Batanes is a wonderful place to enjoy nature. It is a combination of the tropics with a landscape more characteristic of New Zealand or Scotland. There are hedgerows separating hilly cow pastures, lighthouses, steep cliffs, rocky beaches with 28C water and friendly, wonderful, honest and hardworking people.
The hotel is on the outskirts of the main city and has very basic rooms with air conditioning, plug type water heater, cable TV. It is right beside the beach, but be cautious about swimming as the waves and currents are quite strong. If you want to swim, it is advised to swim with a local. You will have insect visitors like ants and spiders, but that is expected of a resort beside a nature reserve (they shun pesticides).
You have a wonderful sea view and can let the roar of waves put you to sleep.

The staff are very friendly and honest and give you the feeling of being in someone's home. Don't count on them though to be really fast since they function as front desk, cleaning ladies and cooks depending on the time of the day. The men might also be your driver and tourist guide since they are hard working people who always want to be busy and feel really uncomfortable doing nothing. Our driver wakes up at 4AM and takes his cattle out to pasture before coming to work, takes part of lunch time to move them to another pasture and let them drink and takes them back home after his day ends at 5PM.

The food is very basic Filipino food for breakfast with little variety: garlic fried rice with fried egg, and either hot dogs, corned beef, beef tapa, or tocino. There's not much choice for lunch or dinner fare although their pancit (fried noodles) is quite good as is their fish lumpia (fish egg rolls). We ordered delivery pizza which was okay.
The manager owns a restaurant in town with much better food, but you'll need to walk about 7 minutes into town. Even there if you want a western breakfast, toast bread is hard to find as are jams and bacon. However you can order their specialty coconut crab as well as, lobsters, rock snapper and flying fish which are fresh and excellent.
Gas is expensive by Philippine standards, but because of low wages, you can rent vehicles at a very reasonable rate. You can also rent bicycles for P30 an hour or P400 a day. Be sure to check on the brakes and make sure its got many gears because some of the roads are steep and rise up 500 feet. I wasn't happy with their best bike, so next time I'll bring my own bike even if it costs me P3200 to do it.

You also won't find a diet softdrink anywhere on the island despite the many Coke Zero signs. The brewed coffee is also pretty lousy, so I'm glad I brought my own. You'll have to get San Mig or Nescafe 3 in 1 both a problem if you're diabetic. I don't think there are too many diabetics here since they are mostly thin and work hard.

I found the place quite spartan, but checking out the other places, Seaside was much better. Fundacion Pacita about 20 minutes away in the lonely hillside is better, but much more expensive and inconvenient.

Beautiful, beautiful Batanes! That's all I can say. It's quite costly to go on a trip to Batanes Province, but worth it, the place will really enchant you. As for the lodging, no it wouldn't. Don't expect much, just the basic. It's clean, for one. Food is average, service is average to poor. Piece of advice, when planning Batanes, make sure to get a good tour and it will all be worth it. We got the Batanes Photo Safari Tour of Mandy Navasero and it was just superb. And thanks also to our Ibatan guide, Rogers, you're awesome!

We travelled in a BIG group, around 29 of us. Good thing i was hosted in this hotel coz my other friends were hosted in Seaside Annex. Our place is lot bigger and more modern in facilities. There's a beach at the back of our hotel, we took a dip a couple of times :) When staying in Basco, try to book at Seaside Lodge, affordable and serene :)

Beautiful Batanes was at the top of my bucket list and this hotel made our visit really special. The staff here is very friendly and helpful even before we arrived in Batanes. We contacted the hotel in advance to inquire about tours and sightseeing and they were very prompt in their response and providing detailed information. Our trip was fantastic thanks to the hotel staff and our tour guide Mik, who showed us the entire island and a boating adventure to Sabtang island during our 3 days of sightseeing. The food at the hotel was really delicious and perfectly prepared. This hotel is older and well managed, full of charm and the staff is some of the best I’ve met during all my travels throughout the Philippines. I will definitely return to Batanes Seaside Lodge

Aside from terrible food served during breakfast, there was one incident when they weren't able to serve breakfast at all!!! I happen to be stranded during the Typhoon Dodong and there was a couple who said they were running out of funds and asked if breakfast would be complimentary, since this so-called hotel doesn't provide free breakfast. While I understand that it was their policy, we would have appreciated if they would have given it to the couple for humanitarian reasons. But instead of doing that, their receptionist named Sheng shut the person out and turned her back. That was really rude! I hope that she won't experience the same misfortunate circumstance that the couple had. Good thing Batanes Travel and Tours offered to shoulder the couple's breakfast.

