Does paradise need an oasis? Apparently it doesn't hurt and the Kawayan Siargao Resort fills the need quite well. A very exclusive oasis, even when "full" it means that only two parties occupy the grounds, consisting of a beautiful garden surrounding a nice pool, with the two villas on either side of the pool. In four nights at the resort my wife and I shared the facilities with other guests the first night, then had the resort to ourselves the next three.
The villa is spacious and airy, with a nice veranda out front with a view of the garden and pool, a great place to relax in the evenings. The bedroom and bath were very clean, and as mentioned many times the bath is unique with an indoors/outdoors design. Maybe this is the only drawback, the bath, being 'outside', is a bit of a maintenance problem - the floors and walls show some significant deterioration. Also, and no way around this, mosquitoes and other critters such as frogs inhabit the bath.
The staff couldn't be more wonderful, always friendly and making every effort to accommodate our every wish - whether it was extra towels, or mosquito coils, or arranging a custom island hop.
The included breakfast was good also, and quite a robust start to the day, whether you decided on the Filipino, English, or Continental options.
Overall, a real Oasis in Paradise!
The resort has great potential to receive a greater rating. However, our experience at Kawayan Siargao Resort did not meet the positive reviews from other guests.
When we arrived at the resort, we were escorted to our villa - the hostess said she was new to the resort so couldn't answer any questions of ours (i.e. Wi-Fi connection).
The resort was very pretty - tropical and private. The room was spacious and the bathroom was cool with a semi-outdoor shower.
After we settled in, we went to the resort restaurant for dinner. Lo and behold, we were told that they would not be able to accommodate dinner because they did not have a chef (!!!). So we ended up finding dinner down the road.
We returned to our room after dinner, and to our surprise, walked into the bathroom, and was greeted by a large RAT! Let's just say, from that point on, we did not get much rest. The staff did catch the rat, but we were afraid of another one coming into the bathroom (through the semi-outdoor shower). Our suggestion to the resort is to somehow secure a way to keep rodents out of the bathroom/room if they want to keep the openness of the semi-outdoor shower ambience.
The Wi-Fi connection did not work most of the time during our stay.
We ended up changing our length of stay to two nights and both nights, we experienced more negative experiences than positive (i.e. rodent, poor Wi-Fi, no dining, power outage).
The staff members were very nice and kind.
It is very unlikely that we'll be returning to this resort in the future.
We picked this resort for the fact that it's walking distance to The Boardwalk as my husband loves to surf. This was our first time in Siargao and it didn't disappoint us. I communicated directly to David , the owner who is French and who has been living with his family in the area. He's very accomodating and assured us that our villa will be available on the days that we've booked. We love the simplicity of the accomodation and of course , the selling point-their outdoor shower! When we arrived, we were greeted by friendly staff. The villa is very lovely! It's very neat and comfortable. Love the verandah area and the lush tropical garden! Dave also owns a restaurant and bar as well as boulangerie or bake shop. We had few drinks at the bar and really enjoyed the music and ambience. At dinner time, we had our sushi as they're having sushi night at Friday. It was amazing! Portioning, pricing and presentation is great! We have been to a lot of Japanese restaurant . We have added Kawayan to one of our the best sushi places we've been. It's good that they are flexible with their menu and there's variety. Bed is very comfortable and love the canopy bed with mosquito net. Not a lot of mosquitoes I should say as we have lathered ourselves with insect repellant. The breakfast is included in the room package. We thought the price is quite reasonable. Breakfast is scrumptious. Big serving for me though so I just ordered my sunny side ups and french bread. Love the fresh coconut juice! We are also coffee lovers. Don't expect a good coffee with your breakfast nor a kettle in your room. Have it at Dave's boulangerie, open at 6am and you'll get fresh brewed espresso coffee. They have few cakes, tart display. We have tried their lemon and apple tart which we enjoyed. We have tried different restaurants in the area and Dave's resto is the best so far. We had our last dinner at Dave's. We really enjoyed our stay here. Love the sound of the birds and crickets as well as fire flies at night. The best night we had is when it rained. The sound of the rain was so relaxing. We're planning to visit here again in October to catch a better wave. Dave's villa is perfect for couples. Highly recommended.
Just got back from spending 5 nights here with 2 mates. Probably a bit more expensive than other places around cloud 9 but well worth it and the rate included breakfast, which is massive! Accommodation was clean and comfortable, there were 3 of us and they were more than happy to add an extra bed. Room was made up daily and really clean.
The owner David is super friendly and helpful, very approachable and was happy to answer all our questions about the area. He's a local surfer and has a lot of knowledge about surrounding breaks, even called me into a wave out Cloud 9 on our first day :) Food at the restaurant is excellent, so good we didn't eat anywhere else! Great bar and lounge area with a great pool table. All the staff were great. Can't fault the place really, my only suggestion would be put a few hammocks in around the place so you can really get into the island lifestyle.
Definitely recommend staying a Kawayan, especially when David opens up his French bakery next door!
Arrived at the resort at around 1pm and the first thing I noticed was the nicely selected chill music at the beautifully designed restobar. The kind receptionist informed us that our room which is about 30-40 meters away is still being cleaned. So we went around the island and went back around 3pm. I describe our unit a house as the size is big. Nicely oriented balcony with hardwood floors. Upon entering the living/bedroom there are two beds - one queen and a single. Flat screen TV and stereo. AC plus two Ceiling fans. Nice cross ventilation as there are lots of windows. The best surprise is the outdoor toilet with the Rain and rain shower.
Had dinner at the restaurant. Looked at the menu and found it at first a little expensive. I ordered the Mahi Mahi. My wife had the Fish in White Wine Sauce while my son had the Fish Curry. When our order arrived I realized that the price was very very reasonable as the food was fabulous considering having it in a tropical island. Ample serving and nicely presented. Felt like I was eating in a 5 Star restaurant in a Manila. Breakfast which was part of the room package was also great. Sandwiches are huge as well. David the Chef and Owner was always there everyday smiling and was very hospitable in the rest of our stay. The female staff are also nice and courteous.
I would recommend Kawayan Siargao Resort to people that want peace, quite, good food and place with a clean rustic feel in an island setting.
