Stayed at pangulasian 5 nights and 6 days. We had the island all to ourselves the first 2 days with no other guests. The remaining 4 days, the travel bubble arrived.
The room and the rest of the resort was squeaky clean. Its amazing how they kept sand out of the room and the rest of the facilities when the sand is just a couple steps away. I walked barefoot in the room and felt no dust or sand on my feet. I held the handrails going up the restaurant and felt no dust or sand on my palms. Also, room AC units ( 2 in a room) were very cold, more than capable of cooling the whole room.
The scenery is amazing. So picturesque. And the thick forest sits just a few meters behind the villas. Some of the trees look like a hundred years old. And wildlife is all around. Saw monkeys, crows, tabon scrubfoul, and monitor lizards walking around, not afraid of people. It shows that they're protected here as they are not frightened by the sight of people.
I went snorkeling the first day and the wildlife underwater is just as amazing. I saw a 6 foot blacktip reef shark, an eagle ray, every kind of corral and fish. The next days I saw 4 blacktips and 2 tutrles. The corrals are very alive and the fish are bigger than what I've seen in all other places I've snorkeled at in the philippines. You could tell that they take protecting the reef and its inhabitants seriously here. Proper mooring points so boats don't have to drop anchor, and no fishing in front of the resort which means all the fish are allowed to grow to full size. And they aren't spooked by people. And no garbage and plastic anywhere, they were a rare sight and I saw less than a handful my entire stay.
I've never seen such sustainable tourism in all other resorts I've visited in the philippines. They don't allow you to touch anything. Not even the guides touch anything. And the lights that lit the path to the rooms are LED, thought they were ordinary bulbs but when I touched them they were cool to the touch. Also, it is one of the only places where you can have a real beach wedding. A catholic wedding on sand.
As for the staff, they truly made my stay memorable. Hats off to the staff for always going the extra mile. They always greeted us and were keen on providing anything they could. Special mention to my favorites. Jude, who was always there to serve us food and wait on us. He's the reason I say the staff go the extra mile. We had dinner on the beach one windy night and the sand lanterns couldn't be lit because of the wind. I told him it was fine but he didn't give up and found a way to keep them lit by burying them halfway in the sand. Andy, who knew anything and everything about the islands, who kept me company in all my activities whether it be snorkeling over an hour, or island hopping or trekking to the viewpoint. Sid, who took care of all, and I mean all of the things we needed for our wedding. And all the staff at the front desk. They made sure to watch our 7 month old baby every time they could.
The activities were great. Island hopping is a must. And a lot better now since there were no dozen tourists and kayakers, or hawkers and peddlers. We actually got to explore all the sights with zero people. Just us and Andy.
I also enjoyed using the resorts laser sailboat. It was in superb condition.
My only comment about my entire stay are two things. One, they could have been more creative with the food. There were nights when the food was really good. But they kept on repeating some items in the menu. They could have cooked some items differently. The other is a cockroach in the cabinet. I understand that the resort just a few meters from a wild forest. But my wife was super freaked out by it. I didn't mind too much. But the resort immediately acted on it. And I mean immediately. Within minutes from hearing about it, they sent the island pest control to act on it. And dont worry this wasn't a cockrach you see in the city. It was a jungle cockroach which had different color from a typical one. Another thing I didn't mind was all the lizard poop every morning around the room. I mean, it is a jungle just outside and there are tiny lizards inside the room although you never see them.
Overall, worth every peso. And definitely one of the best resorts I've stayed in. My compliments to Ms. Jen and all her staff on a job well done! Definitely looking forward to visiting again, not just the place, but all the people in it.
