This quaint hotel is right outside the city walls of medieval historic town of Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber. the hotel feels like a B&B. Our room was on the 3rd floor what they call a 2 room. We had a beautiful view from our room. They have a mini bar of sorts on the second floor and its all done on the honor system, something I had never seen before. Breakfast is provided for guest and offers a decent variety of options. This is where I discovered cold cuts and cheese is a very normal breakfast food, which I encountered on the rest of my trip.
While there are lots of hotels in Rothenburg we were looking for one outside the old town walls to minimise the hassle of driving and parking in such constricted spaces. Hotel-Garni Hornburg fitted the bill perfectly and we were delighted we chose it.
It's a small hotel with just 10 rooms but each is individually decorated and as far from a chain hotel you could not get. It's an old building and it clearly hasn't changed much over they years (and I mean that in a good way!). There is no elevator but you really don't need one in this hotel.
Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean, overlooking the nearby town walls. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, glad to speak English to make up for my questionable German.
Breakfast was included and was perfectly adequate. It sound's corny but if you order a boiled egg it comes with a face drawn on it!! There is no restaurant but snacks, coffee etc. are available at all times on the first floor.
Parking is available in the adjoining public space. It's a very reasonable €5.50 a day but it can be difficult to get a space at busy times and bit of waiting is required. It's usually fine once the day-trippers leave in the evening time.
We remember this hotel fondly and will definitely use it again when we are in this beautiful area.
My husband and I and our twenty-something daughters stayed in this lovely hotel when we visited Rothenburg. I have been to this city before and stayed within the walls - can't say enough that I much preferred staying outside the wall. This hotel is extremely close to the main entrance, and the parking is easy (one big benefit - none of the stress of finding parking and driving the narrow roads within the wall). We had a third floor suite - with two seperate bedrooms and a large shared bathroom between us. It was perfect for us - also very clean, pretty and comfortable. The breakfast was very good, as was the staff. I highly recommend this beautiful Hotel! One sidenote - if you arrive late, food within the wall is hard to come by. We did find one restaurant open at 8:30 pm....but we were getting nervous! Try to arrive early and do the night watchman tour!
During our 4-night stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, my adult daughter and I were pleased beyond our expectation with Hotel Hornburg. Although our lodging was advertised as a room, it was actually a suite with entry, large sitting room with desk, chairs and sofa, a bright and clean bedroom, and a sparkling clean bathroom. Because we visited during a very hot summer, we appreciated the availability of fans in both the bedroom and sitting room. For cooler month visitors, the towel warmer in the bathroom awaits.
With our comings and goings, we had the chance to peak into other rooms -- each uniquely decorated -- giving the impression that each room had something special to offer whomever stayed in it.
The ground floor lobby and adjacent breakfast room were spacious and clean, and the first floor sitting area included a small library, computer for guests' use, an espresso bar, and a glass-front cooler with water, beer, wine, and juice. The breakfast offering was absolutely the best we've experienced in our travels through Europe. Fresh bread and brotchen, cereals, a choice of juices, an array of cheeses and sliced meats, yogurt, and a 5-star fruit bowl. Soft-boiled eggs, coffee, tea, and cappuccino were made to order. The hotel garden offered various sitting area, some with tables, others with chaise lounges, Bushes and trees offered some privacy from other sitting areas.
From our bedroom window, we had a terrific view of the great wall surrounding the old town, and the hotel's location meant a walk of only minutes to reach the wall and gates into the town.
I cannot imagine a better choice of lodging in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. I rank Hotel Hornburg very highly in terms of value for cost.
Nice hotel right on the entrance of the village, good breakfast too.
It has a public parking right in front of the hotel. We loved the room except the door of the bathroom, that is no a proper door but a crystal so you have no privacy...but in general, we loved the hotel and we would recommend it
