After looking unsuccessfully for a late booking in the centre of Glasgow, Hotels.com suggested Oakwood. This was a little further out than I intended to be but when I arrived it seemed I had got lucky.
The property is set in a very scenic and tranquil little valley. There is ample parking and easy access down a small country lane about a mile from the centre of Lanark. Immediately after booking online I received a phone call from owner Keith, to confirm my booking, arrival time and make sure I was able to find the property without difficulty.
When I arrived at the property Keith was there to greet me with an umbrella in the car park (to save me from the good Scottish weather!), and kindly helped carry some of my luggage in.
The building itself is gorgeous inside; open plan, spacious, modern and peaceful; a bit like the places you see on Grand Designs! As an added bonus; there is a large games room containing a full size snooker table, and other pastimes such as chess sets available.
Keith then proceeded to book me in, and showed me the room which was beautiful. Spacious, comfortable, well appointed and lots of little touches like bathrobes, home made cakes, water and ice cubes in a nice insulated bucket make this a luxurious place to stay. The room had a gorgeous balcony looking out to the valley and trees beyond; sadly the good Scottish weather kept me from sampling it. Ensuite bathroom facilities are similarly excellent, with the most powerful invigorating shower I have experienced, and a bright spacious and well appointed layout.
Keith also very helpfully provided a recommendation and contact number for dinner at the Inn on the Loch, a nice Bistro / restaurant in Lanark. The food there was tasty and well priced, and the place was busy (always a good sign).
After setting such high standards everywhere else; the included breakfast carried on the experience, and Keith served up a fantastic array of breakfast choices, both continental and cooked, all of which were available inclusive of the room rate. The Scottish cooked breakfast was individually done to order and was excellent. Indeed, after breakfast I didn't need to eat until evening!
As I was gathering my things to leave for meetings; I was thinking that I didn't want to leave. It certainly would have been a fantastic place to spend a day roaming around the local area, then coming back to have a relaxing afternoon reading a book.
If I have the opportunity to stay nearby again; I will certainly be back to stay at Oakwood, and can't recommend enough the quality of accommodation and the friendliness of the proprietors Keith and Marilyn.
