My husband and I took Johanne's 8-day detox and yoga retreat at Tambo Ilusión and have come away as new people. This retreat is serious business - Johanne takes care of all of the details to make the detox process as smooth as possible. And the results are palpable: I have a fairly stressful job and was doubtful that 8 days would be sufficient to completely relax, but I truly feel like new.
The tambos are lovely little havens, with comfortable beds and space out front to hang out in the hammock. The food is delicious, there is plenty of it, and it is so well-thought out and well-presented (and tasty too) by Johanne that it rivals any vegetarian restaurant I have ever frequented. There are supplements to help the detox process; natural teas, juices; we never felt hungry at any point in the process - even during the final one-day juice fast. I suggest purchasing Johanne's cook book too, for when you inevitably have to leave you can recreate the healthy dishes back at home. I learned so much about how diet plays a huge role in one's health in general, including mental health, and have changed some of my less healthy habits as a result.
The location is spectacular - Armando has been caring for his land for over 30 years and is a wealth of information of the plants, trees and animals that inhabit the area. The information he provides regarding the medicinal properties of the trees and plants is fascinating. There is a fresh water lagoon with a small dock for swimming and practicing yoga and meditation; a beautiful yoga/meditation room - my favourite place during the retreat; walks in the rainforest; time spent with Ayla their horse; Reiki sessions and massages; in short, fantastic value for money.
There is a perfect balance between the activities and down-time for relaxing. Johanne is careful to ensure that you are feeling great and accommodates the activities to suit your mood.
Tambo Ilusión is a haven of peace and tranquillity located in the Peruvian region of Amazonas. Johanne and Armando have created perfect programmes for people who need to reboot, refresh and take stock of what is important. We will likely make this a yearly pilgrimage!
I did the 5 day yoga and nature retreat, I don't know where to start this review as it was 10/10 for me. It was just amazing. I wanted to do more than one retreat in a row but I had run out of travel time. All the retreats look amazing and after visiting I want to do them even more! Tambo illusion was beautiful and Armando and his team do an amazing job at keeping it protected and conserved. It was very inspiring to see and meet someone so dedicated to this. It was very hot so don't forget some cooler clothing but also remember to bring long cloths for mosquitos. Don't forget your swimmers either because the lagoon they have is so so so relaxing, you can't not get in it!! I only wore bug spray once on the trek and only gotten bitten once by a sand fly so bonus of this area is the mosquitos aren't crazy. You just need to where socks and long cloths early morning and early evening. The yoga was in depth and Johanne was an amazing teacher. She has so much knowledge and patience to be able to create an amazing schedule for you and I can see she can customise depending on level. I have been to a few classes back at home all ready and honestly nothing compares to Johannes teaching! I also received reiki from Johanne which was incredible and she also reikid my room after I had some bad dreams the night before. The food was amazing cooked by Daniel and Gabriella. I had lemon tea brought to me each morning by Johanne which was a great start to the day. The meals were created with love and passion, they were absolutely delicious. On my last day I also got to prepare a breakfast with Johanne and it was an amazing end to my stay. I've come home very inspired to eat better, live better and do the thing I love doing more. This experience was more than I could have asked for and I really hope to return one day! Tambo illusion is rustic and would be amazing to just stay a few nights at through out your travels but it was an amazing way to finish my 5 week trip in peru by attending the retreat and delving deeply into ming body and spirit connection. Would highly recommend :)
I came to Tambo Ilusion after a month of ayahuasca ceremonies near Iquitos for a week of relaxation and processing and I couldn't have picked a better spot.
Armando has built up this beautiful garden of delights from a piece of pasture land over the last 30 years, joined by Johanne, who, as well as helping to facilitate the ongoing conservation, offers some of the finest food I've ever tasted, as well as great yoga classes in the splendid maloka onsite, and the two of them have created a warm and friendly space that feels much more like a family retreat than a holiday let, where good conversation, nature, peace and well-being are the priority, with plenty of room to take your own space.
