We went there for the weekend to relax and dive as a couple. The place is right on the sea boarder (but no beach) and diving was excellent with really serious and competent dive master(s). The food was included in the room (you get to there by boat) and for that kind of fare in the Philippines, the food was really good. The dessert was nothing to write about, but compensated by an excellent breakfast. Would go back with older kids when the sea is more quiet and the snorkling will be fabulous!

I have been going back to this resort 2017-2019, and have been recommending to friends because of the nice room with a view of the beach, really good food and the house reef. Owners are super friendly too.

Everything changed when we visited Jun 2023. We were with friends, snorkling in their house reef as usual, but somehow the waves changed, and became strong. Note that there was no sign that we can't snorkel that day. We had a hard time going back and climbing the entry/exit point of snorkling because of the waves. Though we asked for help, the staff didnt do anything and just watched us and shouted at us where we should go without realizing it's impossible for us to go to the direction they were pointing as because of the waves. Good thing one of my friends was a free diver, and had her fins with her, she helped me get back to the exit point and I was able to climb back. My friend had to go back though unsafe because the staff isn't doing anything to help my husband get back to the shore. We survived but had bruises, still no assistance from the resort staff.

Not sure if its because the owners werent there back then (they were on vacation diving somewhere that time) that the staff didn't mind us and didn't check on us, but this incident changed our perspective of this resort.

If you are a swimmer/diver who can handle uncontrolled waves on your own, then I can recommend staying here. But for non-swimmers, exercise caution.

My husband and I wanted to try the intro to scuba in batangas since thats the nearest to manila and based on the reviews here decided to of course choose Portulano. And they did not dissappoint at all. The owners, Carmela and Arnel are both very accomodating. The staff are friendly. The view from our room are spectacular. The room is clean and theirs beds are comfortable. The food they served were delicious and tasty. No complaints at all.

Regarding the intro to scuba, Arnel was very patient and calm while teaching us the basics. My husband and I are very pleased on how well the dive went. Eventhough I ditched them early (Sorry guys! LOL).

We will definitely come back and recommend the resort to friends. Next time ulet!

An isolated diving resort, 2hrs from Manila by car & requires access by boat. Easily organised by the resort. The accommodation itself has basic amenities, but very clean & well looked after. They are environmentally conscious which is a big plus. The beds are comfortable and water views are breathtaking from every room. I'm not a diver, but free dived & snorkelled with the best of them. With the ocean at their front door, a few steps into the water would reveal such an amazing & colourful display of corals & fish and the visibility was great. Excellent chillout resort with equipment for a rainy day ie. pool table, movie's, books, games etc. Food was buffet style & plentiful with some local dishes as well as general. The staff were fantastic, very helpful & friendly. Would definitely like to visit again.

My sister, cousins and friends visited Portulano over Christmas last year (sorry for the delayed review), and we loved it. It was quiet, just us and one other family doing their open water course.

We were in 2 rooms, and both were facing the sea. And when I say facing the sea, that means one entire side of the rectangular room opens up towards the open sea via folding doors. We slept like babies with the sound of the sea lulling us to sleep each night. Didn't need air conditioning either (but it was available) - the sea breeze was gentle but nearly constant. Furnishing was simple but adequate.

The diving was amazing, particularly the night dives. Anilao is famous for its macro/muck diving, but what people don't tell you is that the some of the 'macro' stuff there is huge - 50cm decorator crab, 30 cm nudibranches and more. We would come out of the water literally buzzing, yelling at each other excitedly about what we saw - flamboyant cuttlefish, electric clam, giant trevally and more. Dives mostly went down to about 28m then gradually move up to 5m or so. No boring safety stops because we had plenty to see and explore at 5m. Portulano's house reef was also fantastic - it's a little bit off the main Anilao stretch, but even better because it's less dived and quieter.

Our Divemaster Choy (also resident boatman and electrician/technician) had amazing eyes for spotting things, down to a nudibranch barely 2mm in size, and 4 separate baby frogfishes in one night dive. He was also flexible and tailored our dive schedules to our every whim. Since our group was relatively light on air consumption, most of our dives lasted 60-75 minutes and Choy was great about letting us have good long dives, while checking to be sure we didn't go too low on air.

Food was simple, but pretty good. Breakfast was pretty much the same thing everyday, but you could make requests for any special orders. The waffles were good!

We skipped the Christmas eve night dive and Christmas morning dive so the staff would have the opportunity to go back home to their families in the village (10 minutes boat ride away), but food was still provided and the staff were enthusiastic about helping us throughout our time there (including buying batteries from the village during their grocery runs).

We are heading to Similan for Christmas 2014, but are considering visiting Portulano again in 2015!
