Our room was spacious, impeccably clean with comfy beds and a breathtaking view from the balcony. Villa St. Maxime offered beautiful spaces for quiet leisure, a cooked-to-order breakfast of many delicious choices and a happy hour that provided opportunity to connect with other guests. Ann and John cordially welcomed us and remained attentive to our comfort throughout our stay. Their wealth of knowledge of the area was extremely helpful to us. The surrounding natural beauty, the charm of the nearby villages and the magic of the Villa, all added up to a week of enchanting perfection!!!
VStM is a very small bed & breakfast owned by an expat American and her French husband. It is perfectly located on a hill just about a 5 minute walk west of St. Paul de Vence with lovely views of the village and with pretty views of the Mediterranean and Cap Antibes in the distance straight ahead. We liked it, and Ann (owner) is extremely pleasant and helpful. It has some design quirks but overall is a very good choice.
"+" is a positive; "--" is a negative
++ perfect; 5 minute walk to St. Paul de Vence; 40 minute drive to Nice. We drove to the Nice airport from here the day of our departure flight. 15 min drive up to Vence.
+ quiet; surrounded by shrubbery so no street noise
+ excellent views of SPdV, especially when lit up at night
+ parking in the back; very tight
+ spacious open areas; this is a home that has been turned into a B&B
+ entrance is in the back off the parking lot; door is open all day and locked at night; you will have a key
+ breakfast is on the patio overlooking the pool for lovely views.
-- breakfast is rather spare in choices, including only one mini baguette for each table regardless of the number of people. If you ask for a second mini baguette for additional people, you will not be granted any more than the first one.
-- we read reviews about a "happy hour" but since this is a very small B&B, it's more a very small number of people sharing a glass of wine than an evening pre dinner reception, which is fine.
+ defintely splurge for the large suite with the double sized balcony - StPdV has no nightlife at all so we found that sitting on the balcony with some champagne and admiring the amazing views was a wonderful nightlife alone.
+ / - decent storage in armoire and closet, although armoire is dusty
-- sheets are old and tired; bed is a bit too old and soft
-- no luggage racks; only space for suitcases is in the bathroom and the living room on the floor
++ great living room area with bright light and sliding glass doors onto balcony for great view
+ very very large; larger than the bedroom. Two sinks
-- toilet cubicle has no door
-- jacuzzi tub is a bit worse for wear looking so we did not use
-------- BIG NEGATIVE -- the shower is incredibly quirky in design. It is large and yet there is no showerhead. There are weak shower jets that come out from various sides of the walls so it's like being sprayed with a sprinkler not a shower head. It is incredbily difficult to take a shower and to wash your hair and feel clean. Water sprays everywhere except on you.
-- lighting is very dim
Our favorite part of this hotel was the full length sliding glass doors across the entire back of our suite showing the amazing views of the grounds the pool and the French Riveria. It was a perfect base for our trip to the see all the French Riveria has to offer. Our hotel room was very private, and with only a few hotel rooms on the property it was very quiet and intimate.
Having the option to go to the common areas and join others for breakfast (best eggs I have every had) or happy hour in the evening made the stay even more enjoyable. One happy hour my husband was invited to cut off the top of a champagne bottle with a sabre (after a full training by John, our host) and then champagne for all. Unforgettable. See attached pics.
The closest restuarant (walking distance) was so good we went 3 of the nights we were there. The risotto, pizza and creme bulee were so amazing we couldn't resist.
We were able to walk to the village of St Paule de Vence and with the Villa St Maxime as our base, we were able to see Nice, Cannes, Vance, Monte Carlo, Antibes and more. The train and Uber worked great for every where we wanted to go.
After a noisy stay in Nice, we wanted calm and charm in Saint Paul de Vence,
we selected Villa Saint Maxime because we finally thought we were calm,
we were welcomed but we like to have peace,
the owners like to talk, it's probably nice for those who like it but we just wanted to relax and be calm,
we fear at each visit to the reception to meet the owners and have to discuss for too long,
We had booked a room thinking of being in a hotel but it is rather a bed and breakfast with charming owners but a little too intrusive
We had a friend's birthday in Saint Paul,
they chose us this hotel,
but this is not a hotel but bed and breakfast,
We like to be discreet but the owners very warm and even too warm tried to let us know other guests and we did not like at all! we like to be alone,
the room was a good size but we did not like the decor,
we should have been wary because indeed there are many photos erased on the site TripAdvisor!
if you wish to have peace during your stay, we do not recommend this property
