First, I should thank the hotel staff. As you might know, it is tough for solo travelers to book a Ryokan room. As a search around the hotel list, which I think is perfect for the stay, Fuji Ginkei is one of a few hotels which said OK. I appreciate it.
The location is perfect as you can see the lake and mountain simultaneously. For Kawaguchiko, only a few hotels have this kind of view.
When you arrive at the Kawaguchiko station, don't forget to call them, and they will pick you up. However, when you live, if you want to take their shuttle bus, you need to check their shuttle bus schedule.
I choose the Japanese-style room which a balcony since I want to take many photos from my room. It is worth it as the view from the room is perfect. I can stay in the room and watch Mount Fuji all afternoon. It even has an individual bathroom in the room, which is kind of rare. If you stay in the hotel in Winter, don't forget to use the outdoor onsen. It will be freezing to get in and out, but it is worth it as you will see a very clear sky and many stars when using the outdoor onsen. You will never forget it. Moreover, don't forget to go lakeside, which is only a few meters away. You can take perfect photos of the lake, Mount Fuji and the stars. It is impressive.
Service is as good as before, which you can imagine. When you are having breakfast and dinner, the staff will talk with you, introducing the dish and telling you much exciting and helpful information. For once, I was discussing さかさふじ with them and really learned a lot.
The dish is good. As I stayed for two nights, I think the first night's dinner was better than the second. For breakfast, I don't have too many things to say. Overall, the dish tasted good but not as impressive as in 2017, maybe because I tried some Michelin during these years, which increased my standard.
Overall, it is an excellent hotel, and the price is not that high compared to other hotels around Kawaguchiko. Once again, is it worthy.
The ryokan was right in front of the lake facing Mount Fuji. The view of my room was spectacular. The room was newly renovated. The outdoor onsen on the roof top has a gorgeous view too.
The meal was delicious and abundant.
However, the lighting in the washroom was annoying. It’s monitored by sensors and there’s no switch. It’s on or off out of control.
My stay there was memorable in general.
The common areas of the hotel were well maintained however our bedroom was very tired, had a musty smell despite leaving the air conditioner on all day and the linen and towels were in a very poor condition. This hotel was not cheap but the bathroom is what I would expect in a run down B&B. An investment is needed to bring the accommodation in line with the service provided by the staff.
The breakfast and dinner we had were REALLY delicious and beautifully presented. The staff e-mails you prior to your arrival confirming your dietary restrictions if any, specifically if you eat, raw fish/meat and pork and accommodate accordingly.
There is a shuttle that picks you up from the bus station upon arrival and also takes in you in to town during your stay.
The Hot springs and sauna were great. The view from the the outdoor hotsprings was amazing , you could stay there all day.
A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER
The resort is quite traditional and with that comes a few limitations so be prepared before you book
- There is a set time for breakfast and dinner . You have the option for a 7:30 AM or 8 AM breakfast and 6:30 or 7 PM dinner. So if you like to sleep in or have a late dinner keep in mind this will not be an option here
- You have to be out of your room by 10:30 AM in the morning for cleaning. - Again if you plan on staying in and relaxing keep this in mind.
My boyfriend and I found the time limitations a bit restrictive as we were looking forward to relaxing few days and didn't expect to be on a schedule.
-The spa/hot springs area is separate for men and women. - I know this is standard for Japanese spas but didn't realize at the time of booking. I think it takes away from the romantic atmosphere of the place just a bit.
- They do not accept Credit Cards . Any extra purchases including alcohol, or a massages can be billed to the room but must be paid in cash
- We stayed on the 3 rd floor and internet was AWFUL! Don't know if they were having issues or this is the standard but the people in the room next to us switched rooms because they were having internet problems.
- The " Japanese Bed" is basically blankets layed on the floor which feels a bit too firm when sleeping. We expected this but keep in mind when booking.
Overall a very nice stay that gives you a sense of a traditional japanese culture in a beautiful setting. I cant say that i was blown away but it was definitely and unique and interesting experience.
Hotel provides a pickup from the station which is typical of most hotels in this area. Since we were only staying 1 night and had to leave in the morning we doubted if we could have breakfast and go to the station on time. Fear not! They have already thought about everything for us. They gave us 3 breakfast times and 3 drop off times and that was all sorted within 5 minutes.
We had booked the traditional style room and it had a bath that uses the spring water so you can soak. However, you must go to the open air onsen where you can see Fujisan while soaking. Again, typical of most onsens, vending machines with milk available for after your soak or free water is also available.
