One of the most wonderful places I've ever stayed in.
The anticipation when driving down to the priory for the first time was the most exciting part. It can be seen for miles around and armed with the knowledge that that is where you'll be staying is a wonderful feeling. After finding the enormous front door key, the explore around the building makes one liken themselves to an explorer; what will be behind the next door?
Warm and well-equipped, Woodspring is a true retreat away from the everyday. You are very much isolated from humanity but still within easy reach of shops, pubs and other amenities.
We filled our days by walking along the coast, gambling our coppers on Weston sea front, driving through Cheddar Gorge and on to Wells, climbing up to Glastonbury Tor and bird spotting en route to all of these places (it's a very good place to go birdwatching). Incidentally, the museum part to the Priory is home to a small colony of bats which you can watch at dusk from one of the internal bedroom windows. The place is apparently haunted too. If you are the last one up in the evening, this really comes to the forefront of your mind as every slight noise can be heard as it is so quiet there.
Remember though, as it's a Landmark Trust property, there are no radios, TVs or Wifi.
The only reason I won't be rushing back is that there are lots of other Landmark properties to enjoy.
4 nights here with good friends was magic. A beautiful Landmark Trust property; remote, peaceful, beautifully presented & very, very relaxing from the first moment. Visited this November, weather wet and dull but it was a good excuse to stay by the log fires chatting, reading, painting, learning origami, drinking, eating, playing games (there are some in the sitting room draws), snoozing & laughing a lot. The visitors books make good reading and everyone seems to have enjoyed their visit. We were 5 adults (supposedly) & Sam the dog to keep us in check. Private access to the tiny but atmospheric Priory museum was a real bonus & a visit to Glastonbury to find the inner self (whatever yours may be) was the only excursion. We did not miss TV or WiFi, just come & enjoy family or friends. I took & used a hot water bottle but good heating throughout spacious rooms which just ooze history. Also mysteries to solve (see the visitors book). Cannot praise this place enough.
What a fabulous place. Woodspring Priory is situated in what feels like, the middle of nowhere! It is a beautiful buildling that the Landmark Trust have renovated to a very high standard. The bedrooms were comfortable and the kitchen is an amazing room where we spent most of our time. It is very well equipped and our stay there was truly memorable. We used a fabulous restaurant on the Saturday night where their Chef came in a cooked us a 7 course taster menu with waitress service and a washer upper! What a treat that was. My only word of warning is be careful of the spiral staircase - it's a work of art in itself!
