From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome to the Makutsi family. We had a great family rondavel with lots of room for the family and a large verandah to relax in the evenings. The game drives are well organised and the guides friendly, knowledgeable with eagle eyes. Its all planned for you and all you need to do is be at the truck on time. The variety of drives at different times ensures you get lots of variety. The pools are also great for some down time. We were paired with a like family for the week on the game drives and saw lots of animals up close. There is a great bar area for sunset drinks before the drums start to invite us to the communal dinning room. Food was great with a great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend you give these guys a go when we can all finally start to travel safely again. We booked in Australia via Out of Africa Travel services, Yvonne was fantastic in tailoring our package to suit our needs. I sincerely hope they survive this pandemic and bounce back on the other side.
We spent almost a week at the village. The safari rides, the day at Kruger National Park, the trip to Blyde River Canyon all amounted to a great visit to this beautiful country. The safari rides on the property were magnificent. We saw more animals, including the big ones, than expected. Champagne, beer and nibbles while watching the sunset on the evening safari ride was just one of the many highlights.
We (two couples) stayed in a family rondavel and it was perfect for us. Clean bedrooms and bathrooms each separated by a large sitting room. We socialised on the large deck out front every day for coffee in the mornings and beverages in the evenings after dinner. Our beer, wine etc was delivered to our rondavel by a staff member with it balanced on her head. No mean feat when one order was a carton of beer and two bottles of wine as well as some coke!
Our trip ended all too soon and sadly two days after our departure the entire village was closing because of the Coronavirus. Once this virus is obliterated we urge anyone who is planning a safari trip in the future to please consider staying at Mukutsi Village. You will not regret the decision. We had a great experience there and it will come back in time.
Spent 1 week here recently. Had heard good things from friends of ours and just so happened this is where our travel agent recommended also.
Our transfer from the airport was early, great! It is around an hour to makutsi from the airport but we were in aircon car so that was fine. When we arrived we were met by Karen with refreshing drinks and shown around.
Makutsi do have some camp rules, no walking before 7am or after 530pm as there are wild animals that frequent the property including antelope, monkeys and occasionally cheetah and elephants. Dinner is at 7pm and you are driven to your room when your ready.
The rooms are neat, clean and well insulated meaning much cooler when it’s hot outside. They have most things you need and are made up daily.
There are 2 drives you can go on in the morning or afternoon, 3-5 hours depending. The animals are so used to the vehicles that they sometimes walk straight past the cars and the guides are always considerate as to how and when they approach the animals. We were very lucky in one of our drives as we got to see all of the Big 5 in 3 hours! Others were not so lucky, it really is all up to the animals on the day.
There is also the option to visit Kruger national park as a day trip (early start) or visit Blyde Canyon, both are great experiences!
Definitely a place we would recommend to others who want to chill out, relax and see some amazing creatures.
In July my family and I had a wonderful 6 days vacation at Makutsi. The guides are very knowledgeable and we were lucky enough to see the big 5. The accommodation was well done, comfortable and clean and our rondavel had a spacious family room and large outside covered balcony. The food was delicious and the kids loved it. Having drinks before dinner with the other guests and then getting to know them over dinner was great. We met some lovely people from other countries, all like minded. The three generations of the family running the business are charming and they genuinely treat and respect their staff with such dignity knowing that they are the pillar of the businesses success. In turn the staff are delightful and really help to make the adventure of the holiday more like a happy family experience. The guides day in and day out were excellent and you can see they enjoyed their job and relished the challenge of informing yet another new group of safari novices. There is an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, internet café with library, a lovely place to relax in whilst having a coffee and reading a book. We thought it was good value for money and unlike some other ones the drinks and lunch aren’t included but this worked out to be cost effective and not too much of a hassle. The safaris themselves are terrific in an open truck, Drakensburg Mts, Blyde River Canyon and Kruger National park excursions were outstanding day trips. If you go in winter be sure to take warm clothes, including wind/puffer jackets, fleece, beanie, gloves for the early morning and afternoon safaris. Thankyou Makutsi team for a terrific family holiday that we will always remember fondly.
A wonderful experience! We really got up close and personal to a large number of wild animals on game drives, while feeling safe in our modified open-air 4 wheel drive vehicles. My "room" was a separate rondavel, (round thatched building) with all mod cons, but a rustic feel. Meals were a large family affair. I'm planning on returning there for more African wildlife encounters.
