We have just returned from a fantastic 8 days in barbados. Luckily for us, due to some maintenance work being carried out at our original chosen hotel, we were re-booked into the Southern Palms.
Firstly, having read other reviews, and I understand that reviews are subjective and based on personal experience. It is true to say that the hotel may lack the total finesse that you would find in a 5* hotel for example. And that is the point. It isn’t a 5* hotel, so should only be judged on that basis.
What you will get with the Southern Palms is a beautiful hotel set on an amazing beach, staffed by friendly, helpful and professional staff.
Our stay at the hotel was faultless. Check in was smooth and quick, (approximately 5 minutes). With all the relevant information being passed to us. Our room was very spacious and comfortable. With a beautiful sea view, a bonus for us as we had been booked into a garden/pool room. We had breakfast included in our package, and what a breakfast it was. An amazing choice to suit all tastes.
The hotel has two pools, which are spotlessly clean. There is a games/activity area with mini golf, an outside gym and table tennis amongst other things. Also available are various items for water sports activities. All of which is provided free of charge. There is also an indoor gym.
All of this on what is considered to be one of the finest beaches on the Island. And it’s understandable to see why.
Our stay at Southern Palms was idyllic. Made all the more special by the staff, who were unparalleled in there desire to make our stay as comfortable as possible.
We certainly will be returning to Southern Palms and encouraging others to do so.

Stayed here for 2 weeks with my partner. What can I say, we had the most amazing holiday in the world. Rooms were spotless with huge bed! (Free bottle of rum on arrival), beach towels are provided free of charge with fresh ones daily. Had a garden view room but had great view of ocean from my bed! Staff are very helpful couldn't fault them in any way at all. Food was lovely for everyone's taste. Pool areas are very clean, the facilities on site was brilliant, all equipment for mini golf, snorkelling and body boarding are all free. Gym was clean. Perfect location and beach is unbelievable (sun set is breathtaking). Easy 2 minute walk to the bus stop, but lovely bars and restaurants within walking distance that were nice. Couldn't say a bad word about this hotel overall. Got home 4 days ago and booked my return for next December. Would 100% advise to stay here.

This is the second time we've stayed at the Southern Palms in Barbados. It is ideally situated on the Southern coast in St. Lawrence Gap. The rooms are basic and functional however they are immaculate, cleaned every day with fresh towels. The beach bar is right by the sea with happy hour every day too and live entertainment if that's your thing. The staff are truly great. Nothing is too much for them and they make the place and the stay worthwhile. Wi-Fi in the gym area not great so if you intend to connect there just be aware of it.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at the Southern Palms at the end of August. Our first impression was one of dread as we were driven through a shanty town by our taxi driver and stopped just out at the end of the road opposite our hotel. However, do not let this put it off because as long as you just turn left or right out the hotel the area is fine, just don't go straight!
Room:
The room was by no means the standard you would expect from a four star hotel and in major need of renovation. The shower was horrible and so small that when you were in you barely had enough room to turn around and there was a mark on the toilet seat when I arrived which the maid did not clean the entire week. In addition, the maid thought it was a good idea to remove the wet bath towel and throw it in my suitcase?! The air conditioning worked ok but then every time a maid came in they turned it off so it was always too hot when I got back to the room. There was a large tv with wifi and lots of channels which was a good feature and perhaps the only modern aspect of the room. The paintwork was also in need of some TLC as this was also looking tired.
Social & Facilities:
There is a mini golf course, shuffleboard and watersports available on site which seems more than other local hotels. There is also a rum party on the Monday night, Sunday jazz lunch and a live band several nights a week. However the 'gym' consists of about three machines which for someone who normally visits the gym six times a week was somewhat disappointing and could really do with being brought into the 21st century.
Food:
We ended up eating all our main meals at the hotel as the food was so good, especially the breakfast pancakes and the pastas and salads for dinner. Other reviews claim that the food is overpriced, however I disagree with this as an average main course was £10-15 and this was cheaper than the surrouding restaurants we looked in. They also do a 2 for 1 cocktail hour every night which is good to make use of, the daiquiris are partiucularly nice. However, the cutlery and plates are left out all day and night which seems rather unhygenic as the restaurant isn't covered in so is bombarded with insects and little birds, which can then crawl all over them. There is also free afternoon tea but this ivery basic and you get one cake, which is normally a muffin or a slicee of loaf with no scones in sight which was disappointing!
Wifi Access:
This was one of the things which really let the hotel down the signal was atrocious the entire stay. We tried the wifi on a number of devices all around the hotel and even when it was showing as full signal, it frequently did not work.
Staff:
99% of the staff are very friendly and go out of their way to help you, we had particularly good customer service from Betty in the restaurant.
Atmosphere:
We went off season so the hotel seemed very empty and there were some nights where we were the only people in the restaurant, which was a shame.
Turtles:
We were lucky enough to see several turtles in a night and see the whole process of turtles laying their eggs to them hatching and 100s of baby turtles scouring up the beach. If you want to see them, look out for people with red headlamps on the beach and the nests are normally marked out with coconuts on the beach.
Excursions:
We did several excursions which we would recommend if you're staying at the hotel including a land safari, Atlantis submarine trip and afternoon tea at Sandy Lane.
If this hotel was renovated then we would probably return in the future but for the amount it cost I think we would stay elsewhere in future otherwise.

Southern Palms was definitely one of the best hotels in St Lawrence Gap, (which to our suprise looks pretty rundown in alot of areas). The hotel was large but quiet and very well looked after. There are 2 pools, a small gym, minature golf, a bar by the beach that served good food and great cocktails, a posh restaurant, bands playing throughout the week and many other facilities.
There is a resident parrot called Koko who has been there since the 60's. She was a very sweet and intelligent creature and just loved attention.
Our room was on the ground floor opposite the main pool. It was a bit dark and we couldn't sleep at night because of the whistling frogs which liked to congregate under our window. I explained this to the guys at reception who happily moved us to the top floor. The new room was such an improvement - the view from the balcony was excellent, we had a great sea view.
The rooms were very clean and the air conditioning system was a blessing.
The staff - particularly the older folk were very friendly and laidback and up for a good chat when the place was quiet.
The beach was beautiful and we enjoyed swimming in the sea with turtles. To be honest we stayed away in our 2nd week there because the salesmen (they call themselves sharks) were getting annoying. We'd be trying to relax on the beach and were approached by about 4 different guys in 30 minutes. Although they're friendly they can be difficult to get rid of once they start showing you their necklaces, t-shirts etc.
They also hang around the Gap and we found walking down to the local supermarket was a bit of a challenge. One time we saw 2 girls ignore a local street seller who was trying to get their attention and he ended up swearing and shouting after them. It was a shame really cos most of the locals are really nice, but i guess you get characters like that wherever you go in the world.
There is a fantastic choice of restaurants in the area but we usually ended up at the steakhouse or chinese across the road where the food was excellent and cheap.
We got a bit bored of sunbathing so we went on loads of tourist trips to get out of the area for a while. We booked everything through our Virgin rep and had a fantastic time seeing the island and learning about it's history.
If you do go to Barbados please make sure you padlock your luggage - we had stuff stolen including our digital camera, Virgin were pretty reluctant to help and our travel insurance doesn't cover luggage when it's with the airline. It was a pretty upsetting beginning to our holiday and I wouldn't wish it on anyone else.
All in all, the hotel was excellent - the bad experiences we had were in no way the hotels fault and after 2 weeks we had both begun to see why people rave about Barbados as it is a beautiful place - if a little rough round the edges!