Their rooms are kinda small too and not that clean. You have to call them everyday to have the room cleaned. I think it is imperrative that unless you tell them not to get into your room, cleaning should be automatic.

Batanes would have been better if their service providers can cater to their clients' needs.

Before going to Batanes, I've read up on hotel and resort reviews in the Internet. Based on what I found (including reviews from this site), my friends and I decided our best bet was either Batanes Resort or Batanes Seaside Lodge.

Since we all couldn't agree where to stay, we opted to stay at both hotels for 2 days each. Our stay in Batanes Resort was an unexpected pleasure (I have also posted a review) so we were excited when it was time to move to Batanes Seaside Lodge. When we got there, however, we were disappointed.

First, the room assigned to us was beside the reception area. So when we open our door, everybody at their lobby/reception could see right through our room. Second, no seaside view. I found out later that most of the rooms don't have this. You can only view the seaside if you choose 1 of the 2 tables outside their cafe/restaurant or when you go to their rooftop. Even then, the coconut trees blocks most of the views. Third, the windows to our room was facing the street and it wasn't soundproof. Even when it was closed we could hear everything; jeepneys, motorcycles, people walking, the receptionist scolding the guard/gardener.

The room itself is typical budget rooms; 3 single beds with thin mattress, 1 measly pillow and super thin blanket; a small TV (limited cable channels but good reception), tiny CR and 1 chair.Their cafe/restaurant is low key; reasonably priced (breakfast of tapsilog cost about P120) but has limited food choice.

The advantages of being at this hotel is that it is relatively near the town center (about 10 minute walk) and has WIFI. But my friends and I decided only after 1 day of staying at this hotel to move back to Batanes Resort.

If you are looking for a cheap, no fuss, decent hotel near the town center, Batanes Seaside Lodge maybe for you. But for my money, I would rather stay the night at Batanes Resort.

If you are going to Batanes, go the magnificent scenery and landscapes but be prepared for inconveniences such as brown outs, poorly maintained washroom facilities at public attractions and very basic or substandard accommodation (save for paying a small ransom for rooms at Fundacion Pacita). Although the raw materials for food are fresh e.g. meat and seafood, the locals have yet have to learn to cook for the palates of tourists and outsiders. The residents of the Batanes are friendly and warm.

COMMENTS ON BATANES SEASIDE LODGE which is
basically a bare bones bread and breakfast facility.

My mother's room (first room on the left as you come into the hotel)
-Window frame and door frame are badly eaten by termites.
-As the room faces the front road and the bar opposite, it tends to be noisy late into the night, suggest some sound proofing.
-Toilet seat was also loose and shaky but never fixed.

My room number 5
-Toilet seat wasi broken but staff does not bother to fix it.
-TV shelf was white but was grubby and visibly very dirty and full of thick dust. I had to clean and disinfect it with Dettol on my own.
-No blanket was provided until I asked for one.

Serving Table
-On serving tabels - no pepper or salt shakers were available until we asked for them. When we first asked for pepper the staff took the supply from their cooking kitchen and put it into little saucer for us.
-Staff here are generally very young and polite but do not have initiative and will only move when prodded or asked. They have to be asked for basically everything. This is a major problem.
-One morning when the three of us were seated for breakfast, we asked for two fried eggs each. When it arrived it came as six fried egges stacked on top of each other on a single plate. We then had to ask for separate plates each and then also had to asked for forks and knives.
-We asked for fresh milk and they did not have any and had to go out and buy packed milk which was fine. Come on this was high season, shouldn't they be adequately stocked.
-I guess butter was not available and we had to contend with some form of margarine.

Other Remarks
-Hot water heater...goes on and off... suddenly bathing with hot water and then suddenly it turns cold...thermostat controller is faulty.
-Water pressure is also poor and irregular. They should invest in a water pump so that water pressure from their holding tank (I presume they have one) is maintained.
-On my departure I wanted to have shower before leaving for airport. Thank goodness I had not applied soap to my body before, the water supply just suddenly stopped.
-Security is poor as room keys are often left unattended on the reception desk. At Shenadel's (we went there twice) which is a really small hotel, we spotted at least one security guard, sometimes two stationed at the access to the rooms.
-Back of house approach to the beach is littered with rubbish, fish bones and bits of food here and there and cats running all over the place. This is very disgraceful.
-Flies during meal times and breakfast time - I guess there is no need to explain why the flies are there?
-We went down the road to Shenadel's Inn on our last day 1 May 2013 and my cousin and I had a great breakfast for two and this totalled 160 pesos only and the service was so much better than Batanes Seaside Lodge (which charged 300 pesos per person) as it appears that the boss lady there takes a personal interest herself.
-On one of the mornings, there was a brownout and I made this known to the staff and asked them to turn on their backup generator to which they replied that this was not possible since their person in charge of the generator was on leave. This is high season and he goes on leave?
-Many of the other guests at the hotel also have similar complaints but I guess they are polite Filipinos who do not complain. There were some guests who mentioned that had they known about Batanes conditions and the hotel we/they were in, they would not have come.

