The first things you notice is that the hotel is a quite run down. The carpets are stained and the walls could use a new layer of paint. Furthermore, the rooms are typical Tokyo-sized. This basically means you have just enough room the put a bed in it. You do get a private bathroom. The hotel itself offers very few amenities: there are some vending machines right outside(!) the entrance and that's it. If you can get over the problems, you do get a room at an unbeatable price. Reservation via their English website is quick and painless.

Besides the price, the location is quite good, too. You're within walking distance or a single subway stop from Ueno station, from which you can easily explore Tokyo (or use the Skyliner to/from Narita airport).

The staff speaks little English, but you'll only rarely need them, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Overall, if you're on a budget and want a room with a private bathroom, this is probably one of the few places in Tokyo. For the rest, you should probably look elsewhere. Note the company has several other hotels in Tokyo, which may or may not be better than this one.

The first thing I noticed was that the lobby was filled with the cigarette smoke. I selected a non-smoking room but I doubt that the room was designated as a non-smoking room. The ventilation seem to be connected from room to room; the room smelled like ashtray. I opened the window (I could only open a bit since there was a nail blocking from opening all the way) then the room was breathable in an hour or so. I only stayed at this hotel one night. If you are not sensitive to cigarette smoke, this hotel may be acceptable. But I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke and I do not recommend to anyone who is sensitive to cigarette smoke. I only paid $40 a night and It was worth exactly that.

The staff here speaks only Japanese, so make sure that at least one person in your group is semi fluent! They are quite strict and most aren't very friendly, but they're not rude either. The noise level is very nice, mostly quiet aside from the occasional drunken business man stumbling in at night. The rooms are fine, tidied up every day whether you want them to be or not, which can be inconvenient. It's mandatory you're not in your room between certain times so they can clean it. It was great to have the bathroom with deep soaker tubs connected to the bedroom. I would've rated it a 3, but the toilet/bath connected to the room bumps it to a 4 for me! If my Japanese improves, I'll stay here again. If not, I'll have to pass as they are not very accommodating with non Japanese speakers!
