Christiana and Cesare gave my wife and myself a friendly welcome after our tiring but lovely car journey from Cortona, prolonged by the unreliable behaviour of our SatNav, anxious to take us to Poggioni rather than S. Leo Bastia from where the property is easily findable via a turn off in the village opposite the bar. Maybe half a mile on made- up road, then straight on at a confirmatory sign on the rougher track for maybe a mile when property is signposted on the right. English is spoken and everything was explained. Our four nights were spent in a small, well appointed room next to the lovely pool, and with beautiful views over the rolling Umbrian and Tuscan hills. Breakfast - we made our own - was taken in a communal day room with kitchen off where coffee could be brewed and the wherewithall retrieved from the 'fridge. Lunch or the evening meal was similarly arranged - no hardship in Italy where the finocchiona, the olives, the cheese, the peaches and the bread are so delicious.A lovely flowered terrace separates the day room from the pool. This is a lovely place in which to spend a few days or longer away from it all. Our hosts were most accommodating and friendly. Citta di Castello however, about half an hour away, proved enticing for its art, its churches and museums, (and one lovely meal!) although we drew a blank with the Municipal Library - (signposted but not there!). On a clear day, don't fail to visit Monte Santa Maria Tiberina. Ca' de Carlicchi is a wonderful centre in Umbria - just, a stay which my wife and I would love to repeat.
I searched for a long time before finding this wonderful place on the internet. It’s a bargain, on the edge of Tuscany, hidden away in a valley 30 mins away from Cortona but with lovely views. Host Christiana, (German) is married to musician Cesare (Italian) and the place feels like a well-run small hotel even though it is self-catering. The pool is kept immaculately clean, garden watered. The local bar (friendly owner also a musician) is a 15 min walk along the small road lit by fireflies. Cesare will happily share his Instruments and recording studio, if you want to disturb the sound of silence, crickets and birds (very very rarely a car). Come alone or in a group. Christianna has a large light airy yoga studio and therapies are offered on-site. The casa is perfect for a dip in the pool after visiting Tuscan or Umbrian towns or villages. As with most of hilly Tuscany and Umbrian, places can only be reached by driving roads with many bends. I took a flight to Perugia and easily drove here, stopping at Assisi on my return. From the Casa I walked 4 hour in the hills, finding breath taking views but not meeting a soul.
We had a fabulous time at this very nice location. The accomodation was very clean, spacious and the owners of the place incredibly friendly, giving great advice on beautiful villages to visit nearby.
If you want to discover Tuscany (and very close Umbria) besides the mass-touristic cities, this is definitely a very good place to start.
It does have a pool, a terrace and you can see that the owners put a lot of effort into everything: from beautiful flowers and herbs in the garden to a very cozily decorated lounge-area.
The only thing to take into consideration is that this is place is very remote, so you definitely need a car to get around. But you can easily spend a couple of days here discovering the area, especially the good food and wine without getting bored.
Also very good value for money.
Thanks very much for making this a very pleasant stay.
