I have been longing to try this hotel and I was disappointed, at their rate per night this is so overrated. Though the room was big and easily accommodate our family of 4, the staff were courteous and all smiles and helpful. What I don't like is the smell of the room, smells old and the bath room, it has shown its age and maintenance problem, chipped tiles, stained bath tub, even leaking airconditioning (though was quickly remedied). Breakfast was a joke, they said it would be buffet but looks like they just transferred the plated meal in the trays since you only have one choice.

I live overseas but was visiting family in a nearby town. We wanted to have a staycation with family while shopping at SM Batangas to avoid the usual bad traffic. We wanted to get the best accommodation Batangas City has to offer based on the reviews and hotel offerings, so we were set on one hotel only, Hotel Pontefino. But we were bitterly disappointed just on our first night. After checking in, we went up to our room on the fourth floor and unpacked our bags. As we were about to leave our room, we heard loud sounds coming from the nearby Malvar tent on the ground floor next to the pool, so I asked reception before we left if there was an event that night and how long it was going to last for. The receptionist informed me it would be till midnight. I would have appreciated it if we were informed earlier, perhaps during the check-in process, that there was indeed an event that night, finding it a bit inconvenient that we need to pack our bags again and move. My husband and I thought we could wing it and just have our headphones on to deal with the noise. It also doesn't help that they have tiled floor, instead of carpet.

Upon our return from SM, we were welcomed by the loud noise from the tent, so I called reception and asked for a possible solution. They offered us to be moved to a room on the opposite wing, which we accepted. They were kind enough to upgrade our room as well.

So on the positive side:
1) Super comfortable beds
2) Friendly staff
3) Nice, warm and strong pressure showers.
4) Nice looking pool, though we didn't swim because it was raining and the pool is NOT heated.

However, overall, the detail is where it's at.

1) In the premium room (our original room), the bathroom/toilet gave off a ghastly smell, which I can't really explain and don't want to imagine what the origin would have been.

2) Still in the premium room, the bathroom didn't have any power point for small appliances such as a blow dryer (which they also didn't have on hand, you have to request it).

3) The mini bar didn't have anything in it. (you have to ask)

4) Room service: not all items were available. No fries available even though it's supposed to be included in one of the dishes we ordered.

5) Breakfast was ghastly. The buffet spread looked miserable. The entire buffet only had this: steamed rice, omelette, pancit, chicken wings, bread, cereal, fruits, coffee. Fresh fruits was not fresh; they were obviously from a can of fruit cocktail. Bread was stale. The very few cereal was stale and chewy. No milk readily available on the table, you have to ask, and when it comes, it is presented in the smallest jug. One kind of jam available. It didn't look like a breakfast buffet you would expect from a 4-star hotel. We did have have the option to order from the menu, but again, not everything was available.

Overall, I probably would not stay here again. It's sad but the managers need to benchmark from other 4-star hotels in Metro Manila if they want to improve customers' experience with them.

Suggestions:
1) Improve breakfast buffet...tremendously.
2) Install wall to wall carpets to help with the soundproofing of the rooms.
3) Soundproof Malvar Tent or have noise-cancelling systems.

This property is not new but it has been well maintained over the years.

Pros:

1. Roooms are spacious and clean.
2. Bathrooms have good strong running hot water.
3. Closet space is big enough for a week's worth of clothes plus more.
4. Driving to Batangas is very easy with the SLEX extension to the Star Tollway.
5. Service at the coffee shop is good, servers are attentive to your needs.
6. Breakfast buffet is simple fare, nothing fancy.

Cons:

1. Elevator carpet has a distinct odor, needs to be changed/cleaned regularly.
2. Rooms are tiled, can be a bit slippery - be careful.
3. Room rate is a bit pricey for a hotel outside of Metro Manila.

It’s almost 1.5 year since I last stayed at Pontefino. Several things have changed during that time. For one, when I walked the swimming pool, it’s much cleaner now. Secondly, the new Executive Suite Rooms in a building across the main hotel building have been completed in July. And during check-in, I got a pleasant surprise – the receptionist upgraded me to this Executive Suite Room (due to my company’s patronage of Pontefino), which I would now review.

