Hard to give a unbiased opinion of our Boschendal experience as we had just arrived after staying at the wonderful One & Only in Cape Town, probably the best hotel experience I had ever had. Boschendal felt a little more ‘everything by the rules’. We arrived at lunchtime and got the impression that under no circumstances would we be allowed to enter our cottage before 2 pm. Reception staff were friendly although we tried to book breakfast for the next day at 3.15 pm - 15 minutes after the cut off time and were well and truly told ‘no’ as kitchen would be not be able to cope with late order! Unfortunately the restaurant was closed the days we were staying which was a huge disappointment. Gardens were nice, although pool not very clean but cottage was nicely furnished with a nice outdoor space with braai. Accommodation was across a busy road from main facilities and every time you wanted to do anything/go anywhere you had to phone for minibus to pick you up which felt a bit restricting. Overall a pretty location, with a nicely furnished cottage.
We have been very looking forward to our stay at Boschendal since we visited the wine estate 01/2018 and fell in love instantly. Upon arrival service at reception was very charming and helpful. We did arrive a little too early but that wasn’t of any problem, we could leave all suitcases with them to be brought to our cottage as soon as it was ready. Also we got offered a glass of MCC which was also very nice. We booked one of the large Werf Cottages. They look just as pretty as you can see on management or website photos - like really pretty! And it’s nice to have so much space since we decided in eat in all days and enjoy the nice view from our garden terrace. The pool is a bit further off (we were in cottage 1) but that is fine. Breakfast from the harvest table is very good, also you can choose between different warm dishes.
Still I must say as it is a popular wine estate and everything has to stay in shape you don’t get that much privacy as you wish. I know it’s a difficult complain but first morning we were woken up around 7am by the lawn mower. Also the cottages are place right next to the main road leading to the estate. Each and every day their are gardening people walking close around the house - I mean right next to your windows. And you can definitely have a nice view inside the cottages. I know these people just do their job and the garden is of high maintenance. I am so sorry to say this but it was really annoying cause you have to watch what you are wearing. So for us this was actually the biggest issue...
For dinner you can either choose the Werf restaurant or just have a little shopping session at the farm shop. We also like the pizza delivery.
We stayed in #4 Orchard Cottage - 2-bed, 2-bath, self-catering.
Very comfortable beds, lovely spacious bathrooms, nicely decorated lounge with a welcoming fire for the nights which were a bit chilly.
Huge patio/stoep area with a built-in braai (BBQ) and a nice view across the open garden area and towards the swimming pool.
The kitchen facilities were perfectly adequate for self-catering, with some nice touches like a bottle of wine and a bottle of fresh milk waiting in the fridge. However, they could do with doubling up on the crockery and cutlery as there was 4 of everything, and that worked fine for 2 people but would be impractical if 4 were staying here.
At the Orchard cottages, you're on the other side of the road of the main Boschendal wine estate, but this means more privacy and less noise, and direct access to some spectacular walks right from the doorstep.
All the staff were excellent - Luke (?) lent me his personal adaptor for my cell phone, the grounds were very well maintained and it's wonderful to see this old treasure of the winelands restored and renewed to this standard. Definitely take a peek at the museum and enjoy a casual meal at the Deli.
I spent one night with my sister and brother in law from Sweden in this delightful cottage
in the retreat area, high up towards the mountains. The cottage is situated on the Boschendal property. The property is stunning and cottages were very nice to stay in.
Very clean, beautiful equipped and lovely views in all directions.
We were self-catering and this cottage suited us very well.
It was very hot the 2 days we spent in the are and we were pleased to be able to have a swim in fire pool on the property.
The cottages can really be recommended.
We had a delightful weekend with children and grandchildren. Barbecue facilities exceptional and user friendly. The communal swimming pool and fire pit area also outstanding. Tranquil setting with lots of shade trees and bird life around. Pricey for South Africans.
