I would have given this 4.8 out of 5 if I could, but didn't quite think it merited a 5.
Hotel was lovely, staff helpful & friendly (mostly-just a couple seemed a bit miserable).
We were originally given room 140 which must be the worst room in the resort. It's large, but has no garden or pool view (as it is sold) as it is in the corner and only has the door opening onto the garden. The windows open onto the back of the resort to the road and the shop which is near the Beauty Salon. The air con was totally un-suitable for the size of the room and it was very stuffy. If you are given this room (or 240 I would think is not much better) I would ask for another straight away.
We decided to upgrade to an Ocean View and were given several choices to look at, so very pleased with the one we chose. Aircon much more efficient and great views straight out onto the ocean, the small pool and garden around it (we chose room 202). Lovely light and airy room with plenty of storage and a sink/fridge/kettle area.
Great location right on the beach. Grounds lovely and well tended. 2 clean pools and plenty of sun beds by the pools and on the beach.
Sea was a bit rough and would possibly go somewhere further north for calmer water, but overall a lovely place to stay. Saw turtles off shore every afternoon and even snorkelled and saw them one day when the water was a bit clearer.
Plenty of places to eat & drink outside in St Lawrence Gap.
Ate at their restaurant several times. Food good and not the most expensive we found in the area. Breakfast was good. We only had one in the hotel. Yes, the buffet is a bit expensive, but there are a lot of other options on the menu to keep the price down.
Only downside to the menu was that almost everything we wanted at lunch time came with chips or wedges, but all delicious.
Although the restaurant has a smart casual dress code for the evenings you get the same menu if you eat in the bar area and shorts and flip flops are ok here.

Just returned from a 10 day stay at this lovely ,relaxing hotel .We were upgraded to an oceanview suite in the newer part of the complex. Fabulous accommodation but as this is Duplex in layout not suitable for any with problems with stairs .(also on the 3rd floor) .We were bed and breakfast only as wanted to make the most of some fabulous local restaurants . (eg castaways and Champers ). Breakfast was very good , lunches in the bar fabulous and the 2 nights we ate in the restaurant good. Sunday lunch Jazz session is great fun . Cleanliness was superb . We booked massages in the beauty salon and really thought these were very good indeed. The cocktail menu in happy hour could be better . Spotting turtles in the sea was also a highlight for me ! we hope to return .

On arrival had to approach Reception to be acknowledged, no welcome just straight into costs for towels, safe etc. Door to room was faulty day one and talked down to when I informed Reception that the temporary fix didn't work.

Misleading advertising didn't help, eg tthe Beauty Spa was a hair salon and the gym was tiny with unsecure equipment. A run down resort with rude Reception staff and the urge to escape after a day. Not a pleasant introduction to a first time visitor to Barbados. The best thing about this place is the location - the worst is everything else.

I read lots of positive reviews for Southern Palms prior to booking and was not disappointed at all. I had a spacious beach view room although I booked a garden view room so this was a great bonus. I celebrated my 40th birthday in Barbados, St Lawrence and from my ground floor patio watched the day break on my birthday. The location is right on the beach so a glorious sunrise and the sound of the waves breaking on the shore was a perfect start to my birthday.

The hotel has good free water sport facilities and as I'm a keen tennis player took advantage of having an enjoyable morning hit/coaching lesson with the resident coach, George - Barbados' over 45's champion.

There is also a hair salon on site which gave a very efficient, professional service and finish to my basic wash and set. It was a lovely bit of pampering. The hotel also provides beach towels for use during the stay which automatically has a $50 deposit but as long as you return the towels on departure the $50 is refunded. I did not eat at the hotel but there are many eateries to choose from as the Gap is only a few minutes walk away. There is a cafe opposite the hotel which provides excellent breakfast , lunch and dinner for fraction of the hotel price.

Local national Barbados calls are free at the hotel which was really useful.

The only negative point I could make is the pressure of the shower in my room was not great and there are only side lamps and no ceiling light so entering the room you fumble around in darkness to turn on the table lamp. There was also a short supply of conveniently positioned powerpoints but the room and bathroom were clean and spacious. The negatives are very minor and few.

On the whole Southern Palms was great and I will be returning in the future again.

We went to Southern Palms for two weeks in August. What can I say?

The Transfer.
The location was superb, through the hilly, lush green of Bardbados' interior, passing shanty towns and small one room huts, before finally heading out towards the more popular areas with tourists on the beachfronts. We had a witty tour guide who pointed many interesting local features.

The Arrival.
Again, we checked in smoothly and were greeted courteously and swiftly by experienced staff. Luggage was taken to the room and you just followed it along, feeling guilty for not lifting a thing. That seems to sum up the pace of life there: flowing gently along, with no-one seeming hurried, rushed or swamped with tedious paperwork and routine.

The Room.
The rooms were large and spacious. Beautifully clean, white and cool with a double and single bed, large balcony overlooking the Caribbean Sea, plenty of storage space for clothes and suitcases and a well equipped bathroom/ showerroom and toilet area. There was air-conditioning in the rooms as well as direct dial telephones.

There was a television in the room which didn't get much use to be honest as one look at the spectacular view kept me on the balcony/ beach/ poolside for two weeks!

The Pool and facilities.
There were two pools, both of which were quiet, well laid out and enjoyable to be in. A mini-golf course, gym, shop and hair/beauty salon were all on-site and there was a restaurant overlooking the Caribbean Sea. This was very expensive though but the Mango Dachquiries (sic) were worth every penny. Sitting by the Caribbean Sea, sipping drinks and listening to a Steel Band is the stuff dreams are made of. There is a very cheap little restaurant just across the road from Southern Palms. It serves generous portions and several dishes. The two of us ate there every lunch and evening for two weeks when we discovered it (for about £15 for a full meal for the both of us). The Jade Garden also just across the road and next door to our little restaurant is well worth a visit for some Chinese cuisine.

The Area.
St. Lawrence Gap has many features, facilities and local shops (where rum is cheaper that anything else and everyone seems to drink rum and coke). There are some gorgeous beaches within walking walking distances as none of them are private, one can enjoy some pure white, sandy beaches lapped by a blue sea. The sand doesn't get hot and a cool breeze keeps the sunshine and temperature bearable. The only irritation is that its not long before you will be disturbed by the "sellers" on the beach but a polite "No Thankyou" usually works (and there is a Police presence to deter some of more unsavoury characters "selling" Aloe Vera for sunburn, when really its an offer to purchase something "smokeable"...). Watch out for the mosquitoes though (my partner was bitten a few times, but they didn't seem to like me for some reason and I escaped untouched).

The Beaches.
Its only a few yards from the poolside/ restaurant to the beach. There are loungers and umbrellas available and its fabulous to just spend 20 minutes in the sun, cool off in the sea (watching Turtles keeping carefully out of reach) before returning to your sun lounger for another 20 minutes. Doing that all day doesn't take too much effort either! This is truly paradise. Swmming with Turtles, watching the sun rise and set, and having Tea and Cake promptly at 4.00pm each day at the poolside is really an experience I'd recommend to anyone.

Time to Leave
Two weeks flew by. I totally unwound because of the restful pace of life and went back to work feeling refreshed. Its a place that's got something we dream about and I'll definitely be going back there soon. I started to look at properties out there within a few days as I knew I'd never get back onto the bus to the airport without a lot of regrets because I was leaving Barbados!