I essentially turned up and spent a vast amount of time in the hammock outside my lovely tambo and swimming in the wonderful onsite lagoon, hanging with Armando and Johanne and the excellent Rich and Chris who are working there at the time, reading and writing, doing yoga and meditating, and enjoying the company of the other good folk who stayed there. Again: Johanne's (and Teresa's) food is out of this world - super healthy and stupendously tasty.
I also did a great aya ceremony with Rich on my last evening, which set me up for my ongoing journey south to Cusco, and made for a perfect ending to what was a special week.
If you're reading this and wondering if you stay go here or stay somewhere else, take the first option, it's an amazing place to be.
Thanks to all, I really hope to see you again when I'm back in Peru later in the year.
My partner and I were at Tambo Ilusion this past October. We had been looking forward to arrive in the Amazon jungle for some R&R. Armando had organized an airport pick-up and a friendly mototaxi driver greeted us at the exit of the Tarapoto airport. It was just a 15 minute drive to Tambo Ilusion. Tambo Ilusion is close to the city but it is in another world! We were in the jungle!!!
We were greeted warmly by Johanne and Armando who showed us to our lovely cabin called a “Tambo” which is made of natural material and is cozy. There is a good distance between each tambo. Their thatched roofs are high which gives them a feeling of spaciousness. We took pleasant “siestas” and got the most restful nights’ sleep. It’s easy to get lost in the soothing sounds of the wild life and of the melody of the wind rustling the leaves of the trees. We spent quality time in the hammocks as well.
There are also lovely constructions made of mud and straw. The reading room is located in one of them and the shared and spacious bathrooms in another. Tambo Ilusion’s environment is rustic and quaint and also offers luxuries such as hot water showers, very comfortable beds and pillows, amazing sunsets, a private fresh water lagoon…
The grounds are beautiful. During our time there, Armando took us on a walk around his property and showed us his 14 hectare garden! He explained his permaculture project, which is at its beginning stage his projects in his hoop houses, in the pond, with the bees, with the horse, on the forest trail… Armando is very passionate and knowledgeable about his
surrounding! There is an abundance of fauna and flora on the property thanks to Armando’s care and love for his land.
Combined with Johanne’s care through excellent yoga classes in the gorgeous “maloca”, Reiki sessions and her healthy and delicious vegetarian meals, we felt amazing after just a few days! We had lovely candle lit dinners sharing delicious food and lovely conversations with the other guests as well.
It was hot and humid while we were there and taking a dip in the lagoon just hit the spot. Sitting on the deck with our feet dangling in the water, we observed many varieties of birds fly into their nests or fly over the water to land on a branch nearby. This gorgeous lagoon is the heart of the property. The forest and its ecosystem depend on this water source that Armando has been protecting all these years.
Our time here was more than relaxing and restful, it was inspiring, restorative and educative. We learned a lot from Armando’s and Johanne’s passions. This lovely couple complete each other very well and generously welcome guests, who are interested in an unforgettable, alternative vacation experience into their home.
We highly recommend going to Tarapoto to spend quality time at Tambo Ilusion, a sanctuary located in Peruvian jungle.
Visited in September with my boyfriend. After being around tourists all vacation it was nice to get away and retreat into the jungle. Johanne and Armando were very welcoming they picked us up from the airport, gave us directions to the village and really let us do our own thing. The tambos (bedroom huts) were amazing, it felt like we were at a luxury camp ground, going to sleep with the sound of the jungle there's no better soundtrack than that! My boyfriend spent most of the week lying in the hammock that hung outside our door. A daily dip in the laguna was nice, and the food was AMAZING! Vegetarian food never tasted so good, each meal left us full! Of course in the jungle there was the issue of bugs, I don't like wearing bug spray but it was a must if we didn't want to be on the menu for the evening.
During our stay Armando took us out on a nature walk through the rain-forest and we participated in a Ayahuasca ceremony...must do if you are in Peru! I'm a yoga teacher so I was very interested in scoping out the place for future retreats! It is perfect for a yoga retreat, peaceful, intimate, the studio space is clean and well equipped. I would definitely consider it as a future retreat option and highly suggest it to any other teachers looking for retreat locations. If you're looking to just practice yoga, Johanne is a great teacher, very articulate and gives clear instructions (alignment based yoga for those who care).
All in all I would return. If nothing but to get away and relax!
