This is a very basic hotel. The room is very simple - there was a safe which was fine. There was only one toilet roll provided and also no towels, the a/c is quite loud, there are no toiletries provided in the room like shower gels etc, and no mini Bar. There was seating outside the room which was nice and the garden area is kept nice too. But it is very very loud, the location is great as it’s a few minutes walk down to the beach and you are close to many restaurants and bars but it’s very loud ! So hard to get much sleep! I didn’t really spend much time in the hotel at all as I was out on day trips which is good. But Alona beach is great so be sure to spend some time there! The vibe is so different at
daytime compared to evening but it’s a really nice beach with gorgeous clear water! I had breakfast at one of the restaurants on the beach one morning as it was a really lovely calm atmosphere. The hotels location is what makes it fab!

We couldn't find a better price for a place this close to the ocean. Very affordable and only a two minute walk to the sea. Clean room but there was a slight issue with noise outside from a bar or restaurant playing music as well as construction. For the price and great location, we enjoyed our stay.

Bottom Line: Book here! I did last year, again this year and will again.

Paragayo Resort is an oasis of quiet, professionalism amongst dusty, disorganized bustling streets that are typical of Asian resort towns. The deceptively small façade open up to a cool courtyard garden surrounded by the Units. The rooms spacious and clean, the bedding new, but towels getting a bit thin … which summarises this place: Very well run on a shoestring budget.

To me that’s makes PR the best value for money in the Philippines.

This was our second visit to Paragayo and as I wrote above, we would stay again. I wrote last year that the management standards were high – and I was again thrilled. I say “thrilled” because everything just worked. The staff listened, even anticipated our needs. Nothing was too much trouble or even needed higher “approval”. That’s the kind of five star service I have yet to receive in a five star hotel in the Philippines. (Don't over read this - they aren't butlers!)

But nothing is perfect. On the down side … it’s a 7 minute walk to the beach, which just makes it quiet except for the nearby nightclub that woke me at 4 am ( just once). No restaurant but the best breakfast option is a 24/7 restaurant (Alona Hidden Dream) about 25 metres away and others that are even closer.

They need to do a bit more basic maintenance – like replacing cracked tiles, but everything is clean. Even to the point where I left muddy wheel tracks from my luggage – the staff immediately returned to clean up my mess – thanks.

WiFi offered only in the garden and it works fine, even to the front half of our room.

Expect a genuine and warm welcome from the staff … but the UK owner/manager is more of a quiet achiever. Clearly the 5 star efficiency is driven by this gentleman.

Westerners will value the quiet efficiency of this resort and accept the rest as “value for money” Perhaps Filipino’s won’t notice the lack of incompetence and bemoan the lack of little bottles of shampoo. Horses for courses.

The owners are developing another property that seems more up market. Perhaps I’ll try that next time …

A Word on Bohol in General.

We were in Bohol in 2013 on the day of the earthquake, and again in October 2014. So I thought some observations would assist some readers.

As far as tourism is concerned all (or enough) is back to full operation: though signs of earthquake damage are all about. (for some, difficult to distinguish from the general decay). Enough of the roads are fixed, the town hall is of course fixed, but the Coral Churches sadly not. You can see the Tarsier, Chocolate Hills, River cruise and Bee Farm etc.

The people seem resilient but the economy seems a little sad. Its not so busy and for the first time there are children singing (badly) for pesos … thinly disguised begging. So I have concerns that the economic situation will drag down the public safety levels if the economy doesn’t pick up.

Bottom line: DO visit – now. They need the support of your tourism and you won’t be disappointed.

Paragayo is located a 5 minute walk above Alona beach. Which makes it quiet. Had quite a big room with fridge, comfy bed, TV, both AC and fan. Hot water and lots of space to put clothes and stuff. We also had our own little patio w chairs and table overlooking the garden.

Room is a but rundown but that's what can be expected in this price range I South East Asia. I liked that it was very clean though. Wifi does not work in room, only in lobby and their cozy garden. In the lobby they have a kettle for everyone to use.

Hotel helped us to book a van to transport us to the airport for 600 p.

By the way if you want good food in Alona, go to Giuseppe's an authentic Italian restaurant. Restaurants on the beach are of ridiculously poor quality and overpriced.

For the money you pay - this is a great little spot. Set up on the main road, just a short walk away from the beach. The room was basic, but clean, with a comfy bed, and air con (although our air-con unit was so noisy, I just couldn't sleep through it and had to turn off at night).

The only reason I'm not giving this a higher score is that where the hotel is situated is just super noisy. The clubs and bars seem to be open all night/morning and the heavy thud of baselines kept me up/woke me up, on more than a few occasions. If you're not a light sleeper like me, and you're on a budget, give it a go.

