have a spectacular view of Basco's sunset to offer (as other eateries in town do), but it has a very nice and neat dining area, a good selection of food and drinks (including some native Ivatan dishes), a strong WIFI signal, and is located just right across the Basco Airport. The staff members are also very friendly and accommodating and service is fast. The town proper of Basco is just a stone throw's away, too. Thumbs up!

The main office is situated just outside of the gates of the Airport, but we were housed on the other street (10 minutes walk from their main office - I gave Location a "2" since we had to walk to their main office to eat. Food can be delivered to your bungalow if they had enough staff during that time). The bungalow had three rooms; we occupied just one (P1,300 for two people, overnight). It had everything that a Traveller would need : Towels, TV, and Ref (can't recall if there were toiletries). Shower was acceptable - the pressure is a bit low, but bearable. They had a bits of problems making the water system function - but that is hardly an inconvenience.

Batanes is rural and restaurants and "carinderias" are difficult to come by. P.Ivantan can take care of this. Food is sold at a fair price of around P150 per meal.

During our stay, a large group of people from a certain company was occupying the main building rooms. Their staff was short-handed, but the Pension house did try their best to address our needs as well.

Other things in mind:
- Mattress is a bit soft.
- clean, but sometimes, if staff is short handed, they aren't able to prepare your rooms way ahead your stay.
- Nice garden landscape architecture in the bungalow where we slept.

Overall (Very Good Rating)
- good value for money
- they ensure you'll have meals - food is difficult to come-by Basco

Do try this out! It's just P1,200 versus the P7,000 (minimum) of Pacita per night. Besides, you'll always be up to travelling when you're in the island!

When you book with Pension Ivatan Hometel, you don't really get a room, but a cozy bungalow. There were only three of us, but we were given a bungalow with three bedrooms, a living room, and dining room. It's location is very convenient, it's along the main road of Basco, and only a few minutes' walk from the airport and the Pension Ivatan Restaurant.

The food at the restaurant is great. The servings are huge! The staff and the owner are very nice and accommodating. They'll do your best to answer your questions. You can also opt to have the food served in your bungalow if you don't feel like walking for ten minutes.

I recommend that you avail of the tour packages they offer, especially if it's your first time in Batanes. Their four-day package includes three full meals everyday, tours, guide fees and all transfers, which I found very convenient. Keep in mind that everything is shipped to Batanes, and food might be more expensive than in other provinces in the Philippines.

The only con is the water supply, but it seems to be a problem in all of Batan Island, so I can't really fault them for that.

My mom and sister stayed in Pension Ivatan's Kayvaluganan Hometel last March 4-7 2012. It's a bungalow type house with 3 bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, a common dining area with refrigerator, a small receiving area with TV and a little front yard garden. Luckily, we were the only occupants of the house at that time since the common area is quite small if all the 3 bedrooms are occupied. Our bedroom is air conditioned with 1 queen size bed and a single bed. It's a basic accommodation so don't expect too much but at a rate of P1800 per night for the 3 of us, I guess its pretty much acceptable.

Pros:
1. The main plus point is the location- in the main road of Basco. It is walking distance to their famous Pension Ivatan restaurant which is just across the airport. You can even request to have the food delivered to your place, not in styro but in ceramic bowl freshly cooked and piping hot. So it still like eating dine-in. You can walk to the port, the municipal plaza and explore the town even at night.
2. The supervisor Ms. Lorie and the rest of the staff are always smiling and very accommodating.
3. Communication is not difficult, if you have concerns or any changes in reservations, you can easily e-mail the owner Ms. Tess Valiente.

Cons:
1. If you want a stunning view of the sea and overview of Batanes seascape then this is not the place for you... you should consider Batanes resort or Fundacion Pacita.
2. There are lots of ants in the toilet and on our last day of stay, there are even ants falling from the ceiling light to our bed. I hope they get rid of this crawling insects.
3. When we arrive, I think they are still cleaning the other room. The chairs and table in the dining area are dusty and the water heater was left with stale water full of dead ants.
This was brought to the house keeper's attention and they did clean them.
4. Please update your hometel description- no minibar and fluffy pillows please
5. They only provide towels and pillows- so you have to bring your own blanket and toiletries.
6. I'm not sure if this a common problem in Basco, but they forgot to mention to us that there was no water in the wee hours of the morning. So you have to fill the big plastic bucket with water.

If you have simple needs and you don't want to splurge on accommodation then this is an ok place to stay. Basic with a convenient location plus good food. But the next time I go back to Batanes, I will probably stay in Batanes Resort- the rate is the same although a bit far from town proper approx 3km., it has a sea scape view. However, I will still eat in Pension Ivatan restaurant. If money is not an issue and you want to splurge then stay in Fundacion Pacita, the place is amazing.

Batanes is an amazing place, still untainted by modernization and not yet touristy so include this in your bucket list. I would recommend you get an independent tour guide so can arrange your own itinerary. We were lucky to have Kuya Romy Merida as our tour guide.

We didn't stay at Pension Ivatan, but we ate dinner there. They are popular for their Ivatan Platter which I can say is pretty yummy. The platter was huge. We were 7 in the group, and we could hardly finish it. If you want an introduction to Ivatan food, then this is the place to go, where you can try the authentic Ivatan dishes and also learn their names.

The platter included the following:
- Tatus - coconut crab
- Fried Fish
- Lunis (Ivatan adobo)
- Uved (Meatballs made of banana trunk, pork and dibang - flying fish)
- BBQ
- Pako (wild ferns) with yummy bagoong
- Atchara
- Turmeric (yellow ginger) rice
- others which I have already forgotten, haha

We also had tinolang manok, made with turmeric (yellow ginger) powder which is abundunt here.

