We stayed in the ocean view rooms here for 3 nights. Outside was so hot during the day but we looked perfectly west for the most magnificent sunsets. The room was quite large with 2 cane chairs to sit in. the only issue was the toilet cistern was not attached to the wall well and we had some leakage. We did report the issue to Gary the owner. The steps upstairs are steep especially if you have some luggage to carry up/down.
Actually has the only pool on the island which was super refreshing at the end of the day. Really close to the Bosun's tavern for a drink and meal.
You certainly need to have your own vehicle.
So actually great place to stay!!
We are very pleased with our choice of hotel for our stay on Christmas Island. The room is spacious, clean and well equipped. We had an upstairs room with private balcony offering a first rate view of the sunset each evening. Although we did not use the BBQ area by the pool, it appears to be clean, well equipped and well laid out. The pool is perfect for a cooling dip during the sweltering afternoons and for socialising with other guests.
The location is also perfect for us, being very close to the dive centre (Extra Divers) and next-door to the Golden Bosun pub which serves excellent meals in the evenings.
We hope to be able to return soon.
Great location, overlooking the ocean. Walking distance to dive, surf & fishing shops. Close to the pharmacy and supermarket.
There isn't a restaurant, but on most nights the nearby tavern is open and they have a bar fridge, microwave, toaster and electric kettle in the room.
Our room was serviced daily, except on Sundays and some public holidays.
The only unpleasant experience was halfway through our stay we started to notice a nauseating smell when we stepped out of our room and then blow flys started swarming. Eventually, the smell entered our room. We were told the cause was a dead rat and they couldn't locate it.
Staff were pleasant, the pool and bbq were clean.
The Sunset is a great hotel and offers some amazing views over the ocean and sunsets. The owner is a wonderful host, very friendly and only too happy to be of assistance. Our room size was very generous including the bathroom and large shower area. It was clean and very comfortable. We had one or the back rooms which was good as for the first few days we had a lot of rain, and could still sit outside our room to enjoy the ambience with an evening drink. Yes, we didn't have a room offering the great views over the ocean, however it was a 30 second walk to the front where we could still enjoy the view when it was not raining. The room has a nice sized bar fridge, a toaster for breakfast and tea and coffee facilities. Although not a 5 star establishment, it was 5 stars for us as it was perfect for our requirements, with a lovely host, and a lovely lady who cleaned our room each day. Next door to the hotel is the Golden Bosun Tavern which has amazing food and great views over the ocean. And not too far to walk home after a few drinks. Swimming pool was well maintained and was perfect for the afternoon dip. As far as we are concerned, this is the best accomodation on the island
Just back from 7 nights staying at The Sunset on Christmas Island. Great spot with a excellent pool area to socialise in; clean, comfortable rooms with friendly staff in a great location. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
