This is as rustic as rustic gets. An absolute gem of a country village hotel. I was travelling from Merida to the ferry port in Santander. The hotel is barely an hours drive from Santander and is an ideal stopover prior to catching the ferry next day. Although I should have been accommpanied, cicumstances dictated that I was on my own and was most surprised to be the only guest at this delightful establishment. Yes, the food is simple but nevertheless very good. It is served in a charming restaurant,the room on the right of the photograph. For €21 I had a three course meal which included a bottle of young but very drinkable Rioja. Breakfast was a feast in itself, I was not able to devour everything but left the hotel totally satisfied. I would certainly recommend this establishment to friends. English is widely spoken.

A very tastefully restored country house, in a tiny hamlet a few miles out of Reinosa. An ideal distance from Bilbao or Santander for a first night after arriving by ferry.
The scenery is lovely, and the small ski resort of Alto Campo is about 11-12 km up the road.
The only down side is that there is no alternative restaurant within walking distance of the hotel. The hotel restaurant is very good, but not particularly cheap, and little choice (though the staff would probably have been willing to rustle up an omelette or salad on request as an alternative).

Very quiet setting, in a shopless hamlet off a road leading to a ski resort. We stayed here as an overnight stop on our trip from near coast, through Picos to Burgos. Nice view out the back garden to the distant Picos. We stayed one night in summer. I think we were the only people there. Sat in the garden watching a lovely sunset over the hills. Rooms are all different, beautiful dark wood flooring, furniture and staircases, spacious room and bathroom, nice finishing touches all over. Staff very friendly. We ate at hotel restaurant because to go elsewhere would have been a drive, and food was ok but not special and in fact rather expensive. A menu-del-dia type of evening meal for 21 euros each, which in a town cafe I would expect to be 12 euros. Local sights of source of Ebro at Fontibre, and peculiar church at Cervatos are worth seeing.