You can also rent a fancier Yukata to wear around the resort if you want something more than the plain robes they provide.
Dinner was Japanese Kaiseki (multiple courses) and I've dined in Michelin starred restaurants before that cannot stand up to the service and quality of food they have here. It was just sublime- oh and we got seats that were in front of the window but 2 of our party had to sit with their back facing the window. However at dinner it gets dark so it wouldn't matter much if you sat facing it or not. Food was amazing- can stand up to the top restaurants and then some. When we returned to our rooms, the futons were already set up for us.
Different story at breakfast though- this is the bit we were blown away by. They set up our tables all facing Fujisan at the window. Not only that- they noticed that one member of our party was left handed and set up her table to accommodate her! That is the amount of attention to detail they placed into looking after us. We were very touched by it. BLOWN AWAY. Breakfast was also multiple courses and again- oishii.
After breakfast the ride to the station was ready at EXACTLY the time required (Japanese efficiency). Staff was great but that is standard in Japan.
I can honestly say I have paid more money and "fancy" restaurants and luxury hotels that cannot hold a candle to this place. Impressed to the next level!!!
We did not ask them for a room change as I did not want this to ruin our stay.
The staff was very polite and showed us our room when we arrived - great change from what we experience in North America but then it's like that everywhere in Japan.
They offer free shuttle service from kawaguchiko station but only as of 3pm.
The kaiseki dinner was delicious but I had wished the staff was more quiet in the background. We could always here them scrambling here and there to get things done. Not the most peaceful environment really...
I also wished they'd explain what each item was. Being from North America, it's not always obvious what all dishes are. Instead we were bombarded on and on with small dishes. Most we're very tasty and flavorful. Not sure I would want to eat another kaiseki dinner there though.
The breakfast was better. It was very filling but not too filling to start the day.
The onsen bath is very relaxnh and has a beautiful view of mt fuji. They have an indoor and outdoor bath. I preferred the outdoor one.
Our room was very clean and the tatami was very comfortable at night to sleep.
Overall, I would not stay here again. We went to this hotel to have a nice view of mt fuji and was deceived. The kaiseki meals somewhat made up for it but not enough for us to go back. We stayed at another hotel the next day and had a better view of mt fuji (full view instead of half being of balconies) and at 1/2 the price - however did not include meals.
Wifi was available in the lobby and in the rooms.
Also, I'm unsure why this is under "ryokan." To me it is more of a "hotel" unless the other establishments on that street are also "ryokans" which I believe they are not...so don't be fooled by the fact that this is under "ryokan."
Since we knew to stay only two nights in one ryokan (this varies by region - Kurokawa ryokans had three days of different menus), when we moved to another ryokan in Kawaguchiko after our stay in Fujiginkei, they kindly delivered our luggage after check out to our next accommodation so we could sightsee the Fiji Five Lakes Area unencumbered.
Our room had a wonderful view of Fujisan. The best view is actually from the outdoor pools in the onsens located on the top floor. The dining room also has a great view of Fuji.
We have stayed in more than 11 different ryokans in Japan. Fujiginkei had some of the best quality and quantity in terms of their included meals (kaiseki breakfasts and 12 courses kaiseki dinners). They took into account our food requests and served scrumptious and atheistically beautiful dishes one after another. Portions were more than adequate - we are big eaters and we were stuffed!
Pickup from the bus station was easy - we asked the TI to call Fujiginkei at 2:25 pm and they came promptly in about 10 minutes. The hotel is located on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko - directly facing Mount Fuji so ask for an upper floor room for the best views. They run scheduled shuttles to and from the bus station as well as to a few of the popular tourist sights.
Meals are served in a common dining room, something we actually prefer versus in-room dining since the courses are served more promptly and the food is hotter. Each table had enough privacy so it felt as if we were in our own private dining room (it may have been due to the fact that we had a great lakeside end table as our designated table for both stays). Drinks (sake and beers) are reasonable and icy cold!
The onsens are rather small - one indoor and one outdoor pool each for men and women. No sauna or low temperature pools. But the areas were very clean and the water was crystal clear. Toiletries and amenities in the onsens were many and varied. They even provided callus lotion as well as a foot scrub! You do need to take the large and small towels from your room to the onsens. You choose your yukatas from the reception area. As mentioned before, the outdoor pools have the best views (of Fujisan in this case) of any ryokan we have stayed!
Overall, we think that this stay was very good in value and experience! We will come back here again the next time we come to Kawaguchiko - in a different season to see Fujisan snow capped and eat a different season of kaiseki meals!
