Date of stay: December 2020
My wife, son (18 months) and I spent 4 nights at Torburnlea in Dec 2020.
The Mataffin estate in which Torbunlea is set is a wonderful low veld oasis, with a sprawling open lawn area for residents, a swimming pool and small walking path recounting the tale of farm and its history. Torburnlea itself is steeped in history and the minimalist aesthetic in many ways allows you to experience this history without sacrificing any luxury. The works of art, décor and design allow for privacy and comfort. It feels like an "Out of Africa" adventure without any of the fuss. The general hands-off approach of the few onsite staff also allows you to sit and relax in the immaculate common rooms unencumbered, the wonderful front porch being a highlight.
I can highly recommend the food; Stanford the Head of House and Chef is a master class. With many a tale if you'll listen and a knack for whipping up some spectacular meals. Definitely arrange a dinner. The wine cellar is also a highlight in this regard and worth viewing even if you don't want any wine.
Although Torburnlea made a special acceptance to accommodate our 18 month old, there was no sacrifice on comfort in the room in which we stayed which was perfectly large, void of clutter and had a number of luxury touches; you can't go wrong with plunger coffee and homemade rusks in the room.
All in all, Torburnlea rests easily among the top tier of South African accommodation.

Thanks so much for your review and we relish the idea of providing a safe and comfortable stay amid our family history in this heritage home. We advertise that we welcome children from the age of twelve, but will always consider the situation with requests to host younger family members. If we are quiet, or once we have had approval from other guests booked in, we often are able to make special arrangements for young families. PS I am a bit serious about my early morning coffee, so am glad that this flows over to our guests' experience together with Stanford's home made rusks!