CUISINE / FOOD & BEVERAGE
During on our stay, we had good meals at the following venues all outside our hotel:-

Shenadel's Inn (one dinner and one breakfast)
Fundacion Pacita (one dinner and one lunch)
Lighthouse Bunker (one dinner)
Casa Napoli (pizza - for two meriendas)

Otherwise the other meals at other places were awful.

I stayed here for 4 days in December 2010. I was very fortunate to have mostly sunshine weather and short-lived drizzles. The room I stayed in had 2 beds, a TV, a refrigerator, a window-box AC (which I didn't need to use) and a bathroom (shower, toilet, basin) - all kept very clean. The manageress/owner has a restaurant in town where I often went for lunch and dinner. She was very helpful. My travel agent had arranged all sight-seeing tours with the Lodge in advance. All I had to do was show up. I was picked-up from the airport and the resort also delivered me to Fundacion Pacita for the last part of my stay.
There was a water dispenser in the diningroom and I could re-fill my water bottle at any time.
The breakfast fare is pretty standard. The menu is limited, but sufficient to stave off hunger pains.
I liked that this lodge was on the edge of town away from the other new resorts jumping up in Basco.
As a single woman, I felt safe at the resort and while hiking the island.

The place is not in town center but along the highway and you can easily reach the town center in a 10 minutes. The back of the hotel is facing the ocean, and sounds of the wave splashing will lull you to sleep.
Although the staff sincerely wish to attend to the needs of their guests, expect them to be a bit slow in attending to your needs. As one reviewer mentioned, they seem to multi-task, eg driver, mechanic if one of their vans break down, & tour guide. The ladies can both be a receptionist and housekeeping staff.
Although breakfast comes free with the room rates, the menu is not for one who is health conscious. Their choices are mostly fried and does not come with fruits. If you want one, you have to buy them from some stores which are walking distance from this resort. One day we asked for fish & the kitchen staff that they ran out of fish, but when we walked to the town center, we saw several stalls selling fresh and grilled fish. We had to order what the kitchen served because the food came with the package we took.

You also have to remind the staff to switch on the water valve from their tanks, esp in the morning. The heater seems to be triggered by the strength of the water coming from the shower, and if there was no pressure the heater would not work.

Since it was also cold during our visit, we requested for a warm blanket, but said it was not available and gave us another thin bedsheet to keep us warm while sleeping.

If you want to make the most of your stay in Batanes, these shortcomings can easily be ignored when you experience the warm nature of the people and the beauty of the place.

Just enjoy the beauty you experience during your visit to Batanes

If you are looking for an accommodation in Batanes, I highly recommend Batanes Seaside Lodge. The lodge is located just 10 minutes away from the airport, and close proximity to restaurants and market. It has an awesome ocean view from the rooms and dining area. All rooms are newly renovated so they're impeccable, restrooms are new with hot water, and air conditioning is strong. Beddings are clean and towels are freshly provided daily. Keep in mind that this is a lodge, not a hotel, so the rooms do not have a kitchen, refrigerator, or phones. Payments are cash only.
Don't miss having lunch and/or dinner at Casa Napoli (home made thin pizza crust, very tasty & crunchy), Pension Ivatan (delicious okoy) and Octagon located just beside the lodge (fresh shrimps). Lobster dinner at Batanes Seaside was delectable, it was cooked with garlic butter.

The 5-Star service we received from the staff made this lodge unique and highly commendable. They'll attend to your requests quickly, and will come out of their way to please their guests. They often asked if we need anything to make our stay comfortable. Breakfast service was quick, critical if you are catching a ferry to Sabtang island or leaving to take the flight back to Manila. They also arranged and packed our order for day old flying fish which is very popular in Batanes. Weng, the manager and her staff (Pops, Kathleen & Liezl) gave us a warm send off with a big smile. I'd come and stay at the Batanes Seaside Lodge again. I feel safe, comfortable, and well taken care of. Thank you to all the staff who made our stay in Batanes fun and memorable!
