The good: The staff was very nice and helpful. The lodging is centrally located on the main street in Mindo, making it easy to access all the attractions and restaurants. The food was good, although the lunch was overpriced.
The bad: No hot water for the showers, the pool is covered and doesn't get heated by the sun, making it very cold, and the cabins are very small. They advertise breakfast as being served from 8-10, but we waited until almost 9am for our breakfast our first morning there, despite being in the dining room at 8am. The windows in our cabin would not close, although the staff finally did fix them when we pursued the topic. This is especially important because in April there was an incident in Mindo where two tourists were attacked by a man who came into their cabin through the bedroom window.
The ugly: We got locked out of the hotel one evening. We left around 6pm for dinner and returned at 8. The staff knew we were staying another night, and even greeted us on the street as we walked to a restaurant for dinner. When we returned at 8, the hotel was locked, they didn't answer when we rang the bell, nor did they answer any of the 4 phone numbers they left. Everything in the town was closing up, and there we were left on the street alone. We eventually found another hotel that would accommodate us, but at 9pm we decided to give Bird Planet one last chance and finally they opened the doors. The owners explained they had gone out. This is, in my opinion, unacceptable and for this reason I cannot recommend anyone staying here.
