I'll preface by saying I was here for the total eclipse. It was the only place available, even at NYC price of $200/nite. Based on the reviews, I almost canceled. I am so glad I did not. Not to be snooty, but I normally stay in luxury accommodations, yet I was very happy here. Based on the reviews, I expected Addams Family. Or the Exorcist.
Is it run down? Miserably so. Does it look like "drifter" lodging? Yep. But they were most friendly and the room/fridge was clean, clean, clean. Free bag o' chips and water. Free solar glasses. Freshly washed blanket on demand. Great bed. Good internet. Could you really ask for more? Well, yes, but considering the hordes of eclipse watchers, at its epicenter , it worked just fine.
If your really on a budget, this is the place to go.
The price was right, I booked via booking.com. The appearance when we arrived made me nervous. But we were driving 12 hrs and needed a rest. The man told me the price was wrong and told me it's $74.00/night when I booked for $54.00.
I refused so he gave it to me. Was grumpy when I asked for a receipt and wouldn't give me my change until I returned the key.
The room was very old and dated. I got an earry feeling when entering the room. The curtains had holes in them looked like bullet holes. I was so freaked out (bad energy or something) I slept about and hour then packed my family up and kept driving. The beds were hard and worn, could feel springs. The room was very clean. Just very dated and banged up furniture. It was cold. Only a cold air switch, couldn't find the heat. Man at front didn't give me the wifi password. Not a great stay.
Front desk staff fiendly and helpful. Room was newly renovated, new carpet, linens, paint, curtains and bathtub was clean and smelled fresh there is a flat screen Tv, micro wave and fridge. Liked the quietness.
I have stayed in some not so clean pretty ratty motels before even some with drug dealers and hookers going in and out all night but NEVER have I had an experience like this. We pulled into Marion Illinois at 1:30 and out of the 20+ hotels they have at that exit there was no room at any other inn.
We should have just slept in the car.
There was what seemed to be a cross between vomit and slobber on the pillow case, the electrical outlets were not even screwed into the wall. The bathroom door knob? There was not one just a hole in the wall. There was feces smeared on the window sill (likely someone pooped their pants trying to escape) the bathroom window was broken, and fully open with no screen. When Larry tried to close it we discovered there was no lock. We had to jam the garbage can in the window so that when crack heads tried to break in they would at least have to break the window further to achieve their goal. However we soon came to realize that would not be necessary because THEY JUST COME IN WITH A KEY TO ROB YOU. Lucky for us I was still in bed when Larry went to grab coffee because 45 seconds after he walked out the door a man entered with a key. He saw me and slammed the door closed taking off. The carpet was ripped and buckling, the night attendant would only take cash and in a town where every other single hotel was booked this place only bad 1 van in the lot when w got there which had the drivers window that was busted out covered with a piece of carpet.
I recommend that anyone only recommend this no-tell motel to their inlaws and arch enemies. The tub would not drain and the water coming out of it was yellow. The shower knob came out when I tried to turn on the shower but I shoved it back on and was able to get yellow water to shower in. It was just down right filthy.
Staff very rude! Bugs in room, phone line taken off of phone in room. Walked in, walked out and they refused to do a refund! scam, beware! Ask to see room before you pay if you just must stay here, although I would rather sleep in car!
