We stayed at the cabin for 3 nights and I can only wish it were a week. The owners were amazing, incredibly friendly and the property, the lodging and all of the special spaces from the library to the river-side spa hut were just surprise on top of surprise. The pool area - wow. That was just a shock, I had no idea it would be so beautiful. I definitely will come back and loved every minute. My morning runs were perfection and dinners in our little house were perfect, although I wished we had done fullboard and eaten every night at the pool. I could say more, it was just fabulous.

As tour operators we visit the properties that we recommend so that we know first hand what sort of experience our guests can expect. Olepangi is a beautiful property with a great manager, but unfortunately we found the culinary experience at Olepangi farm to be wanting. The first lunch started out well, but it was then downhill from there. We are vegetarians and we were very disappointed at the options they have for vegetarians. On the first night, we were served a spinach quiche with a spinach dish on the side plus some boiled vegetables. To have two spinach dishes in one meal is something that we have never experienced before and it definitely did not leave a good impression. To continue further, for breakfast, apart from the normal baked beans, potatoes and eggless pancakes, there was not other egg-free options made available (even though we had specifically put this request when making the booking). We were not offered any cereals at breakfast, so not sure if they keep any cereal? On the second day, for lunch we were just given a very simple vegetable fried rice as our main meal (a dish which would normally be an accompaniment to something else). We discussed the above with the chef, but there did not seem to be any creativity or proactiveness on his part to try and improve on the meals. He told us that he has trained in French cuisine, so we are not sure if this was the reason that he did not really know what to make for vegeterians? We were again disappointed there was no creativity especially as this is a working farm which has lots of amazing vegetables and fruits being grown organically, and from other reviews that we have read, we were expecting some great meals. Our final dinner was basically mashed potatoes with some cabbage stir fry. The non-vegetarian guests (who were at the table next to us) were give mashed potato, stir fried cabbage and meat. The chef decided that the vegetarian guests (3 of us) did not require anything to substitute the meat. My mother had asked the chef to make some paneer as he said he had some, but this dish (it was quite a small portion - not even enough for one person) was also not made well and seemed to be made as an afterthought using the same sauce that the cabbage had been stir fried in. We feel that the property mainly caters for non-vegetarians for the moment and really needs to improve their vegetarian offerings.

Second time I am visiting this year and the experience has been wonderful, both times. The environment is great for a weekend away with friends celebrating life. There is lots to do (hike, yoga, swim, milk cows, ride horses, massage) and places to hide not doing anything but enjoying nature, bird watching, and listening to the sound of the river. The host, Elizabeth is gracious as always, interacting with guests at regular intervals, but giving you space to enjoy your visit as you please. Thomas and the team are also a very friendly and helpful team, responsive and careful to call each guest by name. That's a nice touch! The team needs to work on their speed and coordination in setting up for special events, and perhaps widen and diversify the buffet menu a little, but otherwise the food is wholesome (they have a well maintained kitchen and flower garden) and simply but tastefully prepared. It gets very cold at night here, but the log fires and hot water bottles they provide are a specially welcome touch to make sure you are comfortable.

Olepangi Farm exceeded our expectations. We had an excellent couple of nights staying in the Round House, a very cute mini cottage on 2 levels; the sitting room with dining table area and veranda is downstairs, upstairs there is the bedroom and en-suite and another mini balcony. It’s very comfortable, clean and I really liked the quirkiness of it. Dinner and sundowners are in ‘the Pool House’, a super communal area with bar, seating areas, fire place and pool with sun loungers. It had such a chilled out and relaxed vibe. The decor and design of the buildings all flow really well together and you can’t help but feel your cares melt away. The food was exceptional and wine and beer was reasonably priced. The sundowner nibbles were very tasty too. I believe the general rule is no children (certainly young ones) so it was lovely and peaceful with adults unwinding without having excitable children running about. The setting is on a hillside looking onto Ole Naishu conservancy and overlooking a small stream- very pretty. The staff were attentive, but not too much, making it all very pleasant and enjoyable. The manager met us on arrival and explained everything; he was really good. And Elizabeth, the owner, made a point of welcoming guests throughout the stay and ensuring everything was going well. There are options to horse ride, go walking or have a massage at a small extra cost. So serene but only 40 mins from busy Nanyuki. We’d definitely recommend.
