I have stayed at battlesteads on a number of occasions and had a great time, but after reading story in press about hard working staff being paid less than the minimum wage, I won’t be back. The staff make the hotel the place it is and have always been polite hardworking and helpful. Owner...hang your head in shame.

We are disappointed to read you will not be returning to stay with us. As mentioned in our below statement the under payments were unintentional and our staff understood this at the time of the investigation in 2017. This is why you will have experienced the same team of staff throughout your many visits. Our helpful, hard working and loyal staff are at the heart of everything we have built up over the last 15 years. We will not and have not, ever done anything to intentionally undermine fair working conditions for our staff. Press statement In 2017 the business was contacted by the NMW enforcement team to undertake a random spot check. During this investigation the NMW enforcement team decided that certain workers differed from the contractual terms we had employed them under. We classed these workers annual salaried, to ensure our seasonal business did not affect their income throughout the year. Whereas the NMW enforcement team classed them as timed workers. At no point had we intentionally made any under payments to our employees. Therefore we accepted the outcome of the investigation without appeal. Immediately made the necessary payments to our employees, amended our employment contracts and paid the associated fines to HMRC.

Wanted to have a meal with family before the next lockdown. We were on two separate tables socially distanced apart so we weren’t breaking rules but could easily talk to each other. Meal was pleasant. We had starters which were okay but our mains were lovely. Three of us had the chicken Kiev which was very tasty and fourth meal was a spicy chicken dish. What was nice was they gave us a complimentary tiny cup of cauliflower soup. That was gorgeous. Would make a superb starter. Would eat here again, as I thought it was much better than a Sunday meal we’ve had here previously. Very COVID-19 safe practices

We had a great 3 nights at Battlesteads in one of the luxury lodges with our 3 dogs. The location is great, food really good and the beer is great! Lots of choice for vegetarians although having to preorder a vegetarian breakfast the day before does seem a bit of a throwback. The place is very very dog friendly and all the staff made us and the dogs feel really welcome. We are definitely coming back!

We enjoyed an overnight stay in Lodge 18 at the weekend. This lovely hotel is well located for exploring Northumberland. The lodge rooms are located to the rear and side of the hotel. There is car parking right outside. The room was perfectly clean with huge bedroom and living area. The large bathroom has a jacuzzi tub and walk in shower. I loved the quality of the bath products, the complimentary homemade biscuits and the fruit plate. Parking is free . Free wifi. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the quality of food and service is great. Breakfast was perfect with a good choice. Highly recommended

Room clean, hydro bath was appreciated after a long day out. Fruit bowl on arrival and gorgeous home made biscuits. Staff were polite extremely helpful at all times. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was superb. We are planning to return as we could find no faults and had an amazing stay. Good location for visiting surrounding areas.
