We went to Queen Camel to spend a day taking photos of the St Barnabas Church hoping to find grave sites of several of my ancestors who have a long history in the village going back to at least the early 1500s. We stayed at the Mildmay Arms, our room overlooked Church lane and I could see the church when I looked out our bedroom window.
The owners were great hosts and made sure we were well looked after.
The meals were excellent. We had a lunch and a breakfast in the hotel and they were without a doubt the best value for money meals I have had in a long history of travelling. The full English breakfast was plentiful and cooked to perfection. Bacon, sausage, mushrooms, baked beans, fried tomato, toast, and 2 of the best tasting fried eggs I can ever remember eating.
The bar had a great atmosphere with several locals drinking there on the night we stayed, and the Guinness on tap was excellent.
Overall a great experience and although unlikely I will be in QC again, if I am I will certainly staying at the Mildmay Arms.

We stayed over for a night, a meal and a few drinks. Beautiful old inn, independently owned, plucked straight from the 1640's with such a friendly atmosphere. The drinking area is cosy with a sofa and armchairs and serves a good selection of ciders and well kept real ales among other drinks. The food was home cooked and well above the regular pub lunch level whilst still being reasonably priced. Our room was spotless and the staff went out of their way to be helpful. A real gem right in the middle of the West Country.

Smashing little pub B&B, really handy for visiting the Haynes Motor Museum.

My room was all freshly decorated and modern with a great shower.

A super full-English set me up for the day and the pub does food in the evening that takes care of your supper.

Nice pint too.

We had eaten here before Christmas and as it was so good had booked B&B for valentines weekend.
This is where it all started to go downhill .
After a 3 hr journey from Sussex they were expecting us but when we arrived at 7.30 there was no parking ANY WHERE and they have TWO car parks ! I waited to catch the attention of a waitress who suggested on street parking and a barman who said 'Try the school or round the corner...' Nothing to be found so she said "Well we're really busy with a 90th birthday so try coming back in an hour !'' This was now 7.55....
Will there still be food ? I asked
YES she said .
We returned at 9.00 , checked in only to be told ' By the way the kitchens now closed '!
Starving and not local there was nowhere else that we knew of to go to eat so it was crisps for valentines !

The room was pleasant , bed comfortable and shower hot.
The breakfast was tasty.
All good there .

After breakfast we spoke to the barman from the previous night of our grievances only to we find that he wasn't local either and was only standing in for the owner who was on holiday and he himself lived in Spain !
We told him that we saw that there were parking spaces under our bedroom window to which he replied ' oh so you'll know where to park next time' !

We had booked online and had paid a reduced rate but on paying the bill I found I had paid the standard rate....
There won't be a next time !

Maybe if the owner was there this wouldn't have happened but it did !

We left unhappy and it was totally unnecessary !

A farce from start to finish sadly.

Oh ! and I've only waited until now to write my review as I was too angry before !

Lots of positives: friendly and attentive staff, very helpful owner. Bedroom 1 is recently refurbished with a decent sized tv and excellent en-suite bathroom. Nice view too.

Dinner was OK - to be fair my husband enjoyed his (I was less enthusiastic). First suggestion would be to deliver a menu containing fewer items. Breakfast again OK and tasted fine but best to ask guests what they'd like in a cooked breakfast, hot water for tea and some decent bread would improve further as would jugs of juice and cereals dispensed from containers.

But to really enjoy return business and longer stays improve the quality of sheets, mattress and pillows as a priority.
