It was a five-day getaway in Cebu and Bohol with my former student when we stayed for 3 days and 2 nights in Open Doors Haven. There are numerous accommodations available near Tagbilaran Seaport in Bohol, Philippines, but I chose this property because of its high sounding name. Despite the fact that the pictures in the website weren't convincing, I made the booking even though I had doubts about its name and the lofty reviews online. To be very honest, it was an uncomfortable stay. If you are extremely on a budget, you may try, inasmuch as the owner Ms. Doris and her staff are nice and very welcoming hosts. However, it would be more beneficial if you look for some other options of the same price or a little bit higher with better and more decent facilities. The toilet next to our room had a notice on the door stating "this comfort room is under on hold renovation; however, you can freely use it if needed." What comfort could this toilet provide if the flooring smells like fish being cleaned. The linoleum floor covering in our room looked scruffy and untidy. See for yourself if you would prefer to stay in this apparently very old lodging. Nevertheless, it is quite accessible from the port and commercial area. Thank you for welcoming us, Ms. Doris. My sincere apologies however, but I strongly believe that your old shabby property requires total renovations for it to be worthy of being internationally advertised in websites. You could then display a big and noticeable signboard by the gate, unlike the tiny one. Good accommodations will reflect a more beautiful image of the Philippines 🇵🇭.

I had the pleasure of staying at Open Doors Haven for one week and I can't recommend this hostel enough! It is a small family-run business and a perfect example of filipino hospitality. The family are some of the most wonderful people I got to meet and they made my week in Bohol one of the highlights of my month-long trip through the Philippines. Besides being treated like family from the moment you arrive, Open Doors also offers budget-friendly accommodations (private or twin rooms) with AC or fans, breakfast, filtered hot and cold water available 24/7, patio with tables and chairs for relaxing, motorbikes to rent, and a fantastic location within walking distance to everything in Tagbilaran City and very convenient to the airport and seaport. The location is also a great for day-trips to Panglao island, river cruises, Tarsier Sanctuary, Chocolate Hills, etc. Thank you for an amazing stay!

We arrived around 4pm and checked straight in. We payed 1400 peso for 2 nights for a room with great air con and the WiFi was some of the best we have had in Asia. The rooms are slightly dated, furniture is old and the bathrooms could do with being renovated but if you’re not a snob it’s perfectly adequate. The family that run this place are so helpful and friendly. On one of the days it was particularly hot so they offered us free Biko juice. The next day the island went into blackout, the have solar panels for these days and when this runs out they use their car battery to power the house. Due to the blackout we couldn’t withdraw money or exchange any money and didn’t have enough to get the boat so the lady took our £10 from us and exchanged it for peso at a good rate.

The family that run the place are some of the kindest and most friendly people I've ever met, they got out of their way to ensure you have an enjoyable time in Bohol. On our last day the whole island suffered a blackout so they could have easily said sorry we have no electricity, instead they left their car running all day and connected it to a power supply to ensure all the guests had electricity! The same day we were unable to withdraw any cash as all the ATMs were unusable, the family lent us money to ensure we were able to still afford to do what we had planned. Location wise we were able to walk from the ferry port which was highly convenient, also they arranged motorbike rental for 350, enabling you to ride to the Chocolate Hills. Overall we had a very pleasant stay with the family, rooms we well sized the only improvement they could make is to their bathrooms however if you want a budget stay this place is perfect.