I don't know if this is because of my room location, or if there was a special event in the bars around the hotel but I spent a night there, and I was not able to sleep because of the bass sounds from some speakers around.
Otherwise this hotel is a clean and affordable option if you spend most of your nights partying outside !

Bottom Line: We will stay again … but not for a while. I experienced the best actual service here in the whole country - including two 5 star Hotels.

This whole area reminded me of parts of Bali - rough streets, tour touts every ten paces, and a myriad of outdoor restaurants. Oh and massages on the beach.

Accommodation is usually swamped by tiny backpacker establishments and thrust in the middle One huge ‘proper” overpriced hotel. Paragayo Garden resort fills the gap in between nicely.

Don’t let the location or entrance fool you. After the small reception the next door opens up to a pleasant garden with seating areas and rooms in batches of 4 or 5. The walk to the beach is easy enough 1 klm or so (see touts comment) and at worst take a Trike for 50 Peso.

We saw our first room, and decided we needed something larger. That was an easy fix for a few more pesos. In fact everything was an easy fix, like a power plug adapter, transport, late check out. I’ve had far more hassle with such typical requests at 5 star hotels. It makes a great change in any country but esp this one.

What first impressed me was the tidiness of the gardens and walkways. Compared to the streets it’s quite a contrast and a sign of good things to come.

The Rooms are best described as clean, basic, but needs some repairs … liked cracked shower tiles. While the cleanliness was first class the room cleaning staff are too short, and supervisors too shortsighted. Unlike the rest of the room anything over 5ft 10in high, eg the shelf above the wardrobe, sorely needs a dusting – I mean enough dust to write your name.

Open wardrobes, with plenty of hanging space – but only four hangers? Come on guys….

Laundry at realistic rates - at last!

It seems that they don’t take credit cards ( I could be wrong) and they wanted a tiny 500p (USD12) deposit) - not much but a bit silly really. Past problems with towels destroyed by guests who had those stupid henna tattoos, meant not only a warning but I had to sign a statement about paying for henna stained towels. I get it, but the whole thing was a bit too “school teacher” for me.

Our first morning there was the day of the October 2013 Earthquake. So it was a real test of the hotel. While the UK manager happily informed us that the generator would be available for periods of four hours and it was, it seems that that was the extent of the emergency plan. I saw no checking of guests, no rollcall and when I asked 7 hours later of our room had been checked for structural integrity the receptionist laughed at me loudly. Pretty pathetic - not that one should anything remotely resembling professionalism in the Philippines - but it would not be hard to do better. The staff themselves didn’t even rush outside or drop and cover. So there is a huge gap in their training and apparently no disaster plan in place.

Three days after the earthquake most of the scenic places were still closed off – and help had yet to reach remote areas. I was stunned by the difference between this country and the writer's. In my City, just days after a major flood the ‘Mud Army” of volunteers was out helping clean up the homes of strangers. In Bohol, locals lingered under tarpaulins but nothing was being cleaned up. Staff at a tourist spot just sat around telling people they were closed but leaving the T Shirts on the floor. There was no point volunteering to help – because no one was actually doing any work!

So will we be back? Yes, but not for a long time: it will take these laid back islanders a long time to get things back to standard. A pity because they will sorely need to Tourist dollars.

Great for those on a budget, set slightly back from Alona beach (its only a 5 minute walk away). Nice basic cottages and wifi that works in the garden area. The main downfall is the noise coming from the street outside as Helmuts bar opposite so loud music most nights and also main taxi area so lots of revving engines. Also the generator kicks in at 6am in the garden which woke us up. Quite noisy and the main reason we moved on elsewhere. Price-wise however its very reasonable and has a fridge in the room which is good.

The resort may not be located by the beach, but it gave us more oppprtunity to explore the place and indulge in the experience. Just outside the hotel, jeepneys pass by if you want to go to city proper or you can rent a motorcycle to go around. Across the street, there are bars and restaurants open til the wee hours of midnight. Beside the resort is a commercial building, lots of stores, bakery and convenience store around. You need to take a 5 minute walk to the beach, but that okay because there's a lot of other restaurants and bars to see along the way (more dining options). We availed of the hotels island hopping tour which went on smoothly, the guides were all kind and courteous. As for our room, we specifically requested for a quieter area because some rooms are located near the bars. Our room was spacious, the bed was comfy, there's cable TV. What I really liked about our room was the bathroom because it has a walk-in closet like area. I really like seeing our things organized and our bed was clutter free. Our room was cleaned daily, they resupply toiletries and provide fresh clean towels everytime.
