We arrived in Koh Lanta to find that the hostel we had booked and paid a deposit for was in fact closed. We were left a bit stranded and following reading the positive reviews of the Zoo, we decided to try there for the night. Do not be fooled by the positive reviews. Our first impression was that the owner was very chilled but accommodating and he proceeded to make up a dorm for us to sleep. The shower in the dorm was not working, but as we had landed late notice we did not mind this and there was alternative shower options available. The owner told us to keep doors etc closed to keep out bugs (which of course is a reasonable request), but when we went into the bathroom of our dorm there was holes and gaps in the walls so it seemed a bit pointless!! There’s also as the owner described a “jungle” outside, surely filling in the wall would be a good idea? We went to the bar next door for a drink and on returning we took off our shoes as previously requested and went to carry them in our hands upstairs. The owner told us sharply to leave them outside on the terrace upstairs. We wouldn’t really have minded this request either, it was the rude manner in which he said it. Also, we went to close the front door as the owner had told us to keep doors closed and unnecessary lights off - and we were told to leave the door open!We had been informed when we checked in that the air conditioning would be turned off at 9 am in the morning. This is fairly standard in some hostels and we were happy enough with this. However, the air conditioning did not turn off automatically and the owner entered into our room without knocking or any prior notice (into a room of six girls) to turn off the air conditioning. I really do not think this is acceptable - even a knock would have been appropriate. We woke up in the morning covered in bites - significantly more than we had gone to sleep with. I have my suspicions that the bites were caused by bed bugs as they are not the same as regular mosquito bites but I can neither confirm/deny this. The owners television/music was playing very loud the night before when we were trying to sleep, and also the following morning. The owner also shouted at his cat using foul language early in the morning. We actually got a bit of a fright. All around the hostel there was aggressively worded signs which were off putting and unnecessary - such as “Don’t piss on the floor”. We’ve stayed in multiple hostels in the past and these signs were really not the norm. We felt like we were intruding. Do yourself a favour and don’t stay here.
The Zoo Hoztel (there is currently no bar here) is located on the busy main road going through Koh Lanta and is an ideal place to stay if you wish to be close to Long Beach. A short 5-10 min walk will get you to the beach front where you can find loads of restaurants and bars, although be aware these will cost more than places on the main road close to the Hostel.
The Hostel itself features a 10 bed dorm room with Air con and an en-suite shower room. Toilets are located downstairs along with another two showers and a large indoor area for which Claudio the owner has plans to utilise as a common area.
The hostel was clean and the host was more than happy to help with any requests the guests had, this includes transport, tours, bikes or just general island advice.
I believe another 10 bed dorm is planned, once this is complete along with the downstairs area I mentioned before, The Zoo should be a great addition to the islands accommodation options!
Thanks Claudio for looking after us :)
I stayed 2 weeks in this place. My room was quite cosy and the food cooked by Claudio was delicious.
Claudio told me a lot about the islands and helped me to do what i wanted (rent a motorbyke, do some activity...), so I enjoyed Koh Lanta, nice, quiet and naturel island, a lot !
I have visited this Hostel before and I became good friends with the Owner.
He got a lovely Hostel, i felt instantly Home that i stayed for such a long time.
I worked online, his Internet was quite good for an Island, i expected it to be way worse.
Claudio has a lot of tips about staying in SEA and you can talk with him hours every day. He is by far the most friendly Hostel owner that i know and i can recommend his Hostel to everybody.
He cleans the toilet every day and atleast once a week your room if you stay longer otherwise every time someone new arrives.
So he cleaned up your Room before you come.
I really enjoyed my stay and I will visit this place and especially Claudio every Time im in SEA
If you think about staying in Ko Lanta, his Hostel is by far the most valuebale Place to stay. There are some other Hostels with a similiar Place, but most they have no wifi, its not a closed room ( in terms of mosquitos) and got no Kitchen or something like this.
You will feel like its your Home, you got a Kitchen there and a refrigerator, so you can buy something and actually store it there.
I went with him a lot out to get something to eat, to the market or other places
Thank you Claudio for the nice stay!
When we came here, the value for the room was excellent -£5 for one night. Room was pretty spacious and comfortable.
Bathrooms were generally very clean.
Location is good, down the road from the restaurants and bars. Unfortunately the bar next door insisted on playing music loudly to all zero of its guests well into the night. But I think Claudio is working hard to get this solved.
He is a fantastic guy, super friendly and gave us great advice for the island.
