I traveled to Southern Most Beach Resort this year (October 2020) in order to meet my long lost brother for the first time. Him and his wife stayed at the resort as well. I can't say enough about the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. All of the multiple pools are beautiful and clean, however we spent most of our time out by the beach side pool. The atmosphere, bartenders, and music was great and everyone had a blast! I arrived about a full day before my brother did and as I anxiously anticipated his arrival, the bartender offered to video our first meeting which was not only really cool as he was pretty busy, but I was able to show that video to the rest of my family. The food at the beach bar is great; I wouldn't call it cheap, but considering that you're right on the beach overlooking one of the best views in Key West, they are fair prices. The rooms were clean and comfortable and while the staff was not intrusive due to Covid considerations, they were eager to help with replenishing free water, clean towels, or whatever I needed. I even got to meet one of my favorite comedian/actors at the resort beach bar. Also, fun fact... the Southern Most Point is literally a block down the road. Me personally, I loved the place and I wouldn't even consider staying anywhere else for a couples retreat in Key West.
First, I have to admit, my initial impressions of the resort weren't great. The pools appeared small, and very crowded. Which normally wouldn't be such an issue but ya know, COVID. We saw a lot of trash/litter on our walk from the parking lot to reception, and the place just seemed kinda rundown and dingy looking. The bellman was very nice, handling our bags and showing us to our room. We booked the La Mer/Dewey room type and at no point did anyone give us any information about the amenities. I understand they had to suspend the chef breakfast and afternoon appetizers, as well as turndown service because of COVID which was disappointing, but I get it. However, no one mentioned the replacement options until we inquired about it at the beach cafe, and we didn't receive any information about activities or anything else included with the resort fee. This led us to miss the included breakfast and only claim one of the afternoon apps.
With that said though, we did enjoy our room and the balcony was amazing! We had room #409 in the La Mer House, which in my opinion was the best in the whole resort. The man who checked us in whispered something about an upgrade under his breath, but I'm not sure what he was referring to. We did make a note on our reservation about our Honeymoon and my husband emailed/called in advance to setup something special, but at no point did they mention it or do anything to acknowledge the special occasion. However, we had a very large room on the top floor of the Inn with an amazing balcony that overlooked the beach and had a table and chairs plus two lounge chairs overlooking the fountain below. We spent A LOT of time on this balcony, lounging in the sun during the day, drinking wine at night listening to the waves. Bed was comfortable enough and it was very quiet in this part of the resort at night. We also really enjoyed the Plum wine dispenser in our room!
We ate at the onsite Cafe a couple times for lunch and once for dinner, food was great! Only downside, there is no room-service but it was a very close walk and we could grab beers to-go and take up to our balcony. If it wasn't for such a lovely room, we might not have enjoyed it here as much. We did book one of the oceanfront cabanas online ahead of time and walked past them when we arrived to check them out and ended up cancelling. The photos online are misleading.
Location was great, and walking distance to many things. All in all, we did love our room and balcony, but if not staying in this room again I likely wouldn't rebook.
Front Desk and Concierge: Mai. Emily, Mikheal, and the Concierge (I forgot her name) are the notable mentions. They were able to check us in an hour early upon our arrival, gave us great detail of the property and surrounding areas and all were very friendly and ready to assist. I was even able to get a complimentary late check out as we wanted to stay and enjoy the pool a little longer before driving back to Miami.
Pool and Beach: Heather, Bruno, and other bartender (older gentlemen) were fantastic. We spent most of our time relaxing at the pool and beach drinking delicious frozen cocktails. There was good music playing and you get complimentary lounge chairs with your room key. They even pass out free snacks at the pool! The hotel also has these amazing hammocks overlooking the sea and a pier to watch the sunrise each morning. There is also other sandy areas with cabanas and lounge chairs - so many places to stop and enjoy the views. We even saw a shooting star at the same time on the pier on our first night! We will never forget that moment.
Restaurant: We had breakfast at the restaurant each morning which overlooks the beach. Fantastic food and service!
Guestroom: We received an upgrade to a partial ocean view upon check in! What a way to start the vacation... we were on the ground floor and close to both the pool and the beach, it was perfect! The room was clean, bright, quiet, and spacious. I like how the bathroom area is set up. Massive TV, fridge, A/C and Wi-Fi both worked really well. The roosters woke us up each morning for the sunrise but I actually loved it!
Gym: Had everything I needed and more!
Location: It was exactly where we wanted to be, right on the beach and on Duval Street. Just steps from the resort is the iconic southernmost point photo spot and the Hemmingway House where I saw the 6-toed cats! I would say its on the quieter side of the island which we preferred and would just walk up Duval Street each night and stopped where we pleased.
To summarize I would give this hotel and experience 10/10 and cannot wait to come back with my boyfriend. Definitely a great place for couples even though my friend and I had the best time!
Pros: this resort is pretty huge with three pools, at least two bars, a pier with water access, a grass lawn with hammocks, and easy next door access to the public beach w/ cafe. it’s easy walking to some good restaurants and the southern most point. the concierge is awesome (take advantage of the great deals they have- like scooter rentals with a shuttle!)
Tips: because of the resort being so huge, some rooms are further away from pools and across the street. If you’re going here with a family, try to google a resort map and request a larger room (trust me it’s worth the upgrade) next to the main pool with the shores bar. also, if you book a stay here go ahead and plan on renting scooters/having concierge find a shuttle! most excursions and not-so-touristy restaurants are further up the street, around a mile.
We booked over the phone for a 4 night/5 day stay. When we checked in, I was advised for the first time about the 45.00/day amenity fee. I'm not sure what that charge covers.
We were told that we could pick 2 activities during our stay that would be fully covered by the "Amenity Fee". The first was a wine tasting at the pool. The tasting started 15 minutes late and consisted of 2 tastes of the same wine. Each pour was roughly the amount of a double shot. We were advised that the wine was a Pinot Noir, however, it was a white wine.
The second activity was Beer School, which consisted of a similar size tasting of 2 different beers and no "School".
There was no daily cleaning of our room.
There was a dirty towel, rag and a half full water bottle on the floor by the ice machine which was not picked up the entire duration of our stay.
We requested more shampoo and body wash. They delivered shampoo and conditioner. The person who delivered them said he brought us some fresh towels which he handed to us in a plastic bag. When we opened the bag, we found wet, used, dirty towels.
We observed mold growing on the inside of an ice machine at one of the pool bars. When I noticed it, i tried to wipe off the outside with a napkin only to find out it was on the inside.
My total bill for 4 nights was just under 1700.00(including some food, drinks and 28.00/day parking fees). For this price, I expected a much better overall experience. I will not be returning and do not recommend this resort.
