Finally, Ponden Mill is listed under Trip Advisor! This is a long overdue review as we stayed there in May and I cannot wait to tell everyone how fantastic this place is with Richard and Barbara as top hosts.
Husband-and-wife hosts Richard and Barbara Trainer made us feel so very welcome from the instant we stepped in. Barbara brewed a lovely hot pot of tea for us and when she found out we aimed to climb to Top Withens, gave us the best directions on the walking trail from Ponden Mill. The next morning, we woke to find she’d packed beef and onion sandwiches for us, and moments before we left, tucked a few packets of flapjacks she had baked, for us to chew on as she said we needed the energy. Food never tasted so good as when eaten at Top Withens! Richard even took time out of his busy schedule, driving us a short distance to a village where he said was the right spot to begin our trail. When we were late getting back, they told us they were worried and about to leave to ask about if anyone had seen us! These are very kind folks indeed.
What delicious homemade English breakfasts Barbara whipped up the next day! She made sure everyone had enough to eat, taking care of every detail, down to the perfect hard-boiled egg she served up in her personal favourite of a beautiful, intricate egg-cup. She even introduced us to all the in’s and out’s of her own kitchen, bidding us to eat whatever we wished at any time and brew whatever we wanted.
Nothing was too much of a stretch for them, and their warm affection for each other, evinced in their crisp banter, the husband brewing a cup of coffee for his wife and fumbling over the coffee-maker in the process, gave forth a warm, homely feel to our stay.
The room we shared with three adults was newly renovated and huge, with a four-poster double bed, and an additional rollaway which Richard specially installed at no extra cost. With an equally spacious ensuite bathroom, towels and all toilet amenities were immaculately arranged, spick and span, clean as a new pin. The view from our bedroom windows was that of the tinkling stream with placid ducks and fowl alike in the quiet summer. The clean state of the carpets as well, owing to a no-shoe policy once you ascend the stairs to the bedrooms, leaving them (the shoes) at the foot of the staircase. Wifi was free as well.
We learnt a lot about the surrounding British countryside and history of the famed Brontës from both Barbara and Richard. With memories of such warm, caring and infinitely hospitable hosts in the Trainers, we fervently recommend Ponden Mill to anyone and hope to visit again!
