Booked last minute for a visit to the area. The price was quite decent although of course you can't read too much into that as the prices for rooms always fluctuate wildly.

Location is off the beaten track so it could easily be really out of the way. I wouldn't want to have to drive all the way there if I wasn't wanting to be in the area specifically.

As a hotel - and putting aside the Covid restrictions;

Generally ok. It's not a 5-star, but it was comfortable enough and the staff were friendly. The reception area is a bit poky and not a very good welcome, but beyond that, it's generally ok. The room itself was fine (a family room), but a typical 'creaky English' - in need of some maintenance and a revamp. So many hotels are like that. In particular the shower had no water pressure and the toilet flush was temperamental.

There is free wifi, but no reception in the bedroom.

Nice view from the room though. It's a nice area - could be worth coming just to explore the area one day.

The bar was good and the evening bar food was pretty good quality.

The breakfast was also very good, although we missed a few things that you'd normally pick up from a buffet. When it's not there, you forget to ask specifically.

Good points - staff were welcoming, breakfast was good
Bad points - room needs a bit of maintenance

I'd be happy to come again though if I had a reason to be in the area. I wouldn't want to pay any more than the price I got for this stay though.

Absolutely lovely stay here . Room was spacious and clean and was in theme with the style of hotel bed was very comfy . Roast beef at tea time was amazing as was a full English breakfast this morning . presentation was bang on . social distancing was in place .Everyone wore masks or a face shield until seated and table service was on hand . Sanitizing stations were placed around the hotel .
The hotel staff and management were all lovely and very friendly nothing was to much trouble for them. Myself Lianne and daz highly recommend .

Check-in was quick and easy. Our room (number 7) could do with a lick of paint but was fine otherwise (quirky railway theme, which I liked). There is no shower and again this wasn't an issue for me, I just had a bath but it would be a pain if you were there for longer I think. We had booked to eat at the hotel and I was concerned after I'd read some of the reviews but I needn't have worried. I had the beef, cheese and bacon burger and hubby had the Rudyard burger. It came promptly and was delicious. The only downside to the hotel is that the bar closes at 9, even to residents, which no-one had mentioned. It was a Saturday night of the bank holiday weekend so makes no sense. What made even less sense was that the bar person was still there when we went to bed at around 10.15! So why not carry on serving? Is it something to do with Covid? The hotel needs to re-look at that I think. Anyway, the hotel is in a lovely position for a walk along the lake or a ride on the miniature steam railway. I'd definitely go back and if we had a room with a shower and the bar stayed open longer I'd give it a 4 out of 5.

Came her for a drink a couple of weeks ago and sat in the beer garden it was lovely we had eaten outside and the food was lovely so we decided to go back for lunch today
'Big Mistake'
We were sat in a dining room which felt like a school canteen, I ordered the 'Posh Fish Finger Sandwich' which was 2 small fillets of fish with a brioche bun, I had it last time I was there and it was cooked to perfection flaky fish in a very light batter, totally different today it was over cooked the batter was burnt so the fish was hard and didn't flake at all, the fat seeped out of it when I touched it. I ate almost half but couldn't cope with any more, in fact I felt sick afterwards.
My husband had the steak ale pie, he said it had no flavour and the gravy was like water, he thought it was just a warmed up shop bought pie.
We did mention to the waitress how bad the fish was but she just said she'd mention it to the chef
really disappointed we won't be returning any time soon

Myself and my fiancee stayed here with my fiancees daughter and her friend. An overnight stay as we were at Alton Towers for 2 days. Made to feel most welcome. The lad who checked us in was so polite(didn't get his name). We only had a couple of drinks ks but the lady behind the bar was really chatty , she turned up the thermostat on the heat as one of the girls was complaining of the room being cold, can assure you it was fine though😊. We took our drinks is to our room as she was closing the bar at 9 and we decide it was only polite to do so. Had breakfast and was served by the owner who again was extremely welcoming. We gather a family run hotel and they do look after their guests. We had a lovely breakfast before we left, it set us up for the day. Would definitely stay again If we visit the area again. The food on the menu looked good from what we saw of it on the bar menu. Keep up the good work and thank you for having us