Also to cap off, we had Ube Halaya with cheese. This is also a popular delicacy. You can really taste the ube flavor unlike the commercial counterparts. And the saltiness of the cheese on top actually complements the sweet ube very well. Oh, it wasn't too sweet too which is just perfect for me.

Outside the restaurant towards the kitchen area, they have a big live coconut crab kept in a birdcage, haha. So if you haven't seen one, this is your chance.

The place also has a souvenir shop where you can buy magnets, turmeric powder, and other handicrafts such as abaca fans, smaller versions of the traditional headress vakul, and baskets

The owner/manager of the restaurant was very accommodating and she came several times to the table to make sure everything is alright. She is seen later chatting with guests and making them very welcome. It is also well staffed.

We ordered ube halaya to bring back home to Manila, and we were able to pick it up the morning before we left, they open at 6am and they are located across the airport, so it's very convenient.

food is bad , so pricey and yet so ordinary. we ordered the ivatan traditional dishes, read good reviews and my family thought it would be good to give it a try. but we were so disappointed with the food, so ordinary, even grilled chicken is tasteless, the only best food we ordered is the pako salad, everything is expensive. a 25 pesos per kilo of camote at the wet market, will cost you 150 at pension ivatan. gosh! And one more thing, lots of flies , too!

I would say that it always takes perspective to appreciate things. Everything in Pension Ivatan is dated, but hey, Basco is dated so I'd say my stay was at par with what the province has to offer.

I flew to Batanes with literally no expectations except for the scenic views I am to experience in the couple of days I was to roam around the islands. And the province does not disappoint, even as you fly over, before landing, you'll really see rolling hills everywhere and yes, the music from the Sound of Music start humming in your ears.

Back to my review of Pension Ivatan. At the airport, we were greeted by Jhazon holding waving our name. Then we rode that their Starex (soon enough we found out, everything is walking distance, so the van ride really was a good transition from Urban to Rural experience). Then we went to their restaurant to Check-in. Pension Ivatan restaurant is literally across the street from the airport and the hometel is some 2 minutes drive.

The is humid and hot when we arrived so our decision to have our tours on day 2 was a good one for us to really adjust to the climate. Yes, for three days, the wind was hot which is quite norm as the locals didnt really bothered with it but I was sweating my everywhere in my body. So we stayed in our rooms (for Day1), as it was airconditioned, and only went out for a very late Lunch.

Day2 we were quite adept to the heat already but still I was sweating like hell. We requested for breakfast to be served super early as our tour was scheduled to start at 6AM as we were going to Sabtang Island. Jennifer smilingly delivered our breakfast at 530AM. We had simple tocino, but it was the best tocino I have ever tasted. Right sweet taste as well as pork tenderness. Coffee was also good, later on we knew that it was Kaliraya Brew (if i'm not mistaken). After that, we have looked forward to breakfast which was always served with Jennifer's smile and that brew of coffee goodness. We had choices for Tapa, tocino and fish fillet. Tapa was also super good.

Jennifer religiously made up our room everyday and changes our towels as well. That was all that I needed for a hotel stay in the province, fresh towels and daily clean up.

There is no wifi in the hometel but there is satellite cable. Other hotels offer wifi (but with no bfast, it really was a trade off we had to consider and we went for free bfast) but with the signal quality telecoms offer in the province, the choice was clear for us to go for food. Signal in Batanes only affords for E and 3G never occurs. In some areas you dont get service.

All in all, on our next visit, im definitely staying again in Pension Ivatan as location wise it is good and service wise it is at par with what the province has to offer.

Pension Ivatan has the best food in Batanes. We stayed in a refurbished home that was a fake ivatan house. We took the whole 3 room house. Water was a weird thing were we has to participate in the opening and closing of the pump. Located at the center of Basco. Pleasant to walk around the town. I did not expect plush accommodations so was not surprised nor annoyed. It is adequate for a short visit, and Batanes is worth the visit. The service is personal and they don't seem that organized but they try. It made it pleasant. The rooms and toilets are basic and not that clean. Could really have been better but it was tolerable because of the place. Since you have a house to yourself, it was nice and private. It had a small garden that is appreciable. Try the Ivatan platter and the other platters in their restaurant. Good halo-halo and native desserts. We got the whole tour package so there were lunches that they packed for us. It was a buffet picnic treat. They catered feast for us in a moonlight dinner at the grounds of the lighthouse near Basco. That was special! There is no place in the Philippines like Batanes, so go.

We visited last december 2018 and ordered the Ivatan Platter. We expected too much because they are all over instagram. The food was presented really well but all tasted bland. :(

You will be overwhelmed when your order arrives at the table because it is well presented, but you will be underwhelmed once you’ve tasted it. We were disappointed with the Ivatan platter because it was supposed to showcase the delicious and authentic cuisine of the Ivatans.

The only delicious thing we’ve ordered is the dessert which is the kamote flan. We even ordered another round of the dessert after we finished the first flan. If you come at Pension Ivatan, just order the Kamote Flan. If you want traditional authentic Ivatan food, you’re better off somewhere else.

Food taste is subjective and most tourists come to us because of our food. We do, however, value your opinion and we'll find ways how to satisfy all if not, the majority of our customers' palate. We are happy that you're able to enjoy our Wakay Flan (Camote Flan) Thank you.