Hotel Staff: As usual, the service and helpfulness of the staff, including the porter, the receptionist, the security guard and the Robusta restaurant staff, have always been friendly and helpful. The porter showed me to my room. Additionally you would feel safe because there’s a security guard on 24 hour duty just outside the Function Hall or Ballroom.

Hotel Room: The Executive Suite is the 3rd highest tier at Pontefino after the Standard Room and the Deluxe Room but before the Terrace Suite Room. The Executive Suite Room is about 1500 Philippines peso more than the Standard Room. The Executive Suite that I stayed in is on the ground level and at the corner of the building. I believe the helpful porter would help guests bring their luggage and baggage up the stairs to the Suite rooms located on the second and third level since I don’t see any elevators.

The Executive Suite is huge, and that hugeness is further amplified by the fact that all the walls and ceilings are painted white! When I stepped into the Suite, I was greeted by the dining cum living room which has a kitchenette comprising an electric cooker, microwave oven, suction hood and a large refrigerator, a round table with 4 chairs, a L-shaped sofa, a wall-mounted Sony LCD TV and a table with a kettle, a glass pot for coffee making, rare Liberica coffee beans from Batangas (Kapeng Barako), sugar and creamer. Interestingly, there’s an air sensitizer equipment beneath one table.

The dining cum living room then leads to the bedroom and bathroom. The bedroom is really spacious and has a large wardrobe closet with several hangers and a pair of slippers and mirror doors, a queen-sized (I think) bed, 2 bedside tables, a reading armchair, a long working desk, a non-ergonomic chair, standalone lamps and a wall-mounted Sony LCD TV. The bathroom is long and has a glass-enclosed shower area, a WC, 2 sinks with dental kits and towels and a bathtub with a nice sloping edge on one end.

There are 2 balconies – one outside the dining cum living room and the other outside the bedroom. The balcony outside the bedroom overlooks into a unfinished swimming pool and a hotel building under construction.

I appreciated the 6 complimentary bottles of water (2 on the coffee table and 4 inside the refrigerator). The wifi in the room is fast (much faster than my last stay in the Standard Room), the air-con is quiet and powerful. With the copious curtains, you could ensure plenty of privacy. And with 73 TV channels, you are spoilt for choice on entertainment. More importantly, the bed mattress is of the right hardness to allow me a good night’s sleep. Moreover, the bedroom is quiet. When I woke up in the morning at about 7am, I could hear the rooster crowing but it’s in the far distant.

I get the notion that Pontefino may have opened the Executive Suite a tad too quickly without ensuring the room amenities are complete and functioning. This is because there’s no safe (even the Standard Rooms have safes), no laundry form and plastic bag, no iron, no ironing board and no hairdryer in the bedroom; no utensils, cookware and dishwashing liquid in the kitchenette; no shower cap and sanitary pad bag in the bathroom. Upon requesting to the Front Desk, the safe, laundry form and plastic bag and hairdryer were then brought over to my room. Also there’s no waste basket or container in the bedroom and the Suite main door was scratching the floor when it is opened. Then again, I reminded myself that Pontefino Hotel is in Batangas city and not in Makati.

Nevertheless, I had a comfortable and enjoyable 2 night’s stay in the value-for-money and high quality Executive Suite. And I hope the management can continue to improve and upkeep the room amenities.

This hotel surprised me because it is in a provincial area and was appointed like a city hotel. The entrance is very impressive as is the lovely outdoor dining/pool area. The staff are very very helpful and obliging. My room was very clean (but the floor was a bit greasy) and although the aircon was so noisy I ended up switching it off, the bed was comfortable and clean. Buffet breakfast is very limited but probably better than trying to find a local place to eat. If you drink herbal tea, bring your own, they don't have any here.

The walls in the rooms are paper thin and every sound from the room next door is audible. Flushing toilets the whole lot! Breakfast by the pool was very pleasant and it is a nice comfortable hotel for a business traveller.
