My first impression of Malapascua was 'where the hell do I sunbathe!?' The beach is just covered in boats, which is obviously not the fault of Hippocampus.
I hate seeing caged animals, and hated all the caged birds at Hippocampus. Very unnecessary, and something a few other guests said they were put off by too.
The managers there were lovely, as were everyone at the dive centre.
The food was good, slow service but good. Great menu. Extremely stroppy waitress, never polite and definitely no service with a smile!!!
I thought the restaurant, bar area and the rooms were wonderful. So beautifully decorated! All wooden, and I had beautiful wooden chairs on the balcony. My ensuite could have done with a bit of TLC but that's all. There was loads of storage space in the room.
Behind the hotel was a building site when I was there, but my lovely balcony faced the other direction so that was fine. No noise either, but I was up early everyday.
Nice atmosphere in the evening but as everyone's diving most people seemed to leave the bars pretty early. Which was great for me it meant I got a nice peaceful nights sleep.

Just let me say a few words regarding our "caged birds". In fact we keep a number of Nicobar pidgeons here, which I received from a Frenchman many years ago. We started with 4 birds. These beautiful and endangered pidgeons (they need small, forested and uninhabited islands with access to fruiting trees) are living in a well sized aviary and we are one of the few places, where they regularly breed. Over the years we have been able to raise more than a dozen chicks and given away 6 of them to another breeding centre in Subic Bay already. We even got acknowledged by the scientific director of one of the leading bird parks in the world (Walsrode in Germany), who actually braught us into contact with the guys in Subic. Shame that the commenting author did not approach me for a talk here in the resort.

We had a great stay here in Hippocampus Beach Resort. After the boat transfer from mainland Cebu to Malapascua Island, my friends and I have no idea where this resort was located. Good rhing that The locals are so accommodating and helpful. They lead us to the resort and gave some tips what to do around the island. The check-in process on the resort was also a breeze since we have already booked and paid the rooms via www.agoda.com. Our rooms are clean with comfy beds. We also enjoyed the balcony of our room where we have our nightly chit-chat about the day's adventure. The resort is nicely located. We actually did some resort hopping in terms of lunch-outs and dinner-outs. I have all praises about the resort except for their high priced menu. Overall, we had a great stay.

Originally I was only going to stay for 8 nights on Malapascau and then move onto to another part of Philippines, however due to the outstanding way Hippocampus is run and the friendly nature of the place, I decided to spend my entire time on Malapascau and so extended my stay at Hippocampus.
Hippocampus is the sort of place that instantly makes you feel welcome and like a second home. All the staff are incredibly friendly and attentive to any needs.
I stayed in a superior room which was excellent; the air-con worked, the shower was hot, the toilet flushed and the bed was comfy, I could not have asked for anything more. The location is also great being 20m walk to the beach; there is nothing better than getting up after a big night and being able to jump straight in the water and go for a swim.
The bar at Hippocampus was also one of the best on the island. This is the sort of place where you call in for one drink on the way back to your room and next thing you know you’ve had 10. This is thanks to the friendly owners and the staff.

Checked in last Valentine's day.
Food was great. Room was small but clean. Allowed us to early check in. Accommodating staff. Beach front. Happy hour on cocktails during sunset. Their beach has a great view of sunset while lying on their beanbags.
No hassle in check in and check out. Staff Encouraged us to pay them in cash since they're running out of cash for the staff's payday but paid them thru credit card with additional 10% on our total bill since there's no ATM in the island and we ran out of cash also. Overall 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

We had to charge you 9% extra because you request to cash out some Money and pay with Credit Card. This is going through our Business Bank Account and we have to pay Tax for it, that's why 9%. We stayed here for 5 nights and wish it was more. By the time we left we knew nearly every staff member by name. We were treated so well and the staff went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. One night I had a head ache and someone went to a store and got me Tylenol, our daughter needed a life jacket to swim and one was provided. We needed an extra bed, no problem. Every request was enthusiastically met.
Our suite was ground level, right on the beach, which was a very much appreciated spot to be a young daughter.
The restaurant is right on the beach too, the chef comes out during every service to check on the guests meals, where do you see that kind of service? oh and the food was incredible, every plate.
The managers Lee and Dor were awesome as well. Very approachable and friendly.
We were thankful the live band scheduled for the Saturday night had to cancel, because Lee has some serious skills on the guitar and microphone, he entertained us for hours!
It won’t take you long to tell this is a well cared for hotel with a team that loves what they do. Yes it’s on the beach and malapascua is paradise, but the love you get from the staff makes it just that much more special. Hippocampus deserves more than 3 stars. Based on my experience, it’s better than most 5 star resorts in the Philippines.
This place stole our heart.
