We have just returned from an absolutely wonderful overnight stay at The Crown Inn. I stumbled across the Inn while looking for a quick weekend getaway and can honestly say I’m so very glad I found it! The Inn itself is absolutely stunning. Set in a pretty little village, it’s very welcoming. The main bar is small and cosy with a roaring open fire. We were greeted straight away by the friendly and helpful young man behind the bar.
Once we’d had a drink and settled ourselves in we were shown to our room - The Fotheringhay. Wow! What a gorgeous room. The heating was already on which was lovely as it was a very cold blustery day! The decor is simple yet elegant, and very homely. The bed was large and so comfortable, with some very plump pillows! The room had everything we required, tea/coffee making facilities, a fantastic range of teas, and fresh milk in the mini fridge. We were also provided with bottles of water which was a nice touch. Moving on to the bathroom and I think I fell in love! The bathroom is huge, with a lovely walk in shower and roll top bath. This totally swayed my decision on what room to chose! There was a lovely selection of toiletries laid out in the room for us and the towels were big and soft.
We booked the Dinner, Bed & Breakfast package so after we settled in we made our way back to the bar. We were told we could relax, have a drink (or two!) before we were shown to our table which was lovely. We felt totally relaxed and that there was no rush to get us to our table.
The menu was a very good size.. just the right amount to chose from. We opted for a pre-starter of Baked Brie with fresh bread and this was delicious! The bread was perfect! We followed it up with starters of the Goats Cheese & Beetroot Tart, and Crispy Chilli Beef. The tart was perfection on a plate. We both chose the Slow cooked Short Rib of Beef for a main, and this was equally as good. The beef was perfectly tender, and the flavours that came from the plate were second to none.
For dessert we chose the Lemon and Treacle Tart and the Apple Strudel. These both finished off the meal perfectly.. simple puddings, done exceptionally well. (We then had a cheeky cheese board just to finish it off properly!!)
The food was amazing, cooked perfectly and presented exquisitely. We couldn’t fault anything.
The staff at The Crown were the icing on the cake for us. All so polite and helpful, but one lady stood out from the rest. I believe her name is Helen (my apologies if I am wrong!) She had us laughing and joking right from the moment she showed us to our room. She was super accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. She went through the menu with us when we couldn’t quite decide on what we were having and was just a general delight to be served by. It’s not often you come across people like her, but she really made the evening. This woman is an absolute credit to your team!
Breakfast the following morning was just as good. A wonderful continental selection that we could help ourselves too, and then we both opted for the full English which lived up to the dinner of the night before. The tomatoes were fabulous!
All in all I can honestly say this was one of the best overnight stays I have had, along with one of the nicest meals too. We couldn’t fault anything, even if we tried! The setting, the accommodation, the food, the staff all made this a very memorable stay, for all the right reasons. We will most definitely be returning, as I didn’t want to leave! Thank you so much to the staff at The Crown, you’ve all done an amazing job. A real hidden gem!!
