We stopped off here for a night while on a slow, meandering road trip from Pietermaritzburg to Cape Town. This house has a wonderful position at the end of the road right on 2nd Beach Port St Johns. The view is magnificent. In the day there was the lagoon, golden sand and crashing waves, at night a pink full moon rising over the sea. There's a great restaurant (The Delicious Monster) close by where we ate fresh fish that night. We had a cold beer at the Wood n Spoon next door and chatted to some residents. The atmosphere was relaxed and we had a happy, albeit brief stay. The bed was comfortable, the sheets clean, the shower water hot and the vibe good. We felt we'd had a pleasant experience and met interesting people.
The approach to the house is a bit run down, along a bumpy dirt track past some houses that have seen better days. 2nd beach is also a few km out of the town. Neither worried us - we liked the remoteness. Also, the rooms are not en suite - we had a private bathroom just across the passage, which was clean and the water was hot. I guess it's all about what you are looking for - we like rustic places. If you're after 5 star luxury, this is not the place for you.
My husband and I saw pictures of this place which looked amazing - right on the beach! When we got there we realized that the beach was the only positive. The room was not en suite as it appeared in the photo, the bathroom was a walk down a corridor. It was like a university digs there were random people and noise everywhere - a huge drinking fest/braai/ beating of drums was going on. I sat on the bed and after a few minutes realized the sheet was wet in patches!!!!! After some investigating we realized the mattress was soaked!!!!! And smelt awful! After calling the owner from the braai, she gave us towels and blankets to put over and said “ah man my friend stayed over last night I’m going to kill him”!!!!! It was too late for us to leave so we layered towels and blankets over what was presumably a urine soaked mattress and literally fled in the morning!!! The owner really had a good heart and even offered some money back but really it was quite a horrific experience :(
Must be our bad luck two bad places on the trot. Firstly It is well outside Port St Johns, you take the Hermes Rd and that leads directly into 2nd Beach Rd. Keep going to the end and then keep going some more over a small bridge and turn very sharp left onto a dirt track. (This is not a nice area at night) No your not done yet. Keep going and eventually you will see some rough tumbled down gates leading into a dirt yard!! It's not inspiring when you turn up. If its dark you will wonder where you are. Welcomed by the owner (we were supposed to pay cash upon arrival but found that they had already taken it on Visa, we soon found out why) theywere very friendly but from there it goes downhill rather quickly. Asp and staple with a padlock on the bedroom door to lock it. To say the room has seen better days is an understatement of the first order. One good point the sheets were clean and fresh. The en suite bathroom which was booked turns out to be across the corridor and not very salubrious when you see it. Words fail me to describe the fridge in the room. No way would I put food for my dog inside this fridge never mind for me. Moving on to the veranda this is a very small deck area that is neither level, adequate or safe, complete with something that is meant to be a table. You need to see the photo to believe. The only thing going for this place is the view and that you can wade across the water onto the beach. The two owners (Kat & Mike) do like a good slagging match and don't seem to care who can hear. So what happened to the dining area, the seating area, internet access(none existent) I hate to be mislead and I think it's time Booking. Com got there act together and ensured that descriptions were accurate. Nice people but unless your desperate give this one a miss. If it was not so late in the day and the fact they had taken payment we would have left too.
I booked the Lodge on the beach on the 7th Oct 2016 for 7th Jan 2017 and received confirmation spoke to the owner's wife on 4th Jan re-booking and bringing a small dog she said all ok and looked forward to us arriving ,on the 6th got a phone call to say Booking .com had double booked our room (confirmation 90 days ago) and we could not stay and advised us to stay at The Delicious Monster .
later on we met a group of foreign tourists who had recently booked in at The Lodge on the Beach, this was why my room was canceled.
I checked on Tripadvisor and see other visitors have had the same problem !!
I suggest you avoid this place and book in at The Delicious Monster great Food Great Host
We were there in Jan 2017 for one night. To name it diplomatically: the Lodge is different than other Lodges. The rooms are ok, but the windows couldn't be closed 100%. So enough space for small animals to get into the room. The fridge was dirty and needs to be renewed. Even the kitchen was not in that condition so I would never use it.
The wish to have a breakfast at 8am was ignored. Nobody was even awake. We had to wake them up.
From the outside it's really a nice place, but when u get in there....
I wouldn't book it again
