I stayed in Fumonin to be honest it was quite an average experience. If you have never stayed in a traditional type set up this may be a great experience but for a seasoned traveler this was pretty average.

Difficult to comment since we only stayed at Fumon-in but it looks as though they are very different in size: Fumon-in has only 5 rooms and also possibly in rooms: we had a large Western style room with private loo but baths were shared (separate male/female) onsen. All temples invite you to join morning service which at Fumon-in was 35-40 minutes; I heard that some were 90 minutes!
